Seeing is Believing?

24

If someone tells you of something they have seen or experience which appears to be incredible, you may believe them. But more often than not, you will say, 'I have to see it to believe it!" We want tangible proof which we can see with our own senses before trusting truth claims. Jesus is claiming to be the Messiah, the Prophet promised years ago to Moses. He has demonstrated through his teaching and miracles that He is indeed the Son of God, the Messiah. But the Jews wanted to see more in order to believe. Jesus needed to top Moses who provided food for 38 years for the entire nation. Jesus would top Moses by the greater sign-- rising from the dead. But even though the tomb is empty, the Jews still refused to believe. Seeing does not necessarily lead to believing. Jesus goes on to correct their faulty view of manna, and to declare that He is the BREAD OF LIFE-- the true bread that fills the void in peoples' hearts. As the Living Bread, Jesus gives eternal life, unending life. All that the Father gives Him, Jesus will not cast out. And because Jesus came to do the Father's will, He will lose none but raise every believer up on the last day. Our security of salvation does not depend upon us holding on to Jesus, but rather Jesus holding on to us. And He will never let us go. jesus' faithfulness in doing the Father's will is our guarantee of eternal life.
