Test of a Father's Faith

76

Abraham is Paul's prime example of a man who lived by faith. He believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. But if one could chart the spiritual life of Abraham recorded in Genesis 12-25, his chart would resemble a EKG-- with peaks of walking in the Spirit and valleys of walking in the flesh! Throughout his journey God tested him to approve and improve his faith. The tests involved location, trusting God for protection and provision, and revolved around the promised son. Towards the end of his life, Abraham is ready for the ultimate test of his faith, for God asks Abraham to offer his only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice on Mount Moriah. The final exam question is not only contrary to common sense, but also to natural emotions or feelings. Abraham responded with obedient faith that was prompt, prepared, and premeditated. He views this as an opportunity to worship God, to see God provide, and to trust God to do the impossible. Abraham passed the test and was rewarded. God does not ask us to offer our children as a sacrifice to Him, but he wants us to present our bodies as 'living sacrifices' to do whatever, wherever, whenever, with whomever God chooses.
