Genesis 23:1-20, 25:7-10
Introduction
- Genesis 12:1-3
- Abraham is old. Where are the promises?
- He owns none if the promised land
- He has only one son
- Who has been blessed through him?
- The first promise: "to a land that I will show you"
- 'Sarah died'
- Hebrews 11:15
- Abraham shows he believe the promises of God
- Abraham has to own the land where he buries Sarah. He believes that one day the land will be owned by his descendants
- Abraham pays for the field. He knows a gift of the cave isn't enough.
- The second promise is being fulfilled
- Abraham, Isaac, Rebecca, Leah and Jacob are all buried there
- The third promise - "in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed"
- God's plan is fulfilled through Abraham
- Hebrews 11:9-10
- Will you die happy?
- You will die
- You will die unfulfilled if desire is achievements in self
- You will only die happy if you trust in the Saviour who came through Abraham's line
- Hebrews 11:9-10, 13-16
- Abraham realised the promises of God were for him, but not about him.
- Nation and land were not important or where his hope was
- He trusted in the Saviour to come
