We ask you to bless this place, Lord. We ask you to use it according to your will, Lord, and not glorify you in all that it does. We ask you, Lord, bless those who are here. There's so many sins that we commit, Lord, some that we do on purpose, and some that just slip up on us. Lord, we just ask you to forgive us and to help us do better, and help us to walk a better path, Lord. Help us to do the things that you would have us to do, and not the things that we want to do. Human nature just wants to do those things in the world. We know, Lord, that you can come in amongst us and change our hearts, Lord, and help us to do the things that you would have us to do. We ask again, Lord, to bless your word as it's presented to us. Help us, Lord, to be changed, that we might do better. Thank you again, Lord, for the blessings. Many things You do for us, Lord, and without Your help we would just be completely lost in this world, Lord. Many things that You help us do, Lord, and we just couldn't do it without You. Lord, we just praise You once again, Lord, and ask You to forgive us and use us wherever You will. In Christ's name we pray, amen. You have your Bibles, and I always say that. I expect you to bring your Bibles. It is a useful tool to be able to read along as we're reading the Word. If nothing else, just make sure I'm reading it right. There may be times when I'm reading and I stumble over a word and I say it wrong, but if you're following along, you can go ahead and check that and know that, well, he didn't mean that, he meant that. So it is a good practice to bring your Bible and to follow along. So I'm really just opening up my mouth to say, turn your Bibles to James chapter 5. James chapter 5, and we're picking up in verse 13. The penman, James, is going to ask a series of questions, and then he's going to give a series of answers. Question one, is there any among you afflicted? We can ask that this morning. Are there any among us who are afflicted? And that affliction doesn't just mean you've got cares of your body. That's often what we think about. Well, I'm struggling, I've got this ache, this pain, this major, minor, whatever, but body. It's more than just body. Afflictions can be undergoing any kind of hardship or turmoil, whether that's body, mind, soul, in and around your life. So are there any afflicted here this morning? You don't have to say it out loud, but kind of bob your heads. If we're being honest, it's all of us, right? We all have afflictions in our life. They look different for each of us, but there are areas that are bothering us, that struggle with us, that we have hardships. Okay? What is the answer? Question, is there any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Okay? Pray. There are many avenues, different options, doors that we could open and turn to in our afflictions, right? The world advertises a bunch of them, right? You got a problem? Well, we got a pill for that. Or we got a Las Vegas for that. Or just insert whatever. There are a hundred solutions for whatever problem you have. There's an app for that, that's right. What is the answer though? Pray. And when you're praying, who are you turning to instead of the world? You're turning to God. That's the real answer. In your hard times, you need to be turning to God. What's the other side of the coin? Is there any merry? Merry means cheerful. Now that word, particular Greek word, only appears three times. This one and in that story where Paul's on the little ship and it's about to go down and he tells the folks, y'all be of good cheer. God said, ain't none of us gonna die. Ship's gonna be lost, you should've listened to me, but have a bite to eat. It's gonna be a rough time, but be of good cheer. And this one, cheerful, all right? If you had just found out news that you're on a sinking ship but you're not gonna die, would you be happy? Yeah, right? Well, that's a relief. Cheerful. So when you're cheerful, what's it say? Let him sing psalms, sing. When you're singing psalms, this is not just 90s country, right? Where do you have those psalms? Even if you don't have a psalm book, and it's stored in your heart and in your head? But what are those psalms and songs and spiritual songs, what are they turning you to? God! Is that what we tend to do? We get the first one, right? Alright, I'm in trouble Lord, I'd like to talk. Can you go ahead and do your genie thing and get me out of the trouble in the exact way that I'd like it to happen, preferably yesterday? That's kind of our carnal reaction to praying. But what about when we're married, when we're happy, when we're cheerful, when things are going well? What do we tend to do? Ignore God, right? Well, I don't need you. I'm good. I got it covered. Rather, we need to be turning to Him at all times. And so when we're singing, we're singing songs of praise, adoration. Did you know that your God is worthy of being adored? Do you adore Him? Do you demonstrate that? We adore Him. We sing songs of praise and gratitude, right? Now we can be thankful at all times, good times and bad. And we should be thankful. But when we're going and we're singing, and the Lord is blessed, we need to be acknowledging that. Go back to Ephesians 5. And I'm sure y'all can guess what verse I'm thinking of. It's verse 19. Ephesians chapter 5. I'm jumping into the middle of a sentence, and I don't like to do that, so I'm going to pull back out in a second, but just listen to this one clause of this sentence. Speaking to yourselves. You're doing this to show off to other people. I'm so happy, I'm so grateful, I'm so gratitude, look at me, look at me. No, right? Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. So some of those can be literally the psalms within the word itself, right? It's good to pray those, good to sing those, whether you've got a tune or not. Sometimes I'll sit in my office and I'll just make up a terrible tune, but I'm kind of bebopping along through that psalm and it's helping me praise God while I'm doing it. Okay? But also we've got, you know, our hymns and other spiritual songs. I don't care if you sing contemporary music, as long as it's music that is honoring God and doesn't lead you down bad theology. We can talk about that. But we need to be discerning enough to know with what I'm singing along is truly glorifying to God, whether it lifts me up and edifies other people. That's fine. But what are we doing? We're singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. And what comes immediately after that? giving thanks, giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father, in whose name? In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Alright, so let's go back and get a couple sentences just to see where does this fall into play? Right? We're talking about living a godly lifestyle, bearing fruit of the Spirit, which In case you didn't realize, when you're born again, you're not immediately a fully grown apple tree with all this fruit just hanging off. Right? There's growth required. There's work required. There's discernment. There's exercise. It's like building up your muscles, right? You go try and lift 100,000 pounds, right? Is it going to happen? You may never get there with 100,000, but, right? If I go out there and try and lift 200, I'm going to be in the chiropractor. But if I were to progressively work up and work up and work up, I should, in theory, at least in that, get stronger, I still may hurt myself, but there's effort and training going into cultivating the habits in our lives that those fruits will be produced. So, that's what's going on in the context, and so in verse 15 it says, see then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise. So we're not walking like the world, redeeming the time because the days are evil. The world is evil. The culture around you is evil. Don't expect it to be the role model for you. Don't spout off their sayings, their mottos, their things. If there's not sound scripture to back it up, be careful. You can be getting off base just because it's said a lot doesn't mean it's true. But we should be redeeming the time, making good use of our time, because the days are evil. Wherefore, be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. That's the prayer. What's the will of the Lord? He's given you His revealed will. His will for you is your sanctification. You see that over in Thessalonians. Understanding with the will of the Lord. That's growth. That's discernment. That's growing in knowledge. That's growing in wisdom. It's growing in judgment. Does that take some effort on our part? Yeah. Now, the Lord is very free and gracious with giving out His wisdom, but you don't have to go to get it. You've got to go to Him. It's not everything else in this world. and be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but rather be filled with the Spirit." Right? When we're inebriating ourselves with the intoxicants of this world, whether that's drugs or alcohol or consuming mind-numbing television, apps, whatever you're doing that's just flooding yourself with Instead of being consumed with the Spirit, we're not on the right path. We're allowing the things of this world to distract us. It says we're in his excess. Now is there anything inherently wrong with having a glass of wine? I don't think so. Do I choose to? No, I choose not to because it's easier for me to set an example with a bright line standard. As a pastor, one of my requirements is I would not be given to it. Well, the easiest way I can demonstrate I'm not given to it is not at all. But it's the excess. I'm saying you can never watch TV. No, I'm not saying that. I mean, good luck finding something edifying to watch. But if you find something, you know, Megan and I were watching a show about being alone out in the woods and watching these jokers trying to survive. It was mildly entertaining. And trying to think about, OK, if I was in that scenario, what would I do? Odds are I'd probably get eaten by a bear. But it wasn't the garbage and the filth that a lot of it is. And so I'm not saying you can never watch TV, I'm not saying that at all. But I'm saying that we need to be very judicious and careful to moderate what we're doing. Because anything that becomes a large portion of our life, to where our time in His Word, in God's Word, and in prayer, and in His house, and investing in His people, when those all become secondary, we're out of whack. We should be pursuing the things of the Spirit first. That's what it means. We're seeking the Kingdom of God first. Is that hard to implement? Yeah! Is it worth it? Yeah. Be ye not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit. And this is in the same clause. Being filled with the Spirit. What's one way that looks like? Speaking to yourself in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Oh, that's one sentence. Wow, we're being filled with the Spirit. We're actively turning to God throughout our day as we're contemplating Him. We've got verses memorized that we're able to dwell on and think on, sing to ourself, praise God throughout it, giving thanks for all the great things that He's done. We were asked at camp, you know, raise your hand, who here has had five blessings from the Lord this morning? Y'all go ahead and do it. Who's had five blessings from the Lord this morning? I should see everybody's hands up, right? How about a hundred? How many of y'all have thanked God five different times today? How many of you have thanked Him a hundred times? We have a multitude of mercies and blessings that we take for granted. Do you have something to give thanks for? Yes, you do. If nothing else, if your life is completely falling apart and you can't get out of bed and rise anymore, you're in a coma, but you can still sit there and think about your Lord and Savior, you've got something to be grateful for. Okay. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of the Lord. That's about how we interact with each other. In humility, right? If we're going to be lifted up with pride, guess what? There's going to be strife. There's going to be conflict. There's going to be division. But if each of us are humble and on our knees, just like we have in our communion service or in the foot washing service, or humbling ourselves before the Lord. That's one of the ways that we're being filled with the Spirit. That's something that comes from the Spirit, that humility. Whereas the world says, don't you tread on me, right? It's a little snake flag. I will bite you, right? That's not the fruit of the Spirit. That's the things of this world. So if you're afflicted, turn to God and pray. If you're married, Turn to God. Sing praises of gratitude. Acknowledge and worship Him. And if you're anywhere in between on that spectrum, guess what you ought to do? Do both! Right? Turn to God. Okay? Giving thanks always and all things unto God. Alright, let's go back to James and see what the next verse says. James 5 and 14. Alright, so we have two questions. Annie Flicted, Annie Mary, got the answers, 14. Is Annie sick among you? Alright, now this word sick, we often look at it and think, okay, they're having physical issues. Is there more sickness than just physical issues? Absolutely. Literally, this word means feeble, weak. That can be your body, sure. That can be in your mind. That could be your faith. In fact, if you see over in Romans chapter 14 and verse 1, you'll see an example where that same word is used and translated, him that is weak in the faith, receive ye, but not to doubtful disputation. So there are some that you'll interact with, who want to join you, who don't have it all figured out. Are we shocked? Some whose theology is just not exactly perfect. Is it saying to cast them out? No. It's saying receive them. Is it saying to receive them so you can just pound them on the head? Have those arguments? You've got a lot of doubts, and I'm going to just, ooh. No. Part of that being humble and teaching and admonishing one another and gently is that, y'all, we're all kind of rough sand blocks here, blocks of wood. And we all need sanding. We all need refinement. Which do you think you would prefer, you being the block of wood? Would you like me to come at you with a chisel? Or would that like 500 grit sandpaper? Which is the lowest? Is it 100? Is that real refined? Thousand. All right. Which do you prefer, chisel or the thousand grit sandpaper? Right? Which is going to knock off things faster? Chisel. Which is going to hurt like all get out? Chisel, right? And so in everything that we're doing, we should be as gentle as possible, as loving as possible. Does this mean stop? By no means. It should continue. Because guess what? None of us are perfect. And we won't be until we're looking at Jesus. That's the day, that's the hope of righteousness that we're looking for, right? But until then, God's put us together in his church. It's the way he's designed it for our good. Our mutual individual good and our mutual collective good. Okay? So, question there, is there any sick among you? Are there any feeble? Are there any weak? Whether that's your body, or whether that's your mind, or whether that's your soul and your spirit and your faith. Y'all ever get feeble and weak at times? I sure do. You know what tends to happen to cause that? I feel like I'm the one carrying the burden. You know, Paul talks about the care of the church. Well, he may have been able to carry that right and know who was really toting the churches, but often I get that out of whack. I feel like the donkey with the pack mule, you know, whatever, just getting lower and lower and lower until his belly's kind of dragging the ground. Right? Well, that's the wrong illustration. I'm putting that on myself. I ain't carrying it. God's doing it all. Right? But I can put that on myself. And I can get very, very weak and tired and discouraged. So what does it say? If there are any sick among you, let him call for the elders of the church. And we use that title, elder, to refer to ordained pastors or bishops. But I think in context, I can also refer to the leaders within the church, The male, mature folks. What you're doing is you're calling in reinforcements. You're already afflicted. You should be praying individually, right? Well, here, you're calling in the help of the church, right? Letting those elders come, you know, those come from the church and let them pray over you. and literally anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up. And if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. All right. Let's talk about this weakness. Being weak. Is it wrong to admit that we're weak? No. Do sometimes we act like it is? Do you know what hinders us? Pride. Right. I want everybody else to know that, to think that I'm doing better than I actually am. Y'all do it, myself included. It requires vulnerability. and trust to be able to share with somebody, I'm struggling. I need help. And notice that it's the mature ones of the church that are being called upon to assist, right? The immature person may hear your problem and say, well, that's OK. You're doing the best you can. Buck up. It'll be great. Lord's going to fix it all, and kind of give some trivial, token-y kind of advice that basically says, don't worry about it. Either you're not that bad, or things aren't that bad, or something where it just kind of minimizes the situation and lets you know that, well, you can just keep rocking along. But what do we need to be doing? Not turning to the world, not turning to ourself, our own strength. We need to be turning to God individually, afflicted and cheerful, turning to God. And then as a group of there's one among us who's weak and discouraged. Let's all turn to God with him and pray with him and encourage him to continue seeking God. Right. Go to Second Corinthians. Chapter 12. You all are familiar. Paul relaying the thorn in his flesh. Scripture doesn't reveal what that particular affliction was, whether that was physical or whether that was mental or in his soul. We don't know. But he had something that was really bothering him. And he went to the Lord over and over and over again until the Lord gave him a clear answer. He's like, Lord, please take this away. And the clear answer was no. Y'all know the Lord's allowed to say no? Sometimes we act like He's not. No. Well, it says you're going to save me. He can deliver you, save you, make you safe. in a myriad of ways, multiple different ways. He's got a much bigger bag of options than you and I can even fathom. And he can see the whole way down, whereas we've got just this little bit of now. It's kind of like the difference between watching a whole movie. You've seen it. You know exactly how it ends, right? Versus you stop it. There's VHSs where you can just see like that one little frame. Or maybe even think about the old reel, the film. You're looking at one little film. That's where you and I are at. Looking at that kind of negative film, trying to understand what's going on, where God already knows the whole movie and knows how exactly he is going to work it out. That's the difference in our perspective. So who do we need to be turning to? Me? Do I got all the knowledge? Do I have all the answers? Do I have all the strength? No. I need to be turning to God, right? For Paul, I besought the Lord, I asked the Lord thrice that it might depart from me the thorn in the flesh. And Jesus comes to an answer. Notice the letters are in red here. This is Jesus coming and speaking to Paul and saying, My grace is sufficient for thee. Is. It doesn't say that my grace will be sufficient for you. One day you'll have enough grace. But now, right now, in this moment that you're under, in this affliction, in this hardship, my grace is enough for you now! What if your affliction gets bigger? So does the grace, right? My grace is sufficient for thee. My strength, Jesus Christ's strength, God's strength, is made perfect in weakness. It is demonstrated. It is complete by your weakness. Does that make sense? Who gets the glory when He's sustaining you through the hard times? And you recognize, Lord, I'm weak. Who gets that glory? He does! Because when you feel like you're getting it on your own, I'm handling it, I'm doing it. What are you doing? You're under the illusion that you got it. That it's you. Right? He gets a chance to show off his power, his might, his grandness, his gloriousness, his mercy. Right? Through your weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will glory in my infirmities. Now, did Paul enjoy that infirmity? If he did, he wouldn't have been asking God to take it away. But he can still glory in it. Why? That the power of Christ may rest upon me. So if the more you're going through, the more grace He's put upon you, His power is being put upon you, you can brag on God that I've got all this going on, but that just means God is putting more of His power on top of me, caring for me. And that word rest upon literally means to tabernacle, to tent, to dwell on, to encamp with, Does this make sense? Do we have to flee from our afflictions and just, God, just take them away? He could do that. But you know what often happens if you're like me? It would give me a reason to walk away. But when I'm going through it and I see my dependents, I just want to get closer to them. And where do I need to be? I need to be closer to them. Sometimes? All the time. all the time. Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong. Strong in himself, No! Strong in the power that Christ is resting upon him. So, necessities, that's when you don't have everything that you need. Infirmities, when you've got physical ailments, you've got bodily ailments, you've got spiritual ailments. Reproaches, when people don't like you, when they call you out because you're doing the wrong thing, or even if you're doing the right thing, if you're doing the right thing for Christ's sake, expect folks not to like you. in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake, in all those things, He can take pleasure in them. Because they're fun? No. But because He can see how God can use that for His individual benefit. That He gets to see how good and how big and how powerful His God is. Okay? If you go back to Psalm 27, that word tabernacle or rest upon, It shows up a concept in 27 and verse 5, I believe. For in the time of trouble, he shall hide me in his pavilion. In the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me. He shall set me up upon a rock. When do you realize that you need to be in the tabernacle of the Lord, when you need to be covered by his glory and by his grace in those times of trouble? That's when He's coming and resting upon you. He's hiding you in the secret of His tabernacle, of His tent. Hides me. He sets me up upon a rock, that which is stable. If I'm looking for a solution in anything else in this world, I'm open out in the wind. I'm exposed. I'm on shifting sand. I don't have any stability. I don't have anything I can draw on. And as long as I'm trying to do it by my own power, guess what? You're going to wear out. He's got an infinite amount. He doesn't get tired. He doesn't get frustrated, thank the Lord. If he got as frustrated as me, as I usually get frustrated with my children, I'd probably be a scorched mark right now. But that's not the God you serve. He's the one who loves you so much that every time He chastens you, it's because He loves you, and He does it with perfect precision. With just the amount that you need to get your attention. and to draw you back to Him. Alright? Let's go back to James. Any sick among you, any weak, any feeble? If you ever just weaken your faith, what can you do? You can call for the leaders in the church and let them pray over you, anointing Him with oil in the name of the Lord, because are they doing anything? No, it's all him. Sometimes we use that kind of catchphrase, prayer works. I hate that. If there's a massive accident out here, and we really need an ambulance, and I pull out my phone and I call 911, am I gonna walk around saying, phones work? Duh! Who are you really excited about? That the ambulance came and did something, right? So it's not the instrument that gets you there, it's God! You're going to God! He's given you this instrument. And yes, it works. There's always reception. That's great. But the important thing is that you've got access to God and that he hears you. Right? Right, boys? We had that in our memory verse, right? I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears. Does he have to deliver me in the exact way that I want him to? No. God's not limited. He's not a vending machine, right? One of the preachers using the example of, you know, he really hates oatmeal. And if his wife was telling him that he was going to have to have oatmeal every day, he'd be going out to the vending machine, and he'd be punching, you know, those particular buttons. He's like, well, sometimes we treat God like that, so I can get something different out of the vending machine. I take my prayer, my dollar bill of faith, and I put it in. I hit E7. I want those chocolate M&Ms or whatever. And what comes out? Oatmeal. The thing you didn't really want, but the thing that he wants you to have or that you need. He's not a vending machine. He's not limited. But in your prayers, when you're recognizing your weakness and you're humbling yourself and saying, this is the God that has the answers and that I am submitting to His will. And guess what? That prayer is good for you. We're told to pray. Brother Don often says, Lord, I don't know why I have to tell you this because you already know. We're not going to God to give him information. We're going to him because it's good for us to pray. He's told us to pray. In the act of prayer, we're humbling ourselves. We're acknowledging we're going to someone who's greater than us and who has answers. We're seeing the fact that I don't. And when we see our weakness, we get a better perspective on reality. Prayer. The elders are going to pray, right? They're anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And it says, and the prayer of faith shall save the sick. All right, well, the prayer of faith. Well, let's just finish up. The prayer of faith shall save the sick. To save it, that means to deliver, to protect, to heal, to preserve, to do well, to make whole. As we just said, does that come in the exact form that you're thinking of? Does it always come from the relief of the physical affliction? Is that what happened for Paul? No. And the sick there, prayer, faith shall save the sick. It'll deliver the sick. What's the sick? The sick literally means the one who's toiled, toiling, tired out, faint, sickened, wearied. You ever feel toiled out, wearied, faint? Prayer of faith will save the sick, deliver it. And the Lord shall raise him up, raise up to rouse, to waken from your obscurity or from your inactivity, from the ruin, lifting you up out of that. And if he hath committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Now this gives me the image of, in 2 Corinthians 4, of being about cast down, but not destroyed. There are going to be periods in our life, so I don't want you to think about this necessarily as physical ailments, so much as spiritual ailments. There are going to be times in your life when you're tired! When you're weak! When you're wore out! Maybe it's because there's sin in your life, unrepentant sin, and it's just bothered you, and it's carrying you down, and carrying you down, and carrying you down. And you know things aren't right, and you know that you're not close to God, and you want to be, and maybe you're praying out to Him, and you know, I need help with this! And you go and you ask for help. Not because they've got any help really to give, but they can help direct you to the One who does. Point you back to God. Point you to His power. Right? The prayer of faith will save the sick. The faith. There's an article in there. It's not just the prayer of faith. It's the prayer of the faith. These are believers. Believers in the Lord. Believers in Jesus Christ praying to the Father in the name of the Son. Saying, this is one of yours. Lord, help him. Help him here in this hour of his need. And the prayer of the faith shall save the sick. Now, again, that save may not be what you're looking for. It could be simply that the Lord gets you up out of that doldrum or out of that inactivity or whatever you're in, and you start putting that one foot in front of another again. It rouses you out of the stupor, out of whatever's, you know, morass that you've gotten yourself, you know, the Pilgrim's Progress. It's like the slaw of Despond, right? The swamp. The muck where you just get so down and you can't really move forward. Well, it's like the Lord's lifting you up. He's putting you on the edge so you can keep walking forward again. And reminding you that if you've committed sins, they shall be forgiven. Here's your secret. All of your sins have been forgiven. All of them have been paid for you, paid for already by Jesus on the cross. When He said it is finished, He meant it. He put them away. Do you sometimes forget that when you're wrapped up in one? Do you feel like, well, I just, I can't go to God now. I can't pray to Him. I can't go to church. I'm just not the way I need to be. Let me just take some space. Guess what? Space is not what you need. It's the exact opposite. You need to get closer to Him. And that way he can answer is reminding you that those sins that have been dragging you down, that you've been holding on to and feel like you can't get away from, he's paid for those too. They're not hindering you back. They're not hindering you from serving him today. Let them go. Does he provide an escape from every temptation that you go through? He does. Have you failed in the past? You better believe it. And so have I. Do those have to dictate how you serve him today? No. And so the saving may just be as simple as that. As that he reminds you how good he is and how good he's been to you by putting that away. and by what His Son did for you freely, not because you're worthy, not because you're good, not because you've got it. You can't clean yourself up enough to get right with God. Not on an eternal level and not on a weekly basis. In the bad times, in the good times, turn to God. When you're weak, turn to God. When you don't even feel strong enough to turn to Him on your own, gather some of your brothers and sisters and ask Him for help. Turn with Him. So it says this prayer of faith. What does that prayer of faith ask for? It says, We've got this physical need, and Lord, well, what we really want is you to do this, because it would make this situation a whole lot easier, or it would make us happy. Is that really what the prayer of faith is about? That's more like the vending machine. What has Jesus given in His model prayer when He's teaching His disciples? What's the theme of that? Lord, Thy will be done. But what do we often pray? Lord, My will be done now. How disrespectful. How dishonoring. If your kids were my size and they came up to declare what will be done for dinner, and it will be done now, and why haven't you gotten on that? And Lord, I'm really displeased that you've chosen to include broccoli in that meal. As a parent, that's a little frustrating. How often do we treat God like that in our prayers? Instead of father, I need help. I don't have the answers. I want to do what's right. I want to do your will. I want your will to be done in this situation, however that looks. And so, father, I don't have the answers. Give me your wisdom, not the wisdom of the world, not the solutions that I come up with on my own. Show me what you would like me to do. Show me in your word. Part of praying is just being available to have the Lord send those scriptures that you've been reading back into your head. I may not have read something for months, but when I'm struggling with something and grappling and trying to figure out what the Lord wants me to do, that's often what He'll do with me, is He'll start sending these scriptures through my head. Well, Bubba, did you consider this? No, I didn't. Did you consider this? No, I didn't. Did you consider this? Well, no, I hadn't really thought about that. I've been kind of stewing over the problem. rather than thinking about what you've already told me, what I already know and ought to do. So sometimes the prayer is just us quieting down enough and listening to what He's already told us. And the Holy Spirit can do that. But ultimately the prayer of faith is praying for, Lord, Thy will be done. Thy will, not mine. Lord, I want Your will to be done. In this immediate situation, yes. In this urgent time, yes. But also in my whole life. In my family's lives. Sometimes we get this kind of distorted version of, well, my goal with my family is I want them to be... Well, come here, I'll fill it in. I want my family to be happy. Come on. Let's be honest. That's kind of what the gold standard for the world is. I want my family to be happy. I want the Lord to reign in my family's lives at all times. And if they're under my house, I've got to model it and encourage it and make sure I'm designing our lives around the Lord. Jesus would say that in his model prayer. He'd also live it out in the garden. He'd ask for that cup to be taken away. But what did He ultimately say? Not My will, but Thine. It was the Father's will that He would sacrifice Himself on that cross. The Spirit was willing, but His flesh, that was going to be something awful to go through! And so He's asking, Lord, if there's any other way! But ultimately, knowing what He was going to go through, He still was obedient to the Father and submissive to the Father's will. He lived it out! It's not just talk. And we can't just be talk! What are some of the purposes of this prayer of faith? I'm not saying this is all of them, but looking over in John 14, I'm going to give you two. John 14 and verse 13. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do. And if you just stop there, you'd think, okay, I've got that vending machine. Genie God again. Whatsoever you'll ask, I'll do. But there's a comma that comes after it and it gives a reason. That the Father may be glorified in the Son. Every prayer that we ask should be to God's glory. This is why when I go to my closet and I pray for that F-150, and I pray for, you know, that fat 401K, and I pray for that vacation package that I'm off ten months out of the year. We read about this over in James 4, right? You ask a mist because you ask to consume it upon the lust of your flesh. Is God going to be glorified by all that? No. You're saying, oh, I'd like to serve self, carnal self, instead of, Lord, be glorified in my life. What in this situation should I do if I have a question? Or, Lord, I want you to be glorified. Help me. Help me. I'm acknowledging my weakness. That's good. It's harder to be proud when you acknowledge your weakness, right? I'm going to someone and acknowledging His power and strength and might and love and goodness. And I'm recognizing the purpose is for His glory. And it's a little bit different prayer, right? If your prayer is for His will and for His glory rather than for me. Or for someone I love. So will He answer that prayer that doesn't bring glory to the Father? I would say most times no. I would say sometimes in the short term He may give you that thing that you asked for and He's going to get His glory on the tail end when He's correcting you. Be wary of that. But over in John 16 you get another piece of this. This is how good your God is. John 16 Jesus is describing that he's about to go away for a little while and they won't see him. Ye now therefore have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. He was going to go on that cross, and he was going to die. His body was going to go in that grave, and the disciples were going to feel defeated. Their master had just been killed. We thought this was the one. This was the Christ. He told us he was. Here he is. Wait. What just happened? They killed him. They stopped him. And all of his enemies are like, yeah, we got him, right? He says it's going to reverse. Because he came out of that grave, and they have a joy of knowing that their savior, he's alive, and nobody can kill him, and he's not going to die again. And that's a joy that nobody can take away, right? That's your context. And in that day, ye shall ask me nothing. Okay? Up until this, they've been asking questions from Jesus directly. Right? He was their master. He was their teacher. He was there walking with them. He says, in that day, you're not going to ask me directly anymore. He says, verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you. So why do we pray, dear Heavenly Father? Because Jesus told us to. We go and we pray to the Father and we say, in Jesus' name, we're coming to you. in His name, says, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it you. Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. Okay? So, it's going to glorify God, and it will bring you joy. This is not the fleeting, ephemeral, Air quotes, joy of the world. That's what I would describe as the sugar high. You get that big bag of candy as a kid, and you got all those long pixie sticks, and you're just, right? And for about 45 minutes, you're just so excited and running around like crazy. And then what happens afterwards? You crash. You feel awful. You can't figure out why. You just feel so terrible, and you're so mean, and you're snarky, and you're biting, right? Have you ever experienced that, or been on the receiving end of seeing kids who just Gone nuts on candy? Well, sometimes when you overindulge in the things of this world, that's exactly what happens. You can have this kind of fleeting joy for a moment, but ultimately there's a hard, hard crash. And it's not good for you. It doesn't build you up in the long term. And so that's not the joy that's being described here. The joy of those things that your father will give you, that joy is real. It will glorify him, and it will bring you real joy. Again, this is not that joy of that F-150, the joy of the 401K, or the joy of having the awesome vacation. Those are all the lusts of the flesh. All the best of those things are sorry sloppy seconds compared to the inheritance that you're going to receive one day. But the best thing that you can have right now, right David, is Jesus himself. Jesus, go to Psalm 5. I want to talk about real joy. Real joy. Psalm 5, verse 11. But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice. Let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them. Let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. Where is your joy truly at? It's in God himself. It's in his presence. If you're trusting in him and you're loving him, you've got to count to joy. You've got something to joy in when you're trusting yourself, when you're counting on yourself to defend you. All right. No joy in that. But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice. That is actively joying. Let them shout for joy because thou defendest them. Who's who is your defender? God, right, the one who's actually got the power to do the defending. You can shout for joy. Is the world going to bother you at times? Yeah. But you know what you're like at that point when you're letting the world bother you? It's like when old Peter hopped out of the... Lord! If you're really the Lord, call me out there and I'll walk on the water. Come on. And he does. And he's walking for a minute. He's walking. Who's he focusing on? God. Right? He's focusing on the Lord. And then what happens? Oh, snap. There's like wind and waves and I could just be consumed at any point. Right? Who had control over those winds and waves? The Lord. Right? The whole time. He had it. He lost sight of the big picture of who was really in control. And every time the Lord would calm a storm, these people go like, whoa. They like kind of have a fresh recollection of, what kind of guy are we dealing with him that even the winds and the waves are subject to him? All right? Shout for joy. He's the one who's going to defend you. Loving his name. and be so joyful. The Lord, the presence of the Lord, that's where the joy comes from. See this again over in Psalm 16, verse 11. Thou wilt show me the path of life. That's asking, Lord, show me your will in my life, the path of righteousness. Show me that. In thy presence is the fullness of joy. fullness of joy. That means completely satisfied, not lacking. Why do you think eternal life means to be in God's presence? Because that's the real joy. At thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore. Who's seated at the right hand of God? Jesus. Anything else that you're seeking for pleasures to fill that void for joy, anything other than God is going to fall far short. Christ himself, we sing about it in these songs, he's the lily of the valley, the bright morning star, right? He's the fairest of 10,000 to my soul. But how often do we not mean that? Because I'm sure it's chasing something else, right? He's the fairest, but I don't act like it. He's kind of second-hand fiddle. He's kind of like that third cousin you'll maybe talk to once at the family reunion. But what I'm really interested in on a day-to-day basis is this over here. Until we turn and start seeking him and desiring him and loving him like we ought to, it's all going to ring hollow. Sometimes my most simple prayer is, Lord, I need you. Help me to love you more. That father who's asking, Lord help my unbelief. Help me that I don't love you enough. Convict me of that. Sometimes we act like it's not even a problem. Thy right hand are pleasures forevermore. Strong's for that evermore. That word that gives the definition. It says the bright object at a distance that's being traveled towards. The goal. Christ. He is that bright object. He's what we're traveling towards. He's where we want to get to. So let me get as close to Him as I can now. Go to Psalm 21 and 1. The king shall joy in his power of his armies, of his political influence, of his might, of his tax revenues. No. The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord, and in thy salvation, how greatly shall he rejoice. So even the king, the mightiest one who's got all this power and influence naturally, his joy has to be in the Lord. That's where it is. He's the one who's able to give the victory. He's able to give true salvation, both deliverance from the things that you're going through now, but ultimately, the salvation that it's going to be with Him. What a mighty deliverer we have. And we're not doing it on our own. Go over to Psalm 35. Psalm 35 verse 9. And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord. It shall rejoice in his salvation. The single best gift that you have been given in your life is not your spouse. It's not your mom and daddy. It's not your kids. It's not even the church. The single best gift that you've been given personally is that Father gave His Son for you, paid for every single one of your sins, and He's going to continue to preserve and protect you and defend you and bring you to where He is forever. You sum all that up in salvation, right? A saving, a saving from yourself, a saving from your sins, a saving from this world. You have something to be joyful in. So when you're weak, when you're tired, when you're low, And you need saving at that point. Where do you go? Where do you go? Do you go veg out on the 10 hours of Netflix so you don't have to think about it? Do you go to a bottle? Do you go to drugs? Do you go to somebody that you can just complain to and they'll say, yes, you're right? That's not the kind of friends we need. Go to the Lord. He knows the best path for you. And if you're constantly trying to tell Him the best path, you've got to work on that humility thing. He's got all the information. He's seen the whole movie, how He wants it to turn out. Go into Him. We often really just want the escape, right? Give me relief from this affliction. Give me relief from this trial. Give me an out, right? That trial may be for your good, because then you can see, one, you're weak. You are. I am. That you need God on a daily basis. That you can see how great His power and how great His grace is. And the harder time you're going for, it says His grace is sufficient. You're getting more grace! I can brag more on my God of how big He's lifting me up. Right? So when you're going and you're praying. Remember, you're not praying to give God information. He doesn't need your information. Right? But you're going to commune with your Father. It means to be in His presence. Where did we say joy was? In His presence. When do you draw the closest in this world to your Heavenly Father? When you're talking to Him. Right? If you're talking to your kids, you feel like you're interacting with them, you feel like you're a little closer to them when they're looking at you and they're talking to you versus when you haven't seen them in months, right? How do you draw closer to your Heavenly Father? He's not the one going back and forth, by the way. It's us. He's there and accessible. So His presence is joy. That's real joy. Go to His presence. Well, I'm bogged down. I just don't feel clean. I'm vile. Yes. But that's been paid for too. And it takes having brothers and sisters to encourage and remind us that. That I'm praying for you too. That I'm praying that the Lord will move in your life in the way that gets Him glory and brings you joy of Him! Joy in the Lord, not joy in anything else, right? I want to be joyful that I'm not hurting Him anymore. Well, is that the best? Sometimes we really think so, and we like to tell God that, but not necessarily. Often not necessarily. We want His presence. We want to pray as we're humbling ourselves. I mean, literally, if you don't pray on your knees very often, try it. I know sometimes our bodies don't allow that to be easily done, but there's something about just putting your body in that position of humility that helps the mind and the heart follow. Because you want to know my besetting sin? It's pride. It's thinking, oh, I got it. Sometimes I'm talking to the Lord as a peer rather than as a supplicant. I'm coming before the king. Now, do you have to pray any of this? No. I mean, the Bible has a bunch of different examples of how your physical body can be, whether that's laying out prostrate, where that can be praying, you know, with your hands in the air, lifted to the high, or that could be out walking in the woods. In that case, I'd advise you to keep your eyes open, because there are trees. Praying while you're driving. This is how we pray without ceasing. If we're communing with our God, it doesn't have to be a 45-minute long thing. Sometimes that's great. Sometimes it can just be those 15, 30 seconds of, Lord, I'm struggling with this right now. I don't know what to do. Lord, help take this thought out of my head. I know it's wrong. Lord, forgive me for it. Help me to love you more. I know that you are what I need, not this. And it's just reminders and reminders and reminders. So we're humbling ourself. And in that, we're acknowledging our weakness, right? We're acknowledging both our need, which is good, because too often we're like, I'm good. I got it. Leave me alone. Acknowledging our need and acknowledging that he's got the wisdom, the power, the ability to grant it, and that his will will be done in all of it, which again comes back to the humbling process. Remind yourself as you're praying of how good your God is, how much power he has, how much mercy he's shown you this day. Those are those praises and gratitudes, whether everything feels like it's going wrong, or things feel okay. Wherever you are on the spectrum, you've still got something to brag on God about, about how good He's been to you. And if nothing else, to remember your salvation. What a joy that you have. If you can keep that one aspect alive and fresh in your head at every moment, Imagine how much a better perspective and frame of mind you'd be ready to face any adversity. It's because you know the big picture. The rest is just little details. It's like the difference between you seeing the billion dollars on the check and then whether or not the little change adds up. It's supposed to be $0.35. Well, it's $0.32. You got the big one, do you really care? Do you? At that point, I'm like, you can keep the change, right? The change is all the troubles in your life. And the big number, that's your inheritance. That's your God. That's his love for you. That's his precious promises. Take the time. Be diligent about it. Not formulaic, not robotic, not legalistic. but go and commune with your God, and encourage others to go with you, and go to others with you. You know, which is the difference between, well, you're struggling, I'm gonna pray for you, and I'll walk away, versus, wow, you're struggling, I don't have an answer for you, I know who does, let's go to him right now. And your prayer may be the thing that shifts their perspective off of those little change things and back on to the big guy, the one who's got it. What a way to encourage and edify and strengthen.
