Jesus Is Sentenced
Series Trials and Death of Son of Man
Theme: The epitome of injustice is found in the condemning of the innocent Son of God to death; yet God is working for our good and His glory.
In vv. 13-16, Pilate renders the verdict; Jesus is innocent. Then the crowd renders its judgment; they want Jesus crucified, and Pilate acquiesces to the crowds' demands in vv. 17-25.
As we consider this passage, there are several reflections.
- Consider your allegiance to Christ (The crowd so easily has changed on Jesus). Are you a true follower of Christ?
- Consider the great exchange: Jesus, the Son of God for Barabbas, the son of the father.
- Consider your freedom in Christ.
In conclusion, we see the horrible injustice. Jesus was not guilty, yet He was condemned. This was the height of injustice, but God worked this for His glory and our good. The great exchange is ours: our sin for His righteousness. His glory is seen in that no other could show such incredible love!
