D-I-Y or T-T-F?

81

For the first time in his life, the prodigal is experiencing a want or need. Away from home in a foreign country, penniless after prodigal living, the young man is now facing famine. Nothing to eat nor does he have the means to buy food. So, what does he do? He has two choices, the same two we all have when God brings us to the place where we are in want or need. He first of all tries the 'D-I-Y' approach, that is 'Do It Yourself, dig your way out yourself, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps' approach. He got a job as a swine herder. But that didn't work out. He hits rock bottom. It is then that he considers the 'T-T-F' , the 'Trust The Father' approach. Coming to his senses, he had a new appreciation for his father's generosity and a new awareness of his own dire need. He determined that he would return to his father, humbly acknowledge that he had sinned against God and his dad, and then throw himself on the mercy of his father. Being hired help in his father's house was far better than starving to death. His trusting-the-father approach illustrates the process of repentance and faith. It begins with us coming to our senses, our eyes being opened to our true spiritual condition and need. It involves facing reality concerning the guilt, sorrow, and shame that our sin has produced. Godly sorrow is designed to lead us to repentance and to acknowledging the truth of the gospel. In the end, we too must throw ourselves upon the mercy of our Heavenly Father, trusting Him for forgiveness and new life. Now, we have the same choice: either we can choose to 'D-I-Y' or we can 'T-T-F--- Trust the Father!
