A Prayer for Genuine Disciples
Series Gospel of John
As Jesus prays His Hight Priestly Prayer, He identifies those for whom He prays -- His Genuine Disciples -- in a way that gives hope and encouragement to those who trust in Him. Because we know that Jesus is committed to the mission of His Father to save His people and set them apart for His glory, we who belong to Him by faith must understand what it means to be one whom He has set apart from the world as we seek to live in obedience to Him for His glory.
I. Jesus' Prayer makes His mission clear – He came to make God known! v 6a
II. Jesus' Prayer tells us who these genuine disciples are. vv 6-8
(1) A genuine disciple has been taken out of this world to belong to Christ! v 6b
(2) A genuine disciple – because of this grace – will keep hold of God's Word! v 6c
(3) A genuine disciple knows who Christ is! You v 7
(4) A genuine disciples receives God's words into his life as God's Word! v 8a
(5) A genuine disciple has an assurance that will center his/her life on Christ! v 8b
III. Jesus's Prayer gives to us a reason to have assurance that we really are His. vv 9-10
(1) He's praying for you here, if you're a Xn! He's interceding for you! Take v 9
(2) Our security comes from the fact of God's claim on us through Christ for His glory v 10
