Submission is the wife’s main duty. It is not blind agreement, passive acceptance, or slavish subservience. Nor
is it demeaning (Jesus submitted to His parents). Submission is obedience to authority and Ephesians 5 does not call for
mutual submission. It calls wives to submit as to the Lord (!). Why? The first of the three New Testament emphases for
wives answers the why question: Because of headship. It is the authority of Christ. Headship means responsibility for
decisions and leadership.
