Introduction: the loneliness of Jesus on the cross

• Alone - the safest word in the English language
• David's loneliness in Psalm 55
• The perfect world at creation: 'it is not good that man should be alone...'

1. The solution for loneliness in marriage?

• marriage, house, children, career....
• Australia has one of the highest divorce rates in the world

2. The solution for loneliness in friendships?

3. Selfishness leading to loneliness

• When a relationship breaks up there is sin involved somewhere
• Two sinners have twice as much sin to deal with in a relationship as being alone... So sin needs to be dealt with.
• How do you solve the problem of sin and selfishness?
  • Need to turn to Jesus on the cross
  • God had deserted Jesus - there is no loneliness which compares to the abandonment by God
  • Trust in Jesus - cannot deal with sin without forgiveness

4. Love

• Being unselfish eases the pain of loneliness
• Find your ultimate companionship in God Himself, through Jesus Christ
