Those that are first-timers here
this morning, we've been looking at a series on the thought of
the God of nothing. Looking at a God that can take
absolutely nothing and make something very special out of it. Our first
service we preached in this series, we looked at a God that moves
over nothing. How he moved over the void and
the formless earth that was there and brought forth everything.
We looked at a God that moves toward nothing. Looking at the
story of David and Mephibosheth. How David went to where Mephibosheth
was. He could not get to David. He
brought him to the king's house. We placed him at the king's table.
Now our God brings us into His throne. We can't get there on
our own, but He can get us there. And the last time we were together
we looked at the thought of the God that moves with nothing. About the story of Isaac and
Abraham on Mount Moriah as Isaac was about to be sacrificed. And
how God provided Himself a sacrifice. This morning my attention is
turned to Genesis chapter 2 and verse 7. On the God that moves
in nothing. The God that moves in nothing. Here in Genesis chapter 2 and
verse 7 it says, And the Lord God formed man. out of the dust of the ground.
And breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became
a living soul. Father, we need your help this
morning. We need your touch. Lord, I pray
that you'd pour out your power upon this place that your presence
would be felt. Lord, we're so thankful for those
you brought our way. Lord, our regular members, we're
thankful for them and thankful for our guests that are here
today. Lord, I pray that you'd work
in the service, whatever needs to be done in each heart and
each life. Lord, I'm thankful for what you have been working
in my heart. I pray that it be helpful for those that are listening
this morning. We're thankful for the opportunity
to preach in Jesus' name. Amen. The God that moves in nothing. Here in Genesis chapter 2 and
verse 7 we see the creation of man. God has created the earth. He's created all of the animals.
He has created everything that is. But here in Genesis chapter
2 and verse 7, God lays out the blueprints for how He created
man. As I began to study that over
the last couple of weeks, God has really been moving in my
heart over this thing of how He moves in nothing. You go and you look at what is
said here. It says He formed man. Let's us know that there was
nothing there, there was nothing that existed about man until
God came and formed Him out of the dust of the ground. God that
moves in nothing. He can take nothing and do everything
from it. That's what He did when He created
the heavens and the earth. He said, let there be light and
there was light. It says He created the heavens
and the earth. He'd go through and everything
that He did, He created from nothing. But here in this text,
it's a very specific instance that is being discussed in the
dealing of the forming of man. You look at verse 7, it says,
the Lord God formed. First thing I want you to notice
this morning is the thought of the forming of nothing. God took
a whole bunch of nothing, put it all together and formed man
out of it. He took something that was unformable. That may not be a word, but I'm
making it one this morning. Has anybody in here ever tried
to make something out of a pile of dust? It don't work, does
it? Dust is not formable. Dust goes
everywhere. A little gust of wind and it
blows the dust. But it says God formed man out
of something that was Unusable. He formed man out of something
that was not, it wasn't worth anything. If anybody knows, any
of you ladies, you like dust in your house? It gets in everything. Gets everywhere. And you dust
today and you come back tomorrow and what is there? More dust. What am I saying? I'm saying
that God formed man out of something that was deemed as useless. And that's exactly what He did
in me. That's exactly what He has done
in anybody that is born again. He has taken something that was
useless, something that was worthless, and He has formed something out
of it. He took a whole lot of nothing
and put it together and made something out of it. When we
get born again, he moves over this nothing to make something. I asked a question when we started
our series, and I've asked it every week since. How many of
you, if you're being honest today, would say that you've had days
to where you felt like you were nothing? I have felt like nothing on many
an occasion. Can I let you in on a little
secret? That's exactly what I am without the help of God. It just so happens that I serve
a God that can do a whole lot with nothing. And He can take
absolute uselessness and make absolute usefulness out of it. That's what he did here in Genesis
chapter 2 and verse 7. God formed man. There was a purpose behind it.
There was a presentation behind it here. He formed man out of
nothing. There was no way I could ever
make anything out of myself. And there's no way if you're
not saved today that you could ever make anything out of yourself.
Because all you've got to work with is nothing. But God in His infinite grace
moved in my nothing and has produced everything. There was a day 25
years ago, this fall, that God came into my nothing. And He began to form some things
inside of me. And I got gloriously born again.
He formed something out of nothing. Talking about a God that moves
in nothing. If you're born again, He had
to move in you to make you into something that could have life.
If God has never moved in your direction, you can mark it down. No matter what you've said, no
matter what you've done, if God has not moved over your life,
when this thing's all over, you're going to hell. Because all you've
got's nothing. But praise God, there is a Father
in heaven. that desires to move over your
nothing. I'm going to pick on the baptizees
today a little bit during the sermon. But there was a day in Mike's
life here a while back that God moved in his nothing and has
changed some things and has made something out of it that could
not be done without the help of God. Old Zachary there, God's
moved in his nothing. Made everything. For those that
are born again, that's exactly what he does. He moves over the
nothing and he draws you to himself because there's no way that I
can ever get to God without him first making his move. You look at this text. Who made
the first move? The Lord God formed. There had
to be a moving of God before man could ever be. And in your life there has to
be a moving of God before man can ever be born again. Otherwise
we're left with nothing. Then I notice something else
in this text that's quite interesting. Not only do we see the forming
of nothing there in the first part of the verse, but we see
the filling of nothing. The Lord God formed man out of
the dust of the ground. He took something that was worthless,
something that was nothing, and He made man out of it. But understand,
at this point, man is still dead. Right? He formed man out of the
dust of the ground and man is still laying on the ground he
was formed out of, dead. But then I see the filling of
nothing. What are you talking about? Look
at what it says here in the text. The Lord God formed man out of
the dust of the ground and what did he do? He breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life. A God that can take and He can
fill your life with something. Man was still nothing at the
point that He formed him. He had formed man, but He hadn't
filled man yet. But I'm sure glad for a day that
God came into my life and He breathed into my spirit the breath
of life. There's another place in scripture
that deals with God's breath. If you go over to 2 Timothy 3
and verse 16. It says, All scripture is given
by the inspiration of God. That term, the inspiration of
God, literally translates out to God breathed. What's he saying? He's saying
what I'm serving is a living book. I'm not serving a religion.
I'm not serving circumstances. I'm not serving a practice. I
am serving a living, breathing Bible. I'm serving a living,
breathing God that can breathe into my life the breath of life. Otherwise, I'm dead. Says he breathed into his nostrils. the breath of life. Breathing is kind of important,
isn't it? We were joking around the other day, I was watching
some show and they had somebody that had died on the show and
somebody asked a question, I wonder what killed him? I said, not
breathing. You know, not breathing is the biggest killer that has
ever been. If you don't breathe, you don't
live. says that He breathed into man
the breath of life. He filled the nothing. Aren't you glad He don't leave
you empty? If you're one of His children, He'll breathe into
you. If you're here this morning and
God is moving in your direction, and He's convicting you of your
sin, and He's showing you your need for a Savior, what He's
desiring to do is breathe into your nostrils the breath of life. You won't get it any other way. The baptizing that we're doing
is a symbol of what happened. It doesn't do you any good. The
only thing you ever get if you're baptized and aren't saved is
good and wet and you'll go to hell wet. There first has to be some life
that's breathed into you. It's a symbol of what's happened
inwardly that we're expressing outwardly. It says, God formed man out of
the dust of the ground. He took man and He formed him
out of nothing and He filled that nothing with His breath. Before God moves in our nothing,
all we'll ever be able to have is nothing. But by the help of
God, He's given us a living book that will bring us into a place
of life. It will bring life into our deadness. That's the whole purpose in which
He came. So that we might have life. That's why He came. To seek and
to save that which was lost. You could translate that to say
He came to bring life to the dead. That's His desire this
morning. That's what He desires in your
life. If you're not saved here this
morning, He desires to fill your nothing. I'm sure glad that I have a God
that can fill nothing with His breath of life. It isn't about being baptized
It isn't about going through religious ceremonies. All those
will do is get you tired and still dead. It's about the glorious
blood of Christ that has power to bring life into death. But then you'll notice at the
last of this verse here in verse 7, not only did the Lord form
man out of the dust of the ground, he formed him out of nothing,
he filled his nothing, he breathed into his nostrils the breath
of life. Then you notice the last little
phrase here, and man became what? A living soul. Not only do you
see the forming of nothing, the filling of nothing, but you'll
see the fullness of nothing. Not only did He fill the nothing,
but He fulfilled the nothing. I want you to understand something
this morning if you don't understand anything else I've said. When God breathed into man the
breath of life, it says He became a living soul. Understand you're
going to live forever. All this body may wear out and
you may end up in a graveyard somewhere, but rest assured your
soul is eternal. When he breathed that breath
of life into your soul, it became living for all eternity. And
there are two destinations for the soul. You'll either die with God here
on earth and live forever with Him in heaven, or your body will
die here on this earth without God and spend eternity condemned
and doomed to the lake of fire. That's what the Bible says. There
are no in-betweens. He says, I am the way, the truth,
and the life. No man cometh unto God, unto
the Father, but by me. Saying he fulfilled nothing. When man was laying there and
he was lifeless, God breathed into him the breath of life.
But more than that, he became a living soul. He fulfilled mankind. When man was designed, when man
was created, he was created as a perfect being in the Garden
of Eden. There was no sin. He was created
to be eternal with God. It was man's fault that he sinned. But he created man to be eternal. were the only things that he
ever created that are eternal. Nothing else in this world is
eternal. Your pocketbook's not eternal, your job's not eternal,
your health is not eternal, but your soul sure is. And when you
take your last breath down here, the next breath you take will
be on one side of eternity or the other. You'll either wake
up like the rich man looking over into heaven and crying,
I wish I had some mercy. Or you'll be like Lazarus and
carried into the bosom of the Father, comforted. What am I saying? I'm saying
we've got a God that moves in nothing. He said, Preacher, I
can't do nothing of myself. There's nothing good about me.
That's a good place to start with God. In fact, Lord willing, we'll
deal with it Lord willing next week. But he makes the statement,
he says, my strength is made perfect in what? In weakness. What he's saying is, he's not
bothered a bit by my nothing. They don't fret him one bit.
We get bothered when we're not able to complete stuff, when
we're not able to do stuff, when we're not as strong as we used
to be, when we're not as fit as we used to be, when our minds
aren't as sharp as they used to. We get kind of upset about
that sort of stuff, don't we? He doesn't bother God one bit.
Because he's the God of nothing. All I've got is nothing to offer
anyway. I can have nothing at 20, and when I'm 80, I'll still
have nothing. If I make it that long. He's what fulfills everything
about me. It's a God of heaven. that's brought life so that we're
able to celebrate today and baptize these two fellows. It's God that
brought that life. It's not anything we could do. Talking about a God that moves
in nothing. He desires your nothing today. You say, I'd rather hold on to
it. Well, as long as you're holding on to nothing, you guess what
you got. Nothing multiplied is still nothing. But if you'll give Him your life,
hand it over to Him, He'll breathe into you the breath of life.
And He'll make something out of you that you never could have
imagined. All because He is the God of
nothing. He is the God that can take absolutely nothing. Remember,
let's answer that question again. Who in here has felt like nothing
at some point? Let's be honest. He's a good God that can take
a whole lot of nothing and make a whole lot of something out
of it. Talking about God that moves
in nothing. The Lord God formed man out of
the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils. the breath
of life, and man became a living soul. Before we get saved, our soul
is dead. After we get saved, our soul
is no longer filled with death, but for life. I'm sure glad, I mentioned it
earlier, I'm sure glad that on that fall day 25 years ago, that
God breathed into my nostrils the breath of life. And I became
a living soul that day. Living forever in eternity in
heaven. I was a soul before, but I was
a dead soul. I was headed to hell. But that
day He brought into my life the breath of life. I don't have to fear what comes
because I'm eternally His. nor anyone can ever change that. Once you get it, you get it for
all eternity. I'm glad once I get saved, I'm
always saved. I don't have to try to do it
again tomorrow. There's a lot of religions that you have to
try to make it up again tomorrow. But I'm sure glad I've got a
God that when He did it once, it was good enough. We're here today To celebrate
God moving in nothing. And these that are getting baptized.
They're here today as an outward symbol of what has happened on
the inside. Between them and the Lord. And
I've been excited. I was telling somebody here a
month or so ago. It has been a joy to watch God
grow these fellas. Over the last year. It's just
been amazing to see how God has worked. It's almost like He's
done something with nothing. If you're looking for purpose
today, you'll only find it in the will of God. You can search for it everywhere
you can go. You can try to find it here and
there and over there. But the only place you'll ever
be fulfilled in your life is in the middle of the will of
God. And it's being filled by His power, by His presence. If you're not saved this morning,
God may be working in your heart. He may be telling you that it's
time. He's desiring to breathe in your
nostrils that breath of life. Don't wait. Tomorrow's not promised,
but you're here today. If He gives opportunity, We better
seek Him while He may be found. I'm sure glad on that cross He made a way for
life to enter into death. That's what He did. He died so
that I might have life. He died so that I might be filled
with His life. So that He could breathe into
me His breath. Oh, you got your breath, you're
not going to make it very far. One of these days it'll fail
you. Oh, but if you're filled with His breath this morning,
it'll never run out. You'll never get winded. You'll
never get out of breath. He's a good God and He's good
at what He does.
God moves in nothing.
