How To Think About Your Situation
Series This Day and That Day
My grandson asked me the other day, "Papa, what was it like when you were growing up?" Delighted by the question, I blurted our "Better!" I told him that we used to play outside until the streetlights went on. We played cops and robbers, Cowboys and Indians and hide and seek. We played everything in the street: kickball, baseball, football, wiffle ball, basketball, street hockey until that infrequent moment when someone would yell "cah!" The driver would slow down as we would all go to the side of the road until he or she went by. People drove slower in those days and they didn't have cell phones. Today playing in the street would be like taking your life in your hands. Saturday mornings, we would watch cartoons. They were better cartoons. Bugs Bunny. Donald Duck. Elmer Fudd. Foghorn Leghorn. Invariably one of those cartoon characters would have to decide about the situation he was in. He could go one way or the other. On one of his shoulders was an Angel whispering in his ear and telling him to do the right thing. On the other shoulder was the devil whispering in his ear to do the opposite thing. These cartoon writers got it right. How to think about your situation is crucial. We are between two polar opposites! We find ourselves in situations. We are always in a context. There are circumstances we are facing in our lives. The Lord would have you think about your situation in one way and the devil would have you think about your situation in quite another. Sometimes we get confused and listen to the wrong voice. But we need to listen to the Lord and rebuke the suggestions of the enemy of our souls. Perspective is everything! God uses a temporal problem for eternal good.
