Covenant Renewal

Aim: To understand and appreciate covenant renewal (every Sabbath).

Doctrine: Covenant renewal embraces the church's past, present, and future. It owns the sins of God's people, but it also owns the God of all grace.

Exegesis: The church's responsibility in covenant renewal: we are to implore God (on the basis of His mercy) (v. 32); we are to justify God (on the basis of His law) (vv. 33-35); we are to glorify God (on the basis of His gospel) (vv. 36-38).

Further application: How the church practices covenant renewal: when in faith we gather around Christ in Sunday worship, we receive His fresh supplies of grace (through the preached word and the sacrament).

Key verse: v. 38 ''And because of all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it; our leaders, our Levites, and our priests seal it.''
