Let's open our Bibles together
to the book of Romans, Romans chapter number two. Romans chapter two this morning,
and we'll start reading in verse number one. Romans chapter number two, verse
number one. Would you stay with me as we
read Romans chapter two, verse number one? The Bible says, Therefore
thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest.
For wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself. For
thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that
the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit
such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them
which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape
the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches
of his goodness, and forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing
that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? but after
thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath
against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment
of God. Father, I pray that you'd bless
the time and the word of God this morning. We thank you so much for what
Christ has done for us and I pray as he is exalted this morning
that you would draw all men to yourself. Lord, help us to be
thankful, help us to live towards and because of your goodness
to us. We pray these things in Jesus' name, amen. Amen, thank
you, you may be seated. Paul makes a case against the
ungodly in Romans chapter number one, and he declares why they
are under the judgment of God, and because of the wrath of God.
And he makes a very powerful case. He says, listen, the people
that are living an ungodly life do not recognize God's authority.
Chapter one, verse 20. For the invisible things of him
from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood
where the things are made, even as eternal power and Godhead,
so that they are without excuse. So he says from the outset, he
says, listen, God has revealed who He is to them. And they said,
no, we will not recognize your authority. We will not recognize
your glory. We will not thank you. We will
not glorify you. No, we will not do that. Not
only did they reject God's authority, they committed idolatry. In verse
number 23, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into
an image like an incorruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed
beasts, and creeping things. So they said, no, we're saying
no to God, but we'll make gods in our own image. They began
to worship the trees, and the moon, and the stars, and little
carvings of stone, carvings of wood, and pourings of gold. The Bible says that they rejected
God, they committed idolatry, and then they began to pervert
sex and marriage. In chapter one, verse 26, for
this cause, God gave them up unto vile affections, for even
their women did change the natural use unto that which is against
nature. Verse 27, likewise also the men, leaving the natural
use of the women, burned in their lust one toward another, men
with men, working in that which is unseemly. See, they've totally
perverted everything. They have rejected God and His
authority, they began to commit idolatry, and then they began
to pervert marriage and sex, and the whole society went downhill. Now, can I tell you that's exactly
where the United States is today? Absolutely, it's like reading
the newspaper, that's exactly where we are, that's the spiritual
condition that we are in. And I would like to remind you,
the Bible says, righteousness exalted the nation, but sin is
reproached to any people. There has never been a nation
on God's earth that rejected God, committed idolatry, perverted
sex and marriage, that God did not judge. Including Israel. America's no exception. He says,
because they do these things, that they are worthy of judgment.
Verse number 29, being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication,
wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, debate,
deceit, malignity, whispers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful,
proud, boasters, inventor of evil things, disobedient to parents,
without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection,
which means cruelty to kin, mothers will kill their babies, implacable,
unmerciful, Who knowing the judgment of God the day which commits
such things are worthy of death not only do the same but have
pleasure and them that do them He says there's no mistake why
God's wrath is present the people that look at the Old Testament
say well that he's just an angry God He's a petulant God. He's
just an unmerciful God don't understand that he's a holy God
that he's a righteous God and we have broken his commandments
and We have flaunted our sin and our perversion. And so God
says, I am going to judge. Now, I know this. I know that
when we preach Romans 1, it's very easy for us. When I think
about what's going on in our world today, I get upset. I get
angry. I do. I get angry at what's going
on today. But make no mistake that it's
very easy for us to point at the sins and disobedience of
others. I remember once my sister was
getting dressed down by my mom and dad, and I was telling her
all the things she did wrong. You did this, you did this, you
did this, and now I'm in the back. I'm the big brother. I'm
like, yeah, yeah, that's right. Get them. That's right. You tell
her. And then I remember my dad turning around and saying, and
you! Uh-oh. Chapter one is them. Chapter two is you. Look at this,
he says in verse number 20 of chapter one, for the invisible
things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,
being understood by the things that are made, even as eternal
power and Godhead, so that, who? They are without excuse, verse
21, because that when, who? They knew God. They glorified
Him not as God. Neither were thankful, but became
vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. It's they,
they, they, they. Well, chapter 2 changes. Verse
number 1, therefore thou, are inexcusable, O man, whosoever
thou art that judgest, from wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest
thyself, for thou that judgest doest the same things. It went
from them, they, to thou. And the King James is specific. There's people that say, I don't
like the they's and ye's and don't understand there's a reason
for them. It is not you. It's not ye. Those are plural. It is thou. So it's easy to point
to those that are without the church. It's easy to point to
those other people that are in church. But he says, no, no,
no. I'm talking to you individually. He's saying, you're going to
judge them, and God's going to judge them. But you're going
to judge them. He reminds us that God is going to judge us,
that every one of us is going to give an account of ourselves
to God. Every one of us will. And he
says, and you're judging them, but you need to look inside.
It's like Jesus said, it's very easy for us to see the moat in
somebody else's eye, but we have a beam in our own eye. And so
he says, you have a beam in your own eye that God is going to
judge you. And he talks about the judgment that man is going
to face. This judgment of God is based
on three primary things. The first is we're going to be
judged based upon his truth. Chapter 2, verses 2 through 4.
We're going to be judged in truth, verse 2. But we are sure that
the judgment of God is according to what? Truth. It's based upon
the truth of who he is, and it's based on the truth of who we
are. Let me say that again. It's based on the truth of who
he is, and based upon the truth of who we are. The truth of who
we are. Not who we pretend to be. It's
the truth about who we actually are. What we've actually said,
what we've actually thought, what we've actually done, the
truth. And it's easy like the Pharisees of old to fool other
people. But we're not going to fool God.
The truth. The truth of who he is and the
truth of who we are. So the judgment of God is based upon his truth.
The judgment of God is based upon his impartiality. Verse
number five. But after thy hardness, an independent
heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath
and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who shall render
to every man according to his deeds. All right, so the truth
of what we really have done. Look at verse number 11. For
there is no respecter of persons with God. I told you last week
that now he's pointing not just to the world and what they're
doing, now he's talking to the Roman who is moral. Seneca, one
of the political leaders, or one of the leaders of that day,
was a very moral man, calling out the immorality in society.
And many Christians said, well, see, he's moral. Listen. He's
talking to the religious right, the conservatives. He's talking to the religious
Jews that have now repopulated Rome. You're pretending like you're
okay because you're moral. You think you're okay because
you're a Jew. I read you last week what some of the Jews would
say during this day. Let me read it to you again.
Just two quotes this morning of what they would say. The Jews
would say this. They who are of the seed of Abraham,
according to the flesh, shall in any case, even if they be
sinners and unbelieving and disobedient towards God, shall share in the
eternal kingdom. They said, even though we're
sinners and disobedient to God, if you're a Jew, a seed of Abraham,
don't worry, you're in. And he says, no, God has no respecter
of persons. They would go on, get this quote. They said, Abraham sits beside
the gates of hell and does not permit any wicked Israelite to
go through. They believe that Abraham's there
going, oh, he's with me. Oh, he's with me. Oh, he's of
my seed. Nope, he's with me. And so no
Jew, no Israelite would be cast into hell because they were with
Abraham. And imagine, this is what they're
saying, imagine when Jesus tells the literal event, the actual
event in Luke chapter 16 about the rich man that died. It's
not a parable, folks. Rich man died, and he opened
his eyes, being in hell. This rich Jewish man opened his
eyes, and he's in hell. and saw Abraham afar off. He's saying, you Jews who think
that Abraham's there saying he's with me? No, no, no, he's afar
off, he's in paradise. There's only one person that
can say to you, he's with me, and that's Jesus Christ, that
will keep you out of hell. That's it, only him. Neither
is there salvation in any other, for there's one name under heaven
given among men whereby we must be saved. That name is not Abraham. That name is not the Pope's name.
That name is not even your name. That name is Jesus. Imagine their surprise when he
tells them the story. You think you're okay because you're Jewish.
No one's going to heaven because they're Jewish. No one's going
to heaven because they're a Baptist. Nobody's going to heaven because
they're a Catholic. Nobody's going to have them because they
voted the right way and they're conservative. No. None of those
things are going to get you to heaven. Peter said in Acts 10, verse
34, then Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive
that God is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that feareth
him and worketh righteousness is accepted with him. That God
is not judging on nationality. He's not judging on tradition.
He's not judging on what nation you're from. He's judging on
whether you are fearing him and whether you are righteous or
not. That's that judgment. Now, I told you there's three
things that he's gonna judge. He's gonna judge based upon his truth, based upon
his impartiality, and based upon, well, I'll tell you that one
next week. And this one's the important one, but we're not
there yet. And the reason that we're not there yet, the reason
I'm not covering that third one, although it's very important,
come back next Sunday, it's very important, is that I couldn't
get past a portion of this text. It just kept coming to my mind
over and over and over again. And it had to mean something
because in this last week, from last Sunday to Friday, I preached
13 times. And I had to be prepared to preach
three times here today. So I've spent a lot of time preparing
messages, but this verse kept coming over and over and over
and over again in my mind. And I'm like, Lord, I'm ready
to move on, but I can't move on. He said, Pastor, where are you
stuck at? I'm stuck at verse number four. Can we go back there
and look at that for a minute? Chapter number two, verse number
four. Or despises thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance
and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth
thee to repentance. Can't get over that phrase. Can't
get over this verse. He says, while you have your
morality You're making the mistake of
despising God's goodness. Now the word despise means to
think against, to de-esteem, to disdain, to have the lowest
opinion of. He says God's a good God. I'm gonna say that again because
you might not say amen to anything else I say today, but you probably
should throw your support behind this phrase. God's a good God. Psalm 119, verse 68, thou art
good and do us good, David says. Zechariah 9, verse 17, for how
great is his goodness and how great is his beauty. Isaiah says
in Isaiah 63 verse 7, I will mention the loving kindness of
the Lord and the praises of the Lord according to all that the
Lord hath bestowed on us and the great goodness towards the
house of Israel which he hath bestowed on them according to
his mercies and according to the multitude of his loving kindness. It's almost as if he says, wait
a minute, you're judging them and you do the same things. You
think you're okay and you're on your way to heaven, that you're
right with God and according to his truth and according to
who you really are, you're not right. According to the fact
that he's impartial, you're not right. And all the while, you're
talking about how good you are, you are despising, you're minimizing
You're belittling, you're even disdaining the goodness of our
God. Listen, let me sum it up. If you could be good enough to
go to heaven, then you don't need God's goodness. Right? So God showed you how
good he is, and you go, well, yeah, that's good. Well, wait
till you see how good I can be. I know that you have mercy and
grace. Yeah, I know, but let me help you out. You ever have your, I have no
idea, how many of you ladies cook? Where's the ladies that
cook? Okay, all right. Does your husband come in there
and help you? Maybe you have this one recipe and you're cooking
and the husband comes in there and goes, you know, you taste it.
Oh, you need a little bit of, you need a little bit of, a little
bit of garlic powder here. No, you're missing something,
honey. You need a little, you need a little, add a little. How's
that going to go? That's your last meal. You're
eating your last meal before you die. Last meal. Right? My wife is so good. Woo! I almost said the wrong word.
I almost said so bad. But she's so loving. She's so
kind. She makes a meal, and she serves
it. We pray, we pray, and I reach
for the salt. You know what I'm talking about?
What? What? Isn't it good enough? No,
I just, I just, I just, I just, I know, I use a lot of salt.
I, you know, I have clogged arteries and I need high blood pressure
to push the blood through. So I just, that's a good science
right there. So I just, I just, I know I, you cook with, you
cook for love. And my mom cooked with love.
And her love was shown by butter and salt. You cook for love. You want me
to live a long time. My mom cooked to make me happy. Can I go over to one of your
houses today to eat? I think I need somewhere to go for dinner. Here's my point. I'm digging myself a grave. Here's
my point. My point is that I have provided for you sustenance,
and you think you can add to it? That's the point. God said, I provided you salvation
with my only begotten Son, and you think you going to church
or giving money or going into some pool of water is gonna add
to what I've done? He ought to be offended. Hmm. Despise the goodness of the Lord.
I love the way he writes it in verse four. Despises thou the
riches the abundance of his goodness. And I believe that riches modifies
his goodness, his forbearance, and his longsuffering. That God
is overabundant in his goodness, his forbearance, and his longsuffering. What are they despising? Let
me just cut to the chase. What goodness are we referring
to that men despise? There's three things, very quickly,
but very important. Number one, I believe that men
despise God's goodness in creation. They despise God's goodness in
creation. The Bible says in Psalm 33, verse
five, he loveth righteousness and judgment. The earth is full
of the goodness of the Lord. The earth is full of the goodness
of the Lord. By the word of the Lord were
the heavens made, and all the hosts of them by the breath of
his mouth. He gathered the waters of the sea together as in heap. He layeth up the depth in the
storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord.
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. Because God's awesome. Amen. Dad would be happy. Listen, what
a good God we have. How do you know that God's a
good God? Look around. It's the same thing he says there
in Psalm 19, verse number one. The heavens declare the glory
of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork. Day unto day uttered
a speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There's no
speech nor language where their voice is not heard. It is God's
everyday witness of who he is. There's no boundaries of speech,
because every person in every part of the planet, I love it,
you go, have you traveled the world? The world is a beautiful
place. When when Charlotte and Ken were dating Charlotte came
over to visit spent about a week over to visit and the rule is
if you're not gonna stay in the same house and so Ken went to
live with the cops for a week and Charlotte came and lived
at our house for a week and I went downstairs one day and Charlotte's
out in the front porch and she's reading her Bible. I'm like check Drinking a cup of coffee check
I know she likes to hunt, so that was already a check. So
I went up there to say good morning. I said, oh, good morning, Charlotte.
How are you? She said, I'm doing good. I said, are you enjoying these
wonderful mountains here in the Shenandoah Valley? And she went,
yeah, they're OK. X. They're OK? This is the beauty
of God. Now, she's from Montana, OK?
So in fairness, Montana. But wherever you go, Wyoming, wherever
you go around the world, we have a great God. When you look at
something, wow, that is really good, that is really beautiful,
that speaks of God's goodness. When God created everything in
Genesis chapter one, he says it is good. It was good. It's all good. It's all good. Ah, it's okay. No, it's good. No, it's good and it shows that
our God is good. The God that can make the fish
of the sea is a good God. The God that makes the sun come
up every single day is a good God. Psalm 100, verse number
one, make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands. Serve
the Lord with gladness. Come before his presence with
singing. Why, verse number three, know ye that the Lord, he is
God. It is he that hath made us and not we ourselves. We are
his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates
with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Be thankful unto
him and bless his name. For he is good, and his mercy
is everlasting, and his truth endureth to all generations. And he brings up God's creation
in chapter one. They go, no, no, he's not good. No, he didn't
create us. No, no, he didn't. It's not that good. I heard one
guy criticizing the horse. You see, there's really no creator,
because if there was a creator God, then he would have made
the horse's feet this way, and he would have done this that
way. Have you ever seen a horse? You
ever see a horse run? And you go, wow. God says to Job, who put the
thunder in that horse's neck? God did. What a great God. No, he's not. A horse is a flimsy
animal. Really? We still judge things on horse
power. Everything that man makes, they're
comparing to one animal that God made. Why? Because he's a great God. His goodness declares His greatness.
But they said, no. No, we'll not glorify Him as
Creator. We'll not recognize His Godhead. We will not give
Him glory. And they despised God's goodness
that was shown to them in His creation. Number two, not only
God's goodness in creation, but God's goodness in provision.
God's goodness and provision. I wanna spend some time with
this because I think it's important. I'm gonna show you a couple verses
and I need you to stay with me. That God shows his goodness by
the way that he provides for us. Look at Matthew chapter five.
Matthew chapter five. Matthew chapter five and verse
number 43. Matthew chapter five and verse
number 43. Are you still with me? Matthew
5, verse number 43. Jesus said, you have heard that
it hath been said that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine
enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that
curse you, do good to them that hate you. That's a command, right? The Lord says, I want you to
do good to them even that hate you and pray for them that despitefully
use you. and persecute you, that ye may
be the children of your Father, because that's what your Father
does, which is in heaven. For He maketh, listen, He maketh
His Son to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on
the just and on the unjust. Listen, God's provision shows
His goodness. He says, listen, you need to
love your enemies. Love those that hate you. Bless those that
persecute you like your Heavenly Father does. What do you mean
your Heavenly Father does? Do you know there's people that
hate God? Romans chapter number one, there is no God, we hate
God, we'll live any way we want to, but God still lets the sun
come up for them? That God still pours down the
rain? It finally rained at the camp
Friday night. We haven't mowed there all summer.
We finally rained, and I was coming down, and one of the staff
members said, oh, we're playing in the middle of the game. It's
got to rain now. I said, you be quiet. We just stood there in the rain.
We did everything we did in the rain. It was wonderful. But you
know, you need rain for crops to grow. You need rain for drinking water.
You need sun for the crops to grow. And God chose His goodness
to every man. That means every plate of food
shows God that he's a good God. Is that right? Every oxygen molecule
that we inhale, God made that. When we inhale and exhale, that's
God. He provides for us every single day, whether we're just
or we're unjust, He's always good. Look at Acts chapter 14.
Acts 14. God's goodness in His provision
for us. Acts 14. Look at me. At verse number 15. Acts chapter
14, verse number 15. 14, 15. And saying, sirs, why do ye these
things? We also are men of like passions with you and preach
unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the
living God, which made heaven and earth and the sea and all
things that are therein, who in times past suffered all nations
to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless, he left not himself
without witness and that he did good. and gave us rain from heaven
and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness."
He said, wait a minute, you need to worship God. I mean, all the
nations that went astray, God still was good to you. God still
rained and gave you rain, and He gave you food, He gave you
a harvest. God's still good to you. Now
your response should be, you should repent because God's been
good to you. Look at Acts chapter number 17.
Acts 17, verse number 24. Acts 17, verse number 24. Paul says to the Athenians, verse
24, God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that
he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made
with hands. Neither is worship with men's
hands, as though he needeth anything, seeing he giveth to all, what? And what? And what? All things. He said, listen, His goodness
created you, verse 24. His goodness provides for you,
verse number 25. Well, what does God provide for
me? Well, that sentence you just said, you used breath that God
gave you. All things. All things? Yeah, all things.
Verse number 24, chapter 17, verse 24. He says again, God that made
the world, so His goodness and His creation. Verse 25, He does
worship with the man's hands as though He needeth anything,
saying, He giveth to all life. He provides all life. He provides
everyone breath. He provides everyone all things. So what does that mean? Look at verse 28. For in Him
we live. If you're alive, say amen. Amen.
And move. If you move, say amen. Amen.
Now, it might hurt because you're older. It might be... speak hard, and have our being.
As certain also of your poets have said, for we are also his
offspring. For as much then as we are the
offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is
like on a gold, or silver, or stone, or graven by art, or man's
device. And the times of this ignorance
God winked at, but now commandeth all men everywhere to what? Repent. God's goodness should
lead to repentance. God made a wonderful creation.
He's a good God. That's right. Repent of your
sin and turn to that creator. God has provided you every meal.
He's been good to you. Praise Him for that. When the
sun rises, when the rain falls, He's a good God. And it should
lead to our repentance. But you know what it does? It
doesn't often lead to repentance. It often leads to resistance.
This is what I see. This is what I see. Oh, you know
what? I'm OK with God. He provided for me. I got the
job. I'm good. You're making a big mistake here.
His goodness shouldn't make you resolved and continually disobeying
Him. His goodness should make you
want to repent and turn to Him. Oh, well, God's blessed America,
so we're all right, we're good, we're not gonna be judged, we're
all right. Look at how God's blessed us. His blessings should
not make us resist turning to Him. It should make us repent
to Him. There's one more provision of
His goodness, one more thing about His goodness I wanna say.
Do we have time for it? You guys got 10 minutes left?
All right, because it's only 10 to noon. We're all right.
We're OK. We're all right. I got to show you this to God. God's goodness is in creation. God's goodness is in his provision.
God's goodness is in his salvation. I love that song they sang, I
never heard that song before. The Bible says in John 15, 13,
great love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life
for his friends. I struggle with that verse all
the time. Can I tell you how I struggle
with that verse? I believe it. Listen, if I love
you, the greatest thing I can do for you, the greatest thing
I can give to you, the greatest provision I can show you is to
die to save your life. That's it. I could give you money.
I could give you, well, I can't give you money. But you can give
a person money. You can fix their car. But the greatest display of love
is being willing to give your life. Right? OK. Now, that verse directly
talks to Jesus, about Jesus. Right? But Jesus' death was a greater
sacrifice than any man's death. And Jesus died for us not while
we were his friends. We were not his friends when
he died for us. We were his enemies. We were children of the devil.
We were at enmity with God. We were unrighteous and disobedient. Let me show you, Romans chapter
five, and we'll be done. Romans five, not to get ahead of ourselves,
but I know it might take a little while for us to get to Romans
five. So Romans five, look at verse number six. Romans five,
verse number six. For when we were yet without
strength, that is unable. Would you say unable? Unable.
For when we were yet without strength, In due time, Christ
died for the ungodly. That's the unwilling. So when
I was unable, when I was unwilling, Christ died for me. Let me make it more personal. When you are unable to save yourself,
when you are unwilling to save yourself, Christ died for you. Verse number eight, what God
commendeth, showed, proved his love toward us, in that while
we were yet friends, what's that? What version do you have? You
don't know, Pastor, what version do you have? While we were yet
what? Sinners, Christ died for us. Much more than being now justified
by his blood, we should be saved from wrath through him. That's what he's trying to say.
God's goodness and salvation. You didn't earn it. You didn't
deserve it. You deserved God's condemnation. You deserved God's wrath. And
while you were in that state, Jesus died for you. And if we think we can save ourselves
and add something to it, We're despising His goodness. Despising it. The Bible says
that the Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count
slackness, but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that
any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. That's what He wants. So can
I ask you this? Have you seen God's goodness
in His creation? Have you seen God's goodness in His provision?
And have you seen God's goodness in salvation? Some of you have
never been saved. You've never recognized or admitted
the fact that you are a sinner, that you've rebelled against
God, and you are worthy of death. And while you're in that state,
Jesus Christ died for you, that he became sin for us who knew
no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Listen, you need to repent of your sin and turn to Christ.
God's gonna save you from your sin and He'll save you. Don't
let pride drag you into the lake of fire. For those of us that are saved,
how can we despise His goodness? When I mean despise it, I mean
there's no response. We expect the sinner, the immorals
to respond to God's goodness. What about us? Are we responding
to God's, are we, God's good. So why wouldn't we repent of
our unfaithfulness and say, God, you're a good God. I'm sorry.
I need to be more faithful. Lord, I've been disobedient in
a few areas, and I've been harboring some sin, but you've been so
good in your provision, and I'm going to repent of that, and
I'm going to ask you to confess. I'm going to confess my sin,
and I'm going to ask you to forgive me for my spiritual condition,
how poor it is. I have five children. I love
them to death. And while they were growing up
in my home, I was determined that they were going to do right.
Right? Is that OK to say? And it could be the easy way
or it could be the hard way. But it was going to happen. But there's no parent, there's
no father that wants to constantly chasten their children. No parent
wants their kids to do right just because they're scared of
the repercussions. We want our kids to get to the
point where they're thankful for their mother and father.
They're thankful for their provision. And they do what's right out
of love and appreciation. That's what our Heavenly Father
wants. He's been good to us. There's some areas in our life
that we need to repent of and say, Lord, I'm sorry. I need to be more
faithful. Lord, you're the keeper of my
time, my money. Lord, I don't know why I have
this anger issue and I need to get it right. Lord, I got a problem
with lust and you've been so good to me. Even though I've
walked astray, you're still providing for me. You're good and I'm sorry. No,
I'm sorry. Father God, I thank you so much
for the word of God. Thank you, Lord, for your goodness. Lord, we could talk about goodness
forever because you are such a good God. But Lord, you said
that that goodness and the richness of your goodness, your long suffering
should lead folks to repent. And it's easy for us to look
at other people and the sin that they're living in and and point our fingers
and they need to repent. But Lord, chapter two, you're
looking directly at us. Lord, I pray that through the
Holy Spirit and through your word that you would bring to our hearts
and our minds the areas of our life that we need to respond
to. Lord, may this altar be full
of people thanking you for your goodness and thanking you for
your provision and thanking you for your salvation. Lord, may
we bow our heads and our knees this morning and Lord, confess
some areas of our lives that aren't quite right with you.
And in light of your goodness and your provision, Lord, we
need to repent. Thank you for being so long-suffering to us,
being so patient and kind with us. And Lord, I pray that this
message would not fall on deaf ears. With every head bowed,
every eye closed, let me ask you this. If someone here this
morning would say, you know what, Pastor, I'm not even sure if
I'm saved. I think I may be, but I'm not sure that I've truly
been saved from my sin. I'd like to pray for you. If
you're not sure of your salvation, would you just slip your hand
up that I might pray for you right now? I'll not call you out, I'll not
embarrass you, but I'd like to pray for you. I'm just, I'm not
sure that heaven's my home, that Jesus is my Savior. Please pray
for me, anyone at all. Christian, this morning, may
you respond to God's goodness. This morning, may you come and
thank him for his goodness in your life. May that goodness
dust up some areas of your life that he's not pleased with. And
let's do business with him this morning. Would you stand on your
feet, every head bowed, every eye closed. I'm going to ask the
piano to play and let's thank the Lord for his goodness.
