for the article 16 chapter 16
article 16 good works is where we're at and we've made it down
to Isaiah 64 7 we are let me back up just a
touch we're at point number 3 and we're 3 quarters away in the
point number 3 it says but believers are not on these grounds to grow
negligent as if they are not bound to perform any duty unless
given a specific motion by the Spirit. But they must be diligent
in stirring up the grace of God that is in them. We talked about
this last week. This is actually talking about the fact that while
salvation is monergistic, sanctification is synergistic. In other words,
there's going to be times when you don't feel, quote unquote,
like serving the Lord and worshiping the Lord. The Bible talks about being a
sloth and a sluggard and lazy in your salvation and your faith.
The Bible says that we are to work out our own salvation with
fear and trembling. The reason it says that is not
because you're actually working your way into salvation, but
the evidence of your salvation is your own personal walk. You
can come here to church because mom wakes you up, because dad
wakes you up, because your brother and sister wakes you up, and
you're dragged kicking and screaming, and I don't wanna wake up, and
all this stuff, or you can come to church because you've decided
that as a Christian, this is the most important thing you
can do, is to come to church and grow in the word of God,
and to listen, and be obedient, and to be an active participant
in church. There's many people that come
to church, and they come in, and they sit, and their whole
entire Christianity is, well, I came to church, They're waiting
for their girlfriends or lusting over their boyfriends or waiting
for the girl or guy to come in the room that they can look at,
the people they can giggle around with and play with. They could
care less about Christianity. And they say, but I'm a Christian.
Well, what we believe is if you're a Christian, you are going to
stir up your own work of sanctification. You don't have to wait for the
Holy Spirit to shake you and beat you to death because the
Holy Spirit is supposed to live inside of you. Do we agree with
that? The Holy Spirit is supposed to
live inside of you. And if he lives inside of you, what should
happen in our lives? Nobody should have to beg us to be a Christian.
We should want to. We should want to live it out
more than anybody else because we know that our witness affects
everybody around us. what other people see, how they
act, what they think about Christianity, what they think about God. The
Bible says that because of the way you act, and it's not an
accusation against anybody, but this is what the scripture says,
because the way you act in your Christianity and what your faith
looks like, you cause an unbelieving world to blaspheme God because
of the way you behave. In other words, they look and
say, is that your stupid Christianity? Is that the way you think being
a Christian is? You know what, if that's what you got, To heck
with your God. I don't want your God. I don't
care about your God and everything else they can say. How many people
hate Christ because of the Christians that are around? Yeah. I've heard
people say it. It is an excuse. And I agree.
It's a hypocrisy. It's an excuse. However, they're
not all wrong. Because, yeah. Which makes them
just as big a hypocrite as everybody else. Yeah. But think about this. There's
the two sides here. People that come to church, they
could care less about the church. They don't ever participate.
They're never active. They never get involved. They
don't want to lead. They don't want to study. They
don't want to mentor. They don't want to disciple.
The Bible says we're supposed to stir up one another to love
and good works. Right? Now, I know we haven't
even gotten to the passage yet. The Bible says we're supposed
to stir one another up to love and good works, and most Christians,
they never try to stir each other up to love and good works. They
could care less during the week about their own personal sanctification. When's the last time you put
down your phone or put down your computer or put down your Kindle,
your notepad, your iPad, your this, your that, or whatever
else, and picked a Bible up and picked up a book about God The
Bible, yes, and then a book about God that teaches you something
where you can stand up and defend your faith or you can help somebody
else do it. When's the last time you applied Christianity to your
own life and led somebody in a Bible study? When's the last
time you applied it to your life and took time to step out of
your own personal world and actually made a difference in somebody
else's life? Now, when's the last time you studied any one
of the, what, hundred and fifty two or doctrines we've talked
about three hundred doctors we whatever we talked about here
at the church. I try to make sure bring out a different doctrine
that we're talking about every week. Something soteriology eschatology
anything anything. I mean. Pneumatology you name
it. I talk about it. I bring out
some kind of doctrine now when's the last time you took it for
yourself and said I want to know more about what God does the
Holy Spirit or what what God does in sanctifying you know
children or anything. When's the last time you grabbed
hold of it and said, I want to know what God says about this? Because I'll tell
you something. The answer is in the Bible. The answer is in
the Bible. The answer is in your study and
your diligence. This is not a lecture. This is a discussion. And I want
you to think about this because it is so serious about your own
personal sanctification. We believe that Christians will
seek their own sanctification. What does it mean if you're not
and you continuously don't seek sanctification? One of the two,
I haven't met too many backsliders. I've met a whole bunch of people
that aren't saved. I've met a bunch of people that aren't trying
to go forward, but I haven't met a bunch of backsliders. I
mean, I'm telling you that it's possible, but I tell you what,
I tell you what, I see so few people that, in the typical Baptist
church, we've always heard, oh, you're backsliding, you're backsliding.
And it was every week, you need to rededicate your life, rededicate
your life, because then that's why they use that term backsliding.
But for the most part, those who are truly saved, They evidence
it by their lives. Yeah, you know, you can have
those times of stagnation where the where like we're just saying
the Lord's not giving a special quote-unquote unction of the
spirit And you know, you don't hear the stirring up of the emotions
and everything else. Do you need? Me or you or you? guys Do you need anybody to hold
your hand and carry you on Christianity? Yeah Yeah I agree. Yeah. Ray Comfort says
that he used to, when he was young in the faith and he first
started in the pastorate, He was an associate pastor and he
would talk to people about the gospel all the time, share the
gospel with them and he thought it was his job to go get them
and bring them to church and beg them to come to church and
plead with them, oh won't you come to church and won't we have
Bible study and this that and the other. He said it was so
bad there were some people I would read Bible to them and then he
realized Yeah, you have to force feed a baby for milk. That's
a dead baby. I'm sorry, but that's what it
is. You gotta force feed somebody with this? The stuff that's life? There's something wrong. And
Ray Comfort said, what I realized was I wasn't trying to force
Christians to behave like Christians, I was trying to force the non-converts
to behave like Christians. Because they didn't want it to
begin with. You know, and this is exactly what we're talking
about. This is what we believe that we will not be negligent
in our own sanctification. Philippians 2.12, I'm just gonna
go through these real quick and we'll go to Isaiah 64.7. Philippians
2.12 says, Wherefore my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not
as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work
out your own salvation with fear and trembling. In other words,
what he's saying is, look, you've obeyed the word of God, not as
if I was right there in front of you demanding it, but because
you're truly saved. He's saying, do it even more
than I'm not here. Exactly yeah, yeah, and he's
not like you said he's not talking about your actual salvation.
He's talking about the thing that this way There was a time
when you were actually saved if you're a Christian But the
Bible says I was saved I am being saved and I will be saved Salvation
has a threefold promise. There's a salvation that happened
at one point in specific time. There is a salvation that comes
throughout the rest of your life that God continuously keeps you.
And there's a salvation that happens in the future when he
will save you from the wrath to come. The very judgment of
God. Yeah. Yeah. But here you're right,
it's talking about the sanctification of the Spirit of God. And you're
exactly right, that's exactly what it's talking about. In Hebrews
6, 11 through 12, Now, just real quick, what would you think that
passage is talking about? Hebrews 611, what do you think
that passage is talking about? There, but listen to this. This
passage is directly talking about looking back at those Christians
who died in faith, who lived in faith, and following their
example. Those that were patient to inherit
the promises. He says, we desire that every
one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance, the same
diligence as the other believers throughout history. Okay, he's
talking about show that same type of exhortation exertion
that effort as you've seen from the Christians throughout all
the past. We don't know exactly when Hebrews was written. I do
believe it was a Polish that wrote it and he would have went
through tremendous persecution strife and troubles trials and
tribulations and what he's talking about here is okay you say you're
a Christian Great. Your full assurance and your
hope is your diligent walk and your faithful walk in Christianity.
Now look at all those that died in the past. I mean, he could
be going back to Stephen, who was one of the first martyrs
talked about in Christianity after Christ died and rose again.
You look at the Book of Acts and you see Stephen right away.
He gets martyred. with an incredible story. You
know I mean what kind of story is that that he actually recited
the history of Israel to the Jewish people and he condemned
all of them. I mean he condemned every single
person in the room that so much so that they stoned him to death
right then and there. So we're going to start into
Isaiah sixty four seven and whoever wants to start out I'll let you
in and read on that. Wow. So what happens. Israel being a prime prime example.
And that's why Isaiah wrote this. Why would God want us to see
the fall of Israel in the scripture? Why would God want us to have
this written down? The scripture tells us that these things were
written down so that you might know how to stand against this,
how to guard against this, so that this might be your example
of the things to do and the things not to do. Isaiah 64 7, don't
do this. No one called on the name of
the Lord. No one stirred themselves up. To take hold of the Lord. They hid their face from God.
And as a result. He has consumed them because
of their iniquity. You don't want that to be your
story. You don't want that to be. Well, I tasted the good fruit
of God. I came to church and that stupid
pastor guy he kept droning on about God and holiness and Christianity
and the sovereignty of God he kept on talking about it over
and over and over again about need to be saved and he talked
about the need of sanctification he just kept running his mouth
and wouldn't shut up and you know what I heard it all and
it sounded really good but you know I didn't need it and this
is what happens that's a great warning don't do that You know
don't do that. You know that's that's one of
those things where you you need to hunker down and look down
and say is God saying that would happen to me. Well there's a
passage in Scripture tells us that those that have tasted of
the goodness of God and have rejected him. They've tasted
of God's salvation. They've tasted of all the glories
of heaven and they've rejected God. There remains no repentance
for them. And you say wait a minute what
does that mean. I'll tell you what it means. People have come
into church, now I'm not talking about just this one, they've
come into many churches, and they've sat under good preaching
and listened to good teaching for years, and they've never
once done anything. They've heard it, and they've
heard it, and they've heard it, and they've said, it's good enough, I don't
need any more. They've never done anything about Christianity
and never meant anything to them, they could care less. There's no repentance
for them. They'll stand before a holy God and they'll say but
Lord I went to church and I sang in the choir and I did all this
stuff and I cast out demons in your name and I did all this
stuff in your name and he says depart from me you work of iniquity for I never
knew you. That's terrible. Don't do that. Well point number
four is those who attain the greatest height. which is possible
in this life in their obedience to God are still so far from
being able to supererogate and to do more than God requires
that they fall short of much which they are bound to do in
their duty to God. Job 9, two to three. Supererogate. Okay. I believe you. I believe you. I wasn't waiting
for Pauline or whoever that is. But I appreciate it. Job 9, 2-3. Somebody want to get that one?
Go ahead. Wow. Wow, that's a big indictment. Did you catch what that meant?
He asked the question, how can a man be just before God? And
if you go up before God and you want to contend with Him, one
time in a thousand, you still can't answer it. You know, whatever
number you want to put there. I mean, that's pretty big. And
you think about it, what this confessional is talking about
is the fact that no matter how great you are, Number one, you
don't merit any favor before God. You can't give it to anybody
else. And you've not done anything
that is required of you. Galatians 5.17. Who's next? Kristen? Okay. What you're going to notice
is building up here when we get a little further down, you're
going to notice that in this section especially, what's building
up here is the absolute impossibility of man's goodness on his own. Why are you being sanctified?
Well, the only reason is because the Holy Spirit living inside
you, if you do anything while it's synergistic, if you do anything,
it's because God did it in you. OK, yes, God wants you to step
up and be faithful on your own. But you can't even do that without
the power of the Holy Spirit. So even if it's on your own,
you don't deserve any credit because you didn't do it on your own. OK. So I want to make sure that that
caveat is there. But what you're gonna notice is, is that it keeps
building up that, as we go further in, it keeps building up that
they wanna make sure you understand that Gary does not have enough
merit to save anyone. Mom and dad does not have enough
merit to save their kids. You don't have enough merit to
save your grandkids. You don't have enough merit to
save anyone else, including yourself. All your righteous deeds are
as filthy rag If you stand before God, Job says, you won't even
be able to answer him one time out of a thousand. How are you
going to be just before God? And Job proved it because he
wanted to have an audience with God and complained for 31 chapters
about, I want to fight with God, I want to argue with God, I want
to contend with God and say, hey, I'm righteous. And what
happened? As soon as he did, what happened? When God showed
up, Job shut up. He couldn't answer. He should
have listened to himself in chapter 9. He wouldn't have gone through
all that stuff. But in Galatians 5, Christian
just read it. Our flesh, Christian, Christian,
does your body want to do the things that your spirit tells
you is not right? Does your body want you to seek
after. There's a passage in scripture
I put on Facebook. There's a passage in scripture that says that God
hates those, God's soul hates those who love violence. That's all of America today.
I mean, every pastor in the world goes after the MMA stuff. They
wanna all do all that. Everybody's talking about how
big and bad and tough I am. I can beat somebody, I can do
this, I can do that. And to prove it, I'm gonna go watch this movie
or that movie, this violent thing or that violent thing and put
it in my heart, my mind. This is what's gonna consume my day.
Of every stripe and variety, we're all guilty of it. No matter
what level you wanna talk about, we're all guilty of it. God says
he wants us to be children of peace, not of violence. And we see it all over the place.
And this is Galatians 5. The flesh lusts against the spirit
and the spirit against the flesh. That's who we are. Christian,
if that's who you are, how can you make yourself right before
God? How can you stand before a holy God? Well, the truth of
the matter is you can't do it. But the spirit inside of you
must war against your flesh and you need to cooperate with that
spirit. You need to work with that spirit to fight against
the things of the world. And the only way you can do that
is with that Bible that's in your hand. The only way you can
do that is with the scripture, studying to show yourself approved.
I've hidden thy word in my heart that I might not sin against
thee, O Lord. Right? Thy word have I hidden
in my heart so I might not sin against thee. It's said it in
several different ways. The whole meaning there is hide God's word
in your heart. You know, and it will keep you
from sin. I don't know who it was, but somebody said that either
the Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from
the Bible. You don't want to read the Bible when you're feeling
convicted, when you're lusting over men and women, when you're
doing things you shouldn't be doing, when you're acting the
ways you shouldn't be acting, when your attitude's wrong, when your heart's wrong.
You don't want to seek after God. But when you do, and you're
on your pinnacle, the best day of your Christianity, Luke 17,
10 should be your motto. Who's got it? Who wants it? Raising? Unprofitable? Servants? Huh. Think about that. Who deserves
the praise? If you read that entire section,
what he says is, a slave owner does not come into the house
and bring his slave in from the field and say, sit down here,
I'm gonna feed you, let me take care of you, let me protect you,
let me take care of you. He says, no, the slave goes and
makes the meal, and then after the owner is done eating, after
he's cleaned up the mess, then the slave himself eats. You're exactly right. Break even. You're exactly right. Now let's look at it. I agree. Carry out a little bit more on
that unprofitable word there. Unprofitable being a financial
term. Now let's look at it as a spiritual term. If you're unprofitable
to God, that means you are not, no, no. You can be clean before
God, you can be holy before God, but in order for you to stand
before God, you must possess positive righteousness. In other words, right here, we
are unprofitable servants. A financial term, unprofitable,
but a spiritual term, you must be righteous. In other words,
it's not good enough for you to go clean. It's not good enough
for you to go sinless. Okay? There is nobody that's
ever done that, but even if you could, you want, I'm not talking
about Christ, I'm talking about everybody else. There's nobody
alive except for Christ, but he's the exception because he
is the rule. No one alive can go before God,
who is Christ, and say, I am clean before you let me into
heaven. He would look at you and say, well, that puts you
at neutral. Now what are you going to pay to get in the door?
In order for you to inherit heaven's goods, you must have heaven's
currency. And heaven's currency is righteousness. And we don't
have it. Yeah. That's not enough. It doesn't
make you righteous. You still are an unprofitable
servant. And that's what Jesus is alluding to. And I'm glad
you said something about that, because it made me think about the righteousness
issue here. Think, Luke 17, 10. So likewise ye, when ye shall
have done all the things that were commanded of you. Like you
just said, all you're doing is neutral. You're not doing above
and beyond. You haven't earned anything.
You haven't merited anything. And you're right, you don't have
the ability to do anything. And by the way, the only way you
can do what's commanded of you is the Holy Spirit live inside
you doing it, and he's doing the exhortation, not you really.
But it goes on, it says, we are unprofitable servants. We have
done that which was our duty to do. That's all you've done.
Congratulations, you're neutral. your best effort. And you think
about it, the people we laud, the highest, we think about the
most, you know, we listen to men like John MacArthur, wonderful,
fabulous, godly man, blows the socks off anything I've ever
done. And God would look at him and say, you're an unprofitable
servant. But John MacArthur, who understands these things,
would say, that's exactly who I am. I don't deserve any praise
for this. You know, there's a lot of people that Well, there's
a lot of people that they brag about everything they do. They've
got to be on Facebook. They've got to get on the YouTube,
on the social media. They've got to talk about all the debates
they've done, all the arguments they've done, all the discussions
they've done, all the books they've written. And they want to be
elevated as the top echelon, the elite, the best of the best,
the person that deserves the most accolades and rewards and
should be able to tell everybody else what to do. Because they
are the authority, the leaders in any given field. But the problem
is, is there no better than anyone else. They're an unprofitable
servant of God. They've only done their duty
and they don't deserve any other accolade than anybody else. In
our society, however, we look and we say we honor somebody
who does achieve some notoriety and we do that. That's not wrong,
but it's wrong to put it out of place. Point number five,
we got about 10 minutes and we'll be done. by our best works merit pardon
of sin or eternal life from the hand of God because of the great
disproportion between our best works and the glory to come. And because the infinite distance
which is between us and God, by the way, if you don't hear
the anti-Roman Catholic teaching right here, then you missed the
point. You gotta understand, this comes out of the Protestant
Reformation, right after the Protestant Reformation, you had
the Anabaptists, the Reformed Baptists, if you will, who were
not really Reformed Baptists, they've always been Reformed,
before the Reformers Reformed. These were the men of God of
old, as Spurgeon talks about, that long lineage of true believers,
who can trace their line back all the way to John the Baptist,
if you will. And they never were part of the
Roman Catholic Church, so they didn't have to come out of the
Roman Catholic Church. And these people have always said that
the Roman Catholic Church was wrong. And this is part of their
confession. This is why they hold this as
their confession. We cannot, by our best works, merit pardon
of sin. It doesn't matter how hard you
work, you cannot earn your own righteousness. You cannot earn
your own way to heaven. You don't work hard enough to
merit salvation. By the way, that means you can't
pay for it. What is it, when a coin in the coffer rings from
purgatory, a soul does spring? Isn't that something close to
what Tetzel used to say all the time? Made a lot of money for
the Roman Catholic Church that way, but he didn't do anything
for heaven. It goes on to say this, and because of the infinite
distance which is between us and God, with our works, we cannot
profit to satisfy God concerning the debt that we owe our account. on account of our sins. Romans
3.20 I mean. Now I want you to think about that passage.
Living in this world will not justify you before God. Living
in this sinful society will not justify you before God. And trying
to keep God's law will not justify you before God. You will not
merit justification, eternal life, a pardon from sin, righteousness. You merit nothing but what the
law gives and that's condemnation. No matter how hard you try to
work. The Bible says that the law came
in to prove or to show us what sin was. It came in to show us
that we were condemned because you think up until the Ten Commandments
While we had what the Bible says, that natural law living inside
of us, no, don't murder, kill, lie, those things like that,
honor God. While there's that natural law, there was still
not a complete understanding of the impossibility of righteousness.
The law came in and the people immediately said, yeah, we can
do that. When they should have immediately said, Lord, there's
no way in the world we can do this. I mean, they broke the
first, second, third commandment in 20 seconds. Moses was up on the hill for
40 days and before it was over with Moses comes down in 30,000
of them were Sent to judgment Because of their wickedness they
made a golden calf It didn't take them any time at all before
they rose up to play the Bible says The law is our schoolmaster
to bring us to Christ. Why because the law threatens
our condemnation So trying to keep the law All it does is if
you can keep the law perfectly, it would put you at neutral,
an unprofitable servant. It would put you at neutral,
yeah. But that's not the law's purpose. The law's purpose, and
I've said this before, The law cannot forgive you. That's why
I've told you that there is no such thing as arbitrary forgiveness. There is no forgiveness. The
debt has to be paid. The law demands payment. It will
not accept anything but payment. So the law takes you before the
justice of God and demands satisfaction. And you can't pay the debt. You
cannot do anything to merit your way out of it. You cannot give
enough. And the reason is because you're a sinner. And all you
ever do is sin. And everything that you try to
appease the law with is sinful. All our righteous deeds are as
filthy rags. Ephesians 2, 8 and 9. Let's go
ahead and do that one. I do not understand why this
passage does not end all Roman Catholic theology. I don't understand
it. I really don't. Because in Roman
Catholicism, salvation is a work. It's a work and a process that
must be carried out throughout your life. It is a work that
must, a venial grace, a merit, there are all kinds of things. Well, they don't even, they don't
have a Bible to read it. I agree. Who wants to do Romans 4-6? Yeah,
that's good. Let me back up here. Romans 4
six. Even as David also describeth.
The blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness
without works. It's. There goes 5 yeah. But I mean 7 mean. But think
about what it's saying here. David in the Psalms is talking
about the fact that. the blessed man is the one that
God himself imputes righteousness to. That's in the Old Testament. David is saying that the blessed
man is one that God imputes righteousness to, but the problem is, without
the coming Messiah, there is no imputed righteousness. Without
the coming Messiah, there is no imputation of righteousness.
So even David saw that there must be a redeemer that would
himself impute righteousness to you. He's saying, the Lord
said unto my Lord, sit at thy right hand until I make my enemies
your footstool. What he's saying is that the Lord is going to
send the Lord himself to impute righteousness upon the Lord's
people. whom God imputeth righteousness without works. David cannot be
saying that God imputes righteousness by the act or the work of man.
He's saying that God imputes righteousness which he cannot
do for a sinful wicked man that's under condemnation. He has to
be looking to a further time when righteousness is imputed
along with the salvation and satisfaction of sin. He has to
be looking to the cross. I don't think he could be looking
at anything else. but the cross of Christ. You sat better over
here. My screen looks bad. When we
have done all we can, we have only done our duty and are still
unprofitable servants. And in any case, insofar as our
works are good, they originate from the work of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5, 22 and 23. Hey Wyatt, you ever read this
one? You want to read this one? Temperance well What do you think
if you're an unprofitable servant any good that's in you is based
on the fact that God has? imparted the Holy Spirit into
your heart and he lives inside of you now and The spirit the
fruit now. I want you to look at this There's
a word right here. I want you to pay attention to
What does that word say go back go back? fruit The singular fruit
of the Spirit has many flavors. It's the best way I can describe
it for you. There's not plural, it's singular. But the fruit
of the Spirit, in other words, the giving of the Spirit, what
the Holy Spirit gives to us. It's a fruit salad, okay, there
you go. Okay, all right, all right. Look,
I'm not arguing with you, I love fruit salad. But think about
it, the fruit of the Spirit The many different flavors of the
Spirit. What God gives to us is love, joy, peace, patience,
or long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Those are the fruits of the Spirit.
There's other passages as well. But think, does this define your
life? Is this defining your life more
and more? How are you doing on love? Are
you loving towards people? What about your joy? Does your
life possess more joy? I'm not talking about happiness.
We've already talked about the difference between joy and happiness. I did two
sermons on it. Remember, we're going to go back and preach on
that if you want. But we talked about joy, right? Does your life
possess more joy in the Lord? It's a spiritual joy. It's not
about the things that happen to you. and the happenstance
of your life, but about your personal heart, where your desire
is, where your love is, where your satisfaction is, to be in
the things of God. What about peace? Are you at
peace with God? Or are you in constant rebellion
against His commandments, against His Word, against His desire
for you? No. Are you at peace with other people?
It's not always possible to be at peace with everyone. But are
you at peace with the brothers and sisters that are around you?
Do you seek peace with others? Do you want to be reconciled
one to another? Do you want to be in a right relationship and
an understanding relationship with each other to build one
another up? That's what a peaceful person
does. Long suffering. We can all work on that. I think.
Do you blow your top? Do you get angry? Do you just
blow your stack, lose it? As soon as you don't get your
way, do you just lose your mind? Yeah. Do you, well that's the
other point, do you have this, I deserve blah, I deserve this,
I'm not getting this so I'm gonna just go drop Christianity, I'm
gonna drop worship of God, I'm not going to church today, I
deserve my time, my this, that and the other. That long suffering
is a steadfastness in patience, it's a steadfastness in joy and
peace, but it's also a steadfastness in the word of God and the truth
of God. you have a long-suffering heart. What about gentleness
and goodness? Faith. You know, these issues
of being gentle and good, you know, the book of Proverbs and
Psalms talks about it's better to have a dry morsel than be
in a house that's full of contention and strife. It's better to, well,
Ladies, how many times does it talk about, you know, it's better
to live on the very corner of the highest part of your house
than to live in the house with a quarrelsome, bickering woman.
It's what it says, you know. It says it many times in those
passages. But the Bible also talks about
being around angry men who are contentious and are quick to
fight, quick to brawl. Don't be around brawlers. Don't
be, you know, don't associate with them. So women and men. Husbands and wives brothers and
sisters it covers it all That's that goodness and gentleness
that faith meekness is that that gentle heart that kind heart
that desire to to just Not always be boastful and get your way
What about temperance was temperance me, okay? sober-minded I would
think but temperance is the idea that that you are steady. Nothing in the world like being
around somebody, yeah. Nothing in the world like being
around people that you know that they are steady and you're steady,
you're calm. There's nothing in the world like it because
you know that you can disagree, you can even have debates and
argue and you're just steady, okay. You can not see eye to
eye on every situation and things are just steady. Now here's the
question. Did Peter the Apostle beat Paul the Apostle to death
when Paul said to Peter, you know, why are you behaving the
way you're behaving around the Jewish people, around the Gentiles?
I mean, no. Paul just chastised him in front
of the whole group, talks to him about the fact that, you
know, here you are acting one way when the Jews are around,
what's wrong with you? You know, Peter could have been Peter the, Simon
Peter the crazy nutball and picked up a sword and said, let's go
nuts. But he didn't. He showed temperance. He listened.
He was calm. There was a disagreement. They
worked it out. That's part of that fruit of the Spirit. That's
part of that gentleness that comes from the fruits of the
Spirit. But the point here is, is all of this originates from
the Holy Spirit. Listen. All of it originates
from the Holy Spirit. And we need to remember that.
So, we're going to stop. We're going to stop that right
here. No, we're going to stop now. We're going to stop here.
We're going to go. The next week we're going to
go to even then the good works are so defiled by us and so mixed
with weakness and imperfection that they could not survive the
severity of God's judgment. We're going to really get into
that one. But so that's next week. That's right. Filthy rags. So who wants to close us in prayer.
