Jesus' Joy in Answered Prayer
Series The Book of Psalms
Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, one of my children asked at breakfast this morning, "What would happen if Zeus threw one of his lightning bolts at himself?"
We had to tell her that Zeus has never shown any suicidal tendencies, and that he wouldn't do such a thing. But the question does prompt a bigger question — the question of "How strong is God?"
As we think about that question this evening, look at the first and last verses of this psalm. They both speak about God's strength. As Ps 17 is framed by righteousness, so this psalm is framed by strength — Yahweh's strength. How strong is God? He is strong enough to give limitless joy to His king. He is strong enough to give limitless triumph to His king. Since His king is our king, the king's joy is ours and the king's triumph is ours. The LORD is the strength of His Anointed King, and in that divine strength God's King triumphs and rejoices and teaches us to triumph and rejoice.
