Faith that Overcomes

In the context of reminding us that true believers love God, obey His commandments, and love one another, John mentions three times in two verses that each one who has truly been born of God overcomes the world. What does that mean? In what sense are we overcoming the world? The text tells us that we who believe in the Person and work of our Lord Jesus are born of God and have overcome the world by our faith. It is not faith in ourselves, but in our Lord, so we are overcoming even though we may not always feel like it.
