Jesus and the Way Things Work

102

The elements of the world refers to the way the world operates: a system of cause and effect, of hard truth, of manipulation of the physical and the consequences of it. In spiritual matters, it is the concrete means by which poor sinners try to please God in the only way they have learned from the way the world works.

God saves His people contrary to, and outside of, the way the world works, for He performs marvelous acts of grace towards all who call upon Him!

The Lord Jesus was subject to the way the world works in His humanity, yet He came to overthow it for the redemption of His people.

His conception was miraculous, by the power of the Holy Ghost, not the natural way the world works.

Every miracle He wrought - feedings, healings, calming the sea, raising the dead - were an overthrowing of the way the world works. He never tried to escape it for His own benefit, but kindly overcame it to help the poor and helpless.

He taught doctrine contrary to the way the world works - He is the living water, the Bread of Life, the Resurrection - and His Gospel could only be embraced by faith and not by works.

By all rights, Jesus should have been satisfied by the way the world works, because being without sin, He was not subject to death. But He intended to deliver poor sinners who are bound by sin and death.

Therefore, He interposed Himself into the cruel jaws of the operation of the way the world works in judging sin with death. He did this when He laid down His life for His people at Calvary!

By subjecting Himself to the way the world works in our place and under our sin laid on Him, He set us free from it! He broke the power of the way the world works!
