Psalm 136

Introduction

• The 'goodness' spectrum
• Good is bad, bad is good... the world's varied definitions
• Isaiah 5:20

1. "Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever" - Ps 136:1

• Job 11:7-9 - God's goodness and mercy are locked together

2. Great example of God's goodness through His greatest mercy

• Adam & Eve
• Matthew 5:43-45
• Ps 136 - the good things that happened in the history of the Israelites were because of God's mercy
  • God wasn't obliged to do these things, but He did because He is good
  • God wasn't obliged to show mercy to anyone, but He has and does

3. The US Declaration of Independence

• "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"
• Life and the good things in it are 'endowed' / clothed to us by God
