Matthew chapter eight, and we're gonna begin there in verse one, stand with me if you would as we read the word of God, out of just reverence of his word this morning, and then we'll quickly be seated. In Matthew chapter eight, I've entitled this message, There Came a Leper, There Came a Leper. As what the song just sang a little while ago, this leper came, he brought all that he had. brought the vileness, brought everything that he had with him, and he brought it to the Lord. And I encourage us all today, whatever it is that we have, that we do the exact same thing. Let's take a look at it. The Bible says in verse one, when he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And behold, there came a leper and worshiped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand and touched him, saying, I will, be thou clean. Immediately his leprosy was cleansed, and Jesus saith unto him, see thou tell no man, but go thy way, and show thyself to the priest. and offer the gift that Moses commanded for a testimony unto them. Let's pray. Father, we come to you today. We do thank you so much, Lord, for your goodness. As we sing about this morning, we thank you for your grace, love, longsuffering, all these things that are great gifts, God, that you have given us today. Lord, I pray that you'd help us to take advantage of these precious things. Lord, I pray, God, that you'd speak to our hearts this morning, and Lord, whatever it is that we need to hear from heaven, Lord, I pray that you would open up our eyes and ears to it. God, I pray that there's anybody here today that's not saved, as they come under the sound hearing of your word, that today they would call out to you for salvation. and their life would be eternally changed. Lord, we pray for your blessings this morning. Ask God you'd build a hedge of protection about our church and about us today, and all this we pray in Jesus' name, amen, amen. You may be seated. As we have read here in our text, we see that a leper has come into town. The Bible shows us there in verse one, the Bible says when he was come down from the mountain that great multitudes followed him. And I want us to also see, and this isn't my message this morning, but the Bible does say that there was great multitudes that were following, but I only see one that's really worshiping. In other words, there can be a lot of people that just kind of follow the Lord, but not everybody. really worships the Lord, and we can see that throughout the Scriptures, I believe, as well. People that were following Christ for the wrong reasons, for their own purposeful, selfish gains, or just because of curiosity, or whatever it could be, but there's a difference in following the Lord and being a disciple of Christ, and we see here this man, he was coming to be a worshiper. He wasn't just somebody that was just gonna follow the Lord around just to follow around, but he was somebody that really had the idea in his heart and his life that he wanted to worship God. This was a man that was surrendered to the Lord. The Bible shows us here. in this text there in verse two, when we think about the very first truth, is I want us to notice, the Bible says, and there came a leper and worshiped him. We see that this man, he came with the very first truth, is he came with heaviness. He came with heaviness in his life. He had, of course, just like us today, we have sins that are heavy in our life, burdens that we are bearing. We see that this man was a leper. And in the Bible, we can see that sin Sin and leprosy have a lot of similar characteristics, such as leprosy is one of those things that kinda starts from the inside, it is rooted very deep, and you don't know it's even quite there until the next thing you know, it begins to make its way out into our skin and into our hands or into our feet, and we have no idea that it's really taking place, that it's even there until it comes out. And then it comes out just a little bit at a time, someone had called it at one time, It was death inch by inch. Something that just kinda slowly deteriorated at the body. And next thing you know, you would have ulcers, in essence, and blisters that would come up on the body, and leprosy was one of those things that deteriorated the body to such a degree that it, in essence, really ate the person alive, and their fingers would begin to fall off, and their toes would fall off, and their hands and their feet would fall off, and their face would be all disfigured. It was something that literally ate the people alive, a slow death per se. And so listen, as we think about that as sin as well, listen, all of us today, we are coming to the Lord Jesus Christ. Listen, you may be lost here today, or there may be something in your life that is a burden, something that is heavy, whatever it could be, something that the devil has just laid hold on you about. And I'm thankful today that listen, no matter what it is, that we have a God in heaven, a Jesus that we can bow to, a God in heaven, the Lord Jesus that we can come to and worship and come to him exactly as we are with whatever it is that we have in our life. Listen, the Lord Jesus didn't shine away this leper. When this leper came up, listen, it was somebody that nobody else wanted anything to do with, but we see that Christ wanted everything he could to do with this man. I'm thankful that the sinness and the vileness in my life was not so bad that the Lord Jesus said, I'm sorry, but I cannot help you. I'm sorry, but I don't want nothing to do with you. I'm sorry, and just kind of pushed you away. No, I'm thankful today. that when I came to the Lord with everything that I have, regardless of what it was, regardless of how vile it was and of how wicked it was and how nasty it was, as sin it is, we see that Christ was willing to accept this man exactly as he came, but there was one thing he was willing to do. to convince him and him to walk completely different. And I think that right there is the Christian life. We allow God to move in our life, we allow God to touch our life, we come as we are, but we walk away a changed people. And one of the first things we see here this morning is I want us to see there in that very first truth is that he came with something heavy. The Bible says, behold, there came. There came a leper. One of the things that leprosy would have caused a person to do is they couldn't be on the in crowd of people. They had to stand far away. So it isolated fellowship. And that's exactly what sin does. Listen, but when I was a sinner, I was away from God. I wanted nothing to do with God. My sin kept me far from the Lord. I stood afar off. And that's exactly what leprosy does. We also see that it was vile and it was contaminating. One of the reasons why that they told the lepers to stay away because it was something that could contaminate the whole village or the people that was around them. And listen, sin can be the exact same thing. What happens is when our vileness is around, It can be around other people. It begins to infect those as well. And so we can see that the Bible shows us these similarities between sin and leprosy that we come heavy, but he also came with a lot of burdens. He came up with a lot of things in his heart. The Bible also shows us in the scriptures that we can see that he was also not only coming heavy, but he was also coming humbly. Even though this man was supposed to, by law, stay far away, a hundred paces from everybody, and as he approached everybody, he had to say, leper, leper, leper, and let everybody know that which he was guilty of, in essence, that which he had in his life. And so it was, in essence, a public humiliation. But he stood afar off. He had something that was vile and contaminating in his life and something that starts small and you never notice that it's there until it begins to bear fruit and grow out of your life. The Bible shows us. In our text, that he was a man that came with a lot of heaviness. He came with a lot of heaviness in his life. I'm thankful, as I said already though, that I'm glad that no matter what it is that I come to God heavy about, no matter what burden that it is that I care, no matter how vile it may be, no matter how wicked that it may be, no matter how low it may be, and how disgusting that it may be to God, that whatever it is that there is, as the Bible says, there is no sin that where sin abounds, grace much more abounds. And I'm telling you this morning, there's no sin that can stain the soul so bad that the blood of Jesus can't wash away. And so you come to Christ with everything that you got. as they just played and sang this morning. You just come to Jesus with all that you got, whatever burdens that you have, regardless of what it may seem like, regardless of what it looks like, you just bring it all to him, and Jesus will not push you away. Does not the Bible say, Jesus said himself, all that come to me, I will in no wise cast out. You know what that means? That means you can bring it all to him. What did the Bible say? He says, cast all you care upon him, for he careth for you. So whatever it is that you got this morning, whatever burden that you carry, whatever sin that it may be, just understand that regardless of its vileness and regardless of its wickedness, don't you let that keep you from Christ because the Lord Jesus today can change your life, bring it all to him. In all that come to me, I will in no way cast out. Don't you listen to the things of the devil? When the devil says this and God wouldn't want you, the Lord wouldn't want you, listen, you'd be an embarrassment to him. No, listen, you bring it to Christ and you let God work in your life and you let the Lord Jesus change you this morning and he will change you inside and outside. The Bible shows us here in our text that he was a man that came. The Bible says in verse two, behold, there came a leper. This man came with heaviness. He had many sins and he had many burdens in his life. There was many things that was laid upon him, but he was also a man that came with humbleness. Not only did he come with heaviness, but he come with humbleness. Notice the Bible says, behold, there came a leper and worshiped him, saying, Lord, He said, if thou wilt, thou can make me clean. What I appreciate about that is we see that this man came with a humble heart. He also, he came with boldness, and he came there, when he came there to the Lord, and he began to worship the Lord, he came with a humble heart, just saying, in essence, God, if thou wilt, he called him Lord, and said, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. He didn't demand that God do it, but he was asking. He didn't say, well, listen, if you don't give me then I'm not gonna worship you. Listen, we gotta be careful in our life that we don't get ourselves to a place where we say, God, if you don't do this for me, then I don't have nothing else to do with you. God, if you don't do this for me, then I'm not gonna worship you. Let us be careful. that we don't come to that place. Listen, this man, he says, if thou will, thou can make me clean. This man had a humble heart. He was surrendering himself to the authority and the will of God. As the Bible says, not my will, but thy will be done. Let us make sure that we are praying in his will. God, what is it that you desire from me? And if my will and your will line up, then Lord, I'm ready this morning to receive that blessing. However, where is our heart on that issue? He came with a humble heart. He came with a humble heart. The Bible says, shows us He in essence came with a lot of heaviness. His face, I imagine, disfigured, his body disfigured. As he walked around, people probably looked at him and thought all kinds of grotesque things about him and didn't want him around. As they looked and saw how this leprosy had, in essence, began to deteriorate his body and they wanted nothing else to do with him. Nobody wanted to touch him. It was forbidden to do so. Nobody wanted him around. But then we see that he came and began to worship the Lord. The Bible says, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him. He didn't just come with heaviness, but he came with a humble heart. He worshipped the Lord and calling him Lord, got down and worshipped him. There came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord. Listen, we gotta ask ourselves, am I still gonna call Lord my Lord, even if he doesn't do what I ask? are we still gonna call him Lord? Even if he doesn't do what I ask, listen, how many of you know that God knows better than we? Praise the Lord for that. God knows better than us. And so what we see in this text is we see a man that comes with heaviness, but we also see a man that comes with humbleness. He was willing to worship God, calling him Lord. If thou wilt, thou can make me clean. Are we still willing to worship God? Are we still willing to serve God? Even if things aren't the way we want them to be in life. This man was willing to surrender himself. I've told you many times before, but for sake of illustration, there was a time when my wife and I, and we couldn't have kids, and I finally got to this place where I said, Lord, if this isn't what you want, if kids isn't what you want us to have, then Lord, help me to be able to accept that. but no matter what, I'm still gonna serve you. Bring us to a place. Sometimes we just need to come to a place where we say, you know what, Lord, if this isn't your will for my life, then help me to accept it. What are we willing to do? The Bible says there in verse two, behold, there came a leper and worshiped him. We see that he came with heaviness in his life. There was a lot of baggage that came with him. But we also see that he came with humbleness. He still worshiped the Lord and calling him Lord and saying, if thou wilt. Notice, he understood that Christ had the power to do so. He didn't go to anybody else for it, but he came to Christ because he knew that Jesus is the one that had the power to change his life. Listen, you don't need to seek nobody else to change. Listen, there is no self-help book. There is no other person in this entire world or universe that can help you and transform your life like the Lord Jesus Christ can. And so we can see right here that he came to the one that could change him. He came to the one that had power over all things. He came to the one that even though there was nothing that nobody else could do about it, something that was incurable, he came to the Lord Jesus who could cleanse him of his leprosy. The one that can do something about the situation he was in. He says, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. You see that faith that he has there in that text. Lord, if thou will, you can do it. Lord, if you will, thou canst make me clean. It is within thy power. It is not beyond your reach. There is not a boundary line that is here that you cannot cross. You are not hindered by anything in life, but God, you can do whatever you desire to do that God that we serve can do the impossible, the Bible tells us. And so here we see, there in verse two, we see the humbleness of this man. Even though he came with a lot of heaviness, he still came humbly. Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. You can only imagine the people that were standing around him in awe as they watched this man, the people that were standing around as this leper came up, and he began to worship the Lord, and the Bible says a multitudes were following the Lord, so nobody wanted to be around this leper, but then this leper comes in, and he gets down there close to Christ, and he begins to worship the Lord, and as he's worshiping the Lord, you can only imagine all the other people standing around watching the event unfold. wondering what the Lord's gonna do. Is he gonna cast him out? Is he gonna cast him away? No, he did not. Not only do we see a man that came with heaviness and we see a man that came with humbleness, well, we also see there in verse two a man that came with hope. The Bible says we came, the Bible shows us here that he says, Lord, if thou will, thou canst make me clean. I tell you what, hope can really help us out in our life. Understanding that we can hope in God and trust in God and believe in God and put in our faith and knowin' that God can do these things which we ask. Knowin' that we have a God that can do the impossible. He came to the Lord hopin', he came to the Lord trustin', he came to the Lord knowin', he came to the Lord puttin' his faith in the Lord Jesus whom he knew without a shadow of a doubt that can do the things that he asked. He had hope. And I'm thankful that even us as Christians here this morning, that whenever we come before God, and listen, sometimes we come before God, we come before God with a heaviness. Y'all hot in here this morning? It is roasting in this place. I'm gonna have to take this off or I'm gonna be a puddle on the floor here in a minute. All right. We see this man with all of his heaviness, with everything that he's got. nasty, ugly, foul, deteriorating fleshly in front of everybody. You can only imagine the horrid scene that it is from his head down to his toes. And he comes there in front of everybody and everybody's perhaps probably gathered around because nobody wants to be within 100 paces of this guy. but I'm thankful the Lord Jesus is willing to be right there in the middle of it. Everybody else wants to be away from the guy, nobody else wants to touch him, nobody wants to be around him, nobody else wants the breath of this man to even get a hold of them, but the Lord Jesus is right there, right there in the middle of it, because all that come to me, I will in no wise cast out. Whatever you got this morning, sin or whatever, burdens, whatever, you bring it to Christ. You bring it to Christ. in heaven hope, in faith, in trust, first and foremost, in his will, amen, in his will for our life, because God always knows what's best for us, amen. He always knows what's best for us. There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the ends thereof are the ways of death. Acknowledge him in all thy ways, and he shall direct thy paths, and so the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. And so we trust in the Lord and the path he desires us to take in life. And so, we see, we bring it all to him. Everything that we got, regardless of how ugly it is or how vile it could be. Oh, Lord. Ah! Here we go, the Bible says, and behold, there came a leper and worshiped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, make me clean. So we see the heaviness that he came with, we also see the humbleness that he came with, but we also see the hope that he came with. He knew that Christ could do something about where he was at. He knew that Christ could cleanse him. Just as we know today, that regardless of what kind of sinner we are, we're all sinners, but regardless of what we're guilty of in our life, that we can come before him and he can cleanse every stain. Did not the Lord Jesus let us know that he can wash us white as snow? He didn't say, well, I can wash you white as snow except for this. He didn't say, well, I can forgive you and cleanse you except for this. No, it was, I can wash you clean. I can wash you white as snow. I can forgive every sin you've ever committed. The Bible shows us right here that he came with a hope. He came with a hope. saying, Lord, if thou will, thou canst make me clean. What was Jesus' response? We've seen that he came heavy, we've seen that he came humbly, and we've seen that he came with hope, so what is the Lord gonna do? There in verse three, the Bible says in Jesus, put forth his hand. I tell you what, you can preach a lot just on that right there. And Jesus put forth his hand and touched him. You can only imagine. I mean, listen, as I said, you had to stay away from these people. Nobody wanted to be around them. It was a death sentence. And Jesus reaches out and touches the guy. Does what nobody else would do. does what nobody else dares to do. Everybody's looking around, probably thinking, amazed, and just, what in the world? I cannot believe he's touching this leper. Has he lost his mind? Man, he is crazy. Why would you do such a thing? That is a death sentence for anybody. There's the Lord Jesus. The one that everybody rejected. The one that's filled. With sin, yes, like we all are, but the one whose body is deteriorating from leprosy, which is what sin does to us in our life. And Jesus reached out his hand and touched him. Touched him. Some people may be sitting here this morning and say, you know, I just, I feel like I need a touch of the Lord in my life. In this area over here, I need a touch of God in my life. In this right here, I need the touch of the Lord in my life. I feel like I got this, I feel like I got that. I need the hand of God to be upon me, Lord. Whatever it is, I will for me, Lord. I know you can. Surrender yourself to Christ. You see, the Lord Jesus reached out and touched him. So we can see Jesus' response was, the man came with heaviness, the man came humbly, the man came with hope, and then Jesus, verse three, he handled the man. Aren't you glad that Jesus can handle our situations? Regardless. of what it is, we have a God in heaven that can handle the situation. Regardless of our vow, regardless of how we could, regardless of it all, there is a God in heaven, the son of God himself, standing right there in the midst, touching a man, handling a man that nobody would have anything to do with. And there Jesus was, handling this man's problem. Handling this man's issue in his life. He's a present help in time of trouble. Praise God for that. And Christ moves in to handle what was handling him. The Bible shows us here in our text, and Jesus put forth his hand. And listen, there may be some people here today that are just saying, you know what, Lord, I'm coming with a heaviness. Lord, I come with a lot of heaviness. I come with a lot of burdens in my heart this morning. I'm coming with a lot of heaviness, but God, I'm coming before you as well, humbly in my spirit. God, I'm calling upon you. God, I'm gonna worship you regardless, but Lord, I am coming with hope. I'm coming with hope, knowing and believing and trusting and putting full faith in your guidance and putting full faith in your direction, putting full faith in your power, putting full faith in your will, God, whatever it is that that could be. And whenever he came with all of that, we see the Lord Jesus reached out and touched him. Touched him. How many of us here this morning that are looking for that touch? Jesus put forth his hand. God, I need your hand to handle, God, what is handling me. God, I need you to put forth your hand, Lord, to help me in this situation. The Bible says that Jesus put forth his hand. This man needed the touch of God on him. and God touched him. We also see that the Bible says that there in verse three, and Jesus put forth his hand and touched him saying, I will be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Not only do we see that Jesus handled what was handling him, but we also see that Jesus healed the man. Not only did Jesus handle the man, but we see that Jesus healed the man. In other words, he gave cleansing to his life. And that's exactly, it's exactly what Christ can do with our sins. When we come to the Lord with our heaviness and everything that we got, we have a God in heaven that comes in and we say, Lord, this is what I got in my life. God, I'm praying for your will. If it's your will, let me be cleansed today. And listen, for the lost sinner, yes, it is God's will that you get cleansed and that you get saved, because he's not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. and the Lord Jesus is willing to forgive, the Lord Jesus is willing to save, the Lord Jesus is willing to cleanse any sinner that comes across our path, that comes across his path. We see right here, the Bible tells in our text, the Lord Jesus touched him, and the Bible says there in verse three, he says, I will be thou clean. And immediately, his leprosy was cleansed. and that which had a hold on a man, that which had the handle on the man, the leprosy that was handling the man, the Lord Jesus through the power of his word and his touch, the Lord Jesus handled what was handling him, and immediately he was cleansed. I'm thankful that whenever I got saved, that I didn't have to wait a while for my sins to be forgiven. It was something that took place like that. When I asked the Lord Jesus to forgive me and save me, just like that, the Lord Jesus forgave me and washed me of all my sin. He cleansed me. of unrighteousness, and gave me what I didn't have. As the Bible says, there is none righteous, no, not one. But he gave me what I did not have, and that was righteousness, and that was holiness, and that was life. That's what he gave me. The Bible shows us here that this man was handled by the Lord. We see this man was healed by the Lord. It could be, as I said, you come with some burdens, or you come with some struggles, or maybe there's some sins that you're trying to get victory over, whatever it could be. As we run our Christian race, the Bible says that there are sins that easily beset us, and then there are also just weights that are in our life. And as we are running our Christian race and we are doing everything we can to battle these besetting sins, these things that get the best of us all the time, or just weights that are in our life that are hindering us, we pray and we say, God, I need you to help me with this. Cleanse me of this. And the Lord says there in verse three, I will be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. I'm thankful that I don't have to wait till tomorrow to be changed. I'm thankful I can be changed right now today. The last thing, not only did Jesus handle the man, but Jesus healed the man. We also see that Jesus helped the man. Notice what happens there in verse four. The Bible says, and Jesus said to him, see thou tell no man, but go thy way and show thyself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded for a testimony unto them. Because once the man was cleansed, there was a ceremonial Levitical law that he needed to go through. And so he says, listen, this is what you do. Go to the priest and offer the gift that Moses required. They're in the Levitical law. And do the process of what you're supposed to do. For what reason, there in verse four, for a testimony unto them. For a testimony to who? Listen, I'm gonna do what God tells me to do, so it'll be a testimony to the priest, to the religious crowd, that Jesus has done this that nobody else could do, but also to a lost and dying world of people that are standing around, that this is what Christ can do for a man. For a testimony. God gave him help. God guided him and directed him in the next steps that he needed to take. The next steps that he needed to take. And we praise the Lord here this morning, that when God saves us, he doesn't just leave us where we are, but what does God do? He saves us, and he equips us, and through his word, he transforms us by the renewing of our mind, and he helps us to grow in the knowledge of the Lord. And as we follow him and we grow in the Lord, he directs our paths, he helps us and our decisions in our life pushes us forth in the right direction, in the correct direction. And so here this morning, we can see and understand that, listen, even as us, as sinners here today, if you're lost, you bring to God whatever it is that you got, regardless of what it is and regardless of how ugly it is, regardless of whether the world or the devil or anybody else told you that the Lord Jesus would not forgive you such a thing, you just bring it to the Lord and you just let the Lord work on it. You let the great physician work in your life and work and work and work in whatever it is that he needs to touch in your life You let God handle the issue. You let God handle the problem. And then when God moves in, he begins to do things that we cannot do and nobody else can do. And then the Bible shows us here that we see that he gives guidance and direction. Jesus said to him, see thou tell no man, but go thy way and show the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded for a testimony unto them. Because you know, the priest would say, how did this happen? How did you get cleansed? What took place? Because there was a religious crowd that didn't believe in the Lord. There was a religious crowd that didn't believe in the claims of Christ. And so it says, listen, you go and you do this, what you're supposed to do. And he says, and it'll be a testimony unto them. You'll be able to verify what I've done in your life. It'll be a testimony unto those people that Jesus is who he says he is. Because listen, it's all about lifting up Christ, amen? So the miracle is fantastic, but we want to lift up Jesus in the process. Let it be a testimony unto them. Let it be a testimony to everybody else what God's done. So we see that Jesus handled it, handled him. We see that Jesus healed him, and we see that Jesus helped him to go in the right direction. So whether you, whatever it is that you come, you come heavy this morning, come humbly before the Lord, and come hoping and trusting and believing that the God that we serve today can do all things. Let us pray together today. Father, we come to you this morning, we do thank you, Lord, for your blessings. God, we are eternally grateful for your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. God, as we sit here today, Lord, I pray that you would continue to speak to our hearts. Lord, we need you greatly this morning. Lord, we all have something in our life that are burdensome to us. We all have some things in our life that we're battling with. Lord, whatever it is that we got today, Lord, we come to you with this heaviness. But we come humbly before your throne and we lay these things down before you. with a hope knowing that you can do all things. So God, we're praying that you would handle this that's in our life. And God, we're praying, Lord, that you would touch us. We're praying, Lord, today that you would change us. We're praying, God, that you'd cleanse us. Lord, just have your perfect will and way in us. As the piano plays, Miss Amanda will sing here in just a moment. But as the piano plays today, it could be that you're sitting here this morning saying, preacher, I don't know Christ as my savior, but I sure would like to. I would like to be forgiven this morning. I would like to be cleansed. I would like to have my life changed by the Lord Jesus Christ. All that come to him, the Bible says, all in no wise cast out. So whatever it is that you have in your heart and your life today, you bring it to him. Bring it all to him. If you're here this morning, say, preacher, I've never accepted Christ as my savior, but I sure would like to. Would you just slip your hand up so I can see you? Anybody, anywhere. It's just between me and the Lord. Anybody, anywhere. Preacher, I'd like to get saved this morning. I've never trusted Christ, but I sure would like to know more about it. If we can stand to our feet, we're gonna open up the altar this morning, and whatever it is that you need to bring to the Lord, I encourage you to come. Whatever burdens you have, whatever it is that you could be struggling with, battling with, I encourage you to bring it to the Lord, knowing for sure in all faith and hope that the God of heaven can reach out and touch it and has authority and power over your situation.
