Stir the pot in Christianity, you just bring up the word baptism and talk about baptism. Everybody's got a view on it, and everybody says that the Bible says, and the Bible does say some things, but if we don't have the Bible rightly divided out, We really can make it say whatever we want it to say. So context is everything and rightly dividing the word of truth is of utmost importance. So baptism, water baptism doesn't save anyone. But it is very important. And the Bible has a lot to say about baptism. So what I would like us to do first is I want to confuse you and then I want to sort out the confusion. Go to Ephesians chapter number 4. Ephesians 4. And you'll also need Hebrews 6. Ephesians 4. And Hebrews chapter number 6. Okay, in Hebrews chapter number 4, I'd like us all to read Ephesians 4 verse number 4. I'd like us to read verses 4 and 5 together. Okay, ready? There is one body and one spirit, even as you are called, in one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism. Let's read those last two words together. What does it say? One baptism. Okay. So the Bible tells us that there's one baptism. Is that what the text says? Okay. Now go to Hebrews chapter number six. Hebrews chapter number 6. And now let's read verse number 2. Hebrews 6 verse number 2. Alright, everybody there? Let's read verse 2 together. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Alright, so fill in the blank. What does verse 2 say? Of the doctrine of Well there's an S at the end of that word. That's plural. So now we're thoroughly confused because there must be an error in our Bible. Except there's not. Ephesians says one baptism. And the context of that has some meaning. What do all of us believers share together that makes us part of one body? We share that one baptism of the Spirit, of the Holy Spirit. So that's what that context is of. Now hold that thought because we are going to circle back to that one baptism that Ephesians 4 talks about at a later point in our study. But there are seven different baptisms that are spoken about in the Bible. Ephesians 4 is one of them. And we're going to do a deep dive into that baptism at a later point. But let's go back to Hebrews 6, because we see that it says, "...of the doctrine of baptisms." Because there are doctrines of baptisms. There's more than one baptism in the Bible. Now, would you like to know what they are? Yes, okay. I was hoping that you would say that. Go to 1 Corinthians 10. 1 Corinthians 10. We're going to look at one of them this morning, at least specifically. And this one that we're looking at this morning is not the one that we made mention of in Ephesians 4. 1 Corinthians chapter number 10, we are going to read together verses 1 through 4. 1 Corinthians chapter number 10, verses 1 through 4. Ready? Let's read together. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and did all eat the same spiritual meat, and did all drink the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ. So the first baptism that we're going to learn about in our study on baptisms is, well, what the text says. It's the baptism of who? Moses. Okay, look at the text so I know that you got it. Verse number 2. And we're all baptized unto who? Moses. So we're going to speak this morning about Moses' baptism. And what happened in Exodus chapter number 14? That's right. They walked through the parting of the Red Sea. That is what that is in reference to. So, do you think they swam across? No, they walked across. And God had to park that so that they could do it. Now I want to do a little, let's have Lily come on up, Wilder come on up, Melanie, Hannah, Josiah. And why don't you come on up as well. One, two, three, four, five. You can come on up too. And you can work right here. Wilder, why don't you go over right here in the middle. Hannah, you come on over here. And then Melanie, you're going to be over next to Hannah. And Lily, you're going to be right there. OK? You're going to be right here. OK? Now, what you're going to do, those quarters, everybody's got a syringe. And you're going to have a quarter. And what your job is to do is see how many water droplets you can fit on that quarter. OK? See? What is that? Well, parents, I don't want to have to redo the whole thing. Let me see this. Milana, you can start. You want to put your water droplets on. See how many you can get on there. Get it real full, but don't let it overflow. Matter of fact, try to get that as full as you can and make a judgment call as to when you need to stop so that it doesn't tumble over. Okay, count your water droplets. Now, you see how it's all staying on the quarter? Parents can come up and watch this if you want. Oh, sorry, son. Yours is already coming off of it? Okay, hold on a second. Hold on a second. I thought I had paper towels. Can you run? I got about 10 droplets. You got 10 on there? Yeah. All right, try to get it as full as you can without it overflowing. About 12. Maybe, Miss Chrissy, if you can clean up some of those droplets. And you guys, hold your syringe like this when you put it on. Hold it over it. Yours already overflowed. Well, Miss Chrissy will clean it up and you'll try again. Good. You're fully... Hold it higher guys. Don't hold it on it. Higher, Wilder. Yeah, there you go. Nice and easy. Get it right where it's about to Okay now you see you see Lily's and Hannah's You see how much water is on there now get you get I Scoot down like this, guys, and get your eyes right at the level there. And look at how high the water is from eye level. You see how high it is? That's the best example I can think of of what God did. It made a wall of water. It's standing up. You see that? Now, what happened to the Egyptians when they went in after the Israelites? Yeah, so put a few more droplets in and watch it back overflow. Boom. There goes those Egyptians. Okay, so what God did is He made the waters separate and stood up. And now watch, here it goes. Boom. There goes those Egyptians. Alright? Alright, good work. Why don't we clean up and then grab your spots. So, we're talking about the baptism of Moses. And they passed through the sea. As a matter of fact, we see in 1 Corinthians 10, in verse number 1 it tells how that all our fathers were under the cloud. Now what is a cloud made of? It's made of water. Like, let's see here. Like for example, for example, if I put water in this cup, right? And if I went like this, I hope it works. If I went like this, look. So all the children of Israel are right under the cloud. There's no water getting on them from the top. There's no water getting on them from either side. Now if we can do these simple little science experiments with water, How much more do you think the God that created the water can allow the water to separate where the children of Israel can go through safely? And when He's ready, all He has to do is just tap on that cloud, tap on that water, whatever He did, but they all perished. They were all destroyed. Who lived during the baptism of Moses? Who lived? Yes. The Israelites lived. Who perished? The Egyptians perished. The baptism of Moses is about death. And it's about life. Let's look at a few more things so we can understand this. Melanie was recently saved, and as a believer now, we're going to I schedule a believer's baptism. That's a water baptism. But this baptism of Moses, it's not for Melanie. It's not for you. It wasn't for me. It was for Moses. and the nation of Israel. That's why it's called Moses' baptism. So, there's no contradiction in the Bible when you see the doctrine of baptisms versus the one baptism in Ephesians 4. It's just understanding what they all are, who they were all for, and where they fit in the context of our Christian life. Go to Exodus 14, but keep your finger in 1 Corinthians 10. Exodus 14. I'd like you to read Exodus 14. I'd like you to read verses 15 and 16 together. Okay, yeah. Ready? And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward. But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry land through the midst of the sea. If you heard that command from God, and you were standing on the shorelines, would you believe it? They did. They did. I got another experiment. Another experiment. OK. So come on up here, same group. The same group. okay and there you need a q-tip walter that's for you lily you've got one now let me show you something you're going to show us something so put some water in there put some water in there i'm gonna put some water in here okay okay okay we got our water in there now milani You're going to take the pepper and you're going to shake the pepper all up in there. Go ahead and put it in there as much as you want. All right, good. Pass it on to Hannah. Hannah, you go ahead and load yours up with pepper. I need some pepper. Okay. Then you pass it on to Josiah. Okay? All right, now you got a Q-tip. You just put your Q-tip tip in that soap. Okay? Hold on to it now. You put yours in. We all do it together here. Put your Q-tip in there. Just the tip of the Q-tip. Okay, good. You did the pepper. You go ahead. All right, now ready? Now when I say right in the middle, I want you to touch your Q-tip right in the middle of that pepper water. Go ahead. Ready? Go. Oh, it didn't work. Oh, there it goes. What's happening? It's parting. Yeah. The soap, when it hits that, it parts all those pepper particles. Now that Q-tip is... Yeah, now it's starting to work. Oh, the soap we had at home worked better. Yeah. Isn't that pretty cool? Okay, nice job. Leave your Q-tips in the bowls there. Now, a Q-tip is far from Moses' staff, but if we can do this just by a simple little science experiment, how different elements are separated, do you think it's any problem for God, the one who created the elements, if he wanted to separate them, he can? It's not a problem for God. He's a God of miracles. Okay, have a seat. Nice job. So this literally happened, and Moses and the children of Israel pass through, and 1 Corinthians 10 tells us it's the baptism of who? Moses. The baptism of who? Moses. Very good. I'm making sure you're paying attention. Now, look at verse number 2 of 1 Corinthians 10. And it says, what's the third word? All. And we're all. So who does the all refer to? All of the children of who? Israel. Very good. Very good. And this baptism unto Moses. Now let me ask you a question. We'll get ahead of ourselves a little bit. Are Do you know many religions, the religion that I was brought up in was, as an infant baby, we were baptized, we were sprinkled, and they called that baptism. That's the religion that I was brought up in. And that baptism was to release us of what Roman Catholicism would call original sin. Now we know as believers, many of you have been saved for a good bit of time, even if you haven't been saved for a long time, you know Because if you truly are saved, you know that water can't save you. You were saved by the blood of Christ, the death of Christ, and by grace through faith. You know that. Do Bible believers baptize babies? No. No. 1 Corinthians 10-2 tells us they all pass through. All the children of Israel. You think there were some mamas there with their babies in their hands, walking through that Red Sea? You got one instant in the Bible where babies are being baptized. Which baptism is that? It's the baptism of Moses. has nothing to do with anybody's soul being saved. It had everything to do with those Israelites being saved from Egyptian bondage. God was preserving their life physically, and they passed through. Mamas are holding their babies, walking through. Daddies are gathering their families, and they're all passing through the sea, the Red Sea. So, if we were to break down the word baptism in some general forms, we could say that, we would rightly be able to say, that this baptism of Moses, and any baptism that we are going to look at, is all about, I want to try to phrase it where I don't give you the answer. What do you think it's about? Let me ask it that way. Proclamation of faith, right. That's right. You're going to go through a checkpoint at security at the airport, and what's TSA going to ask you for? Your ID. Baptism is about identification, identifying who you are. So when the children of Israel pass through, they are basically identifying with Moses. Moses is their leader. The children of Israel are now being led by Moses through the Red Sea. And all those children of Israel who received that baptism of Moses, they are all identifying with Moses. Now, when Melanie gets baptized, she is going to be identified with Moses, right? No, she's not going to be identified with Moses. She's not under the Mosaic law. As a matter of fact, they have the law when they're passing through the Red Sea, but who would any believer, who would Melanie, when she gets water baptized, who would she be identifying with? Christ. Okay? So, we can easily draw the distinction or draw the commonality that baptism is about identification. The context is, okay, who is the identification with? And the children of Israel were identifying with Moses. We as believers, when we get baptized in water, we are identifying with Christ. And we'll do a deeper dive on that when we get to it. Brother Will mentioned faith. Go to Hebrews 11. Go to Hebrews 11. Hebrews 11, and let's read verse Number 24. Hebrews 11, verse 24. Let's read that together. Ready? By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. So, we know Hebrews 11 is the by faith chapter. So, what does it say? The first two words in verse 24. What was Moses? By faith. By faith. By faith. By faith. Do you think that the Israelites and Moses needed to have faith to pass through the Red Sea? I think they would. I think they would have. Okay? I don't think that they were taking a break to do some science experiments to see if, well, this is all going to... They didn't question God. It was by faith. By faith. And verse 28, Okay, okay. Okay, so you're an Israelite. You're an Israelite, okay? Now all you kids, go stand by the door. Go stand by the doorway where it's open. Go stand by there. And then face this way, like kind of right under the clock, facing this way. You're an Israelite. Okay? You're in Exodus 14. You're in Israelite, and you're standing on the shoreline, and you're about to cross the Red Sea, and you're going to do that by faith. You're going to go through the water. And nobody had a cell phone to create a live stream so everybody on YouTube world could see this. But I'll tell you, that's one short that I think would have gone viral. They're going to cross through the Red Sea. Now, what did they have already done? What already happened by the time they get to the shoreline? What has already happened? Let me rephrase it. I'm going to give you the answer because sometimes I'm not good at wording questions. So let me give you the answer. I want the parents to go to Exodus, or no, stay in Hebrews 11 and go to verse 28. Hebrews 11, go to verse 28. And all us parents and grandparents, I'd like us to read verse 28. Hebrews 11, verse 28. Ready? He kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. You know what they did first? Oh, this is good. They had the blood applied. They exercised faith and the blood was applied. And by the time they got to the shoreline, then verse 29, by faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land. I'm telling you, before you come to the shorelines of being water baptized as a believer, you've got to be able to look back and know that you had the blood applied. By faith. They had the blood applied first. Nobody's going through water until they have come in contact with the blood. With the blood. Now you can walk through. And just to confirm this, we study the Bible Scripture with Scripture. Scripture with? Scripture. What is it, kids? Scripture with? Scripture. Right. How about Scripture with my opinion? How about Scripture with Mommy and Daddy's opinion? How about Scripture with your opinion? I mean, you're you. Why can't it be God and you? It's Scripture with what? Scripture. Scripture with Scripture, rightly divided. Alright, nice work. Have a seat. I think that, go to Exodus 12. Scripture with scripture. Exodus 12. Exodus 12. Where are, Exodus 12.1, let's read that verse together. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, Where were the Israelites? Right. Kids, where were they? Egypt. They're in Egypt. Now look at verse number 13. Let's read verse 13 together. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you. And the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land. God is going to destroy those who don't have the blood applied. So what did they do? They applied the blood. In order for them to apply the blood, what did their hearts and their minds and their will, what had to occur through their being before they would even apply the blood? Faith? Obedience? but i can obey but not be willing They had to have had a willingness to repent. They had to have a willingness to leave the world, to leave Egypt, and they had to have a willingness to turn. That willingness, that's repentance by the way. A willingness to turn from where you are toward the Lord Jesus Christ. So by the time we get to verse number 22, I think that's where it is. Yeah, let's read verse 22. in Exodus 12. Let's read it together. And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lentil and the two side posts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning, for the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians. And when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. They wanted to forsake Egypt. And they believed God. And they wanted, they believed God would save them. The picture is, if you and I are not willing to repent, we're going to be destroyed like every other sinner. But if we're willing to trust God and obey God and have a willingness to turn and repent, we can have the blood applied to our house, ourselves. And you know what happens when we die? Our body dies. We pass through death and it doesn't touch us. And you know what you got in the Red Sea? you have the Israelites that come up on the Red Sea. And you know what that water did? It destroyed every single Egyptian. But because they had the blood applied, all of them were going to step out into where death would occur. Here I am! And they're going to walk right through it. And death isn't going to touch them. Not one drop of water got on them. The ground was dry and they walked right through You know what they had their eyes on? The promised land. And you know where your eyes need to be? The promised land. Because when your body dies, all you're going to do is walk right through it. And you're going to be with the Lord. So there's a picture of the baptism of Moses. We don't need to go to the Red Sea to get Malani baptized. It was for Moses. But we can see these types, we can see these pictures, and we can fit it all together in its context. This is why Hebrews talks about the doctrines of baptism. I've got to show you something else. I've got to show you this. And you've got to get Isaiah 63. And you have to get 1 Corinthians 10. Stay in there. But you've got to see this. Because this is a beautiful picture of the baptism of Moses. So 1 Corinthians 10 and Isaiah chapter 63. I know 53 is where we go a lot on the Lord's Supper, but this is Isaiah 63. Isaiah 63. Okay, in Isaiah 63, Everybody there? If you're there, say Amen. Isaiah 63. I want us to read verses 10 and 11 together. Isaiah 63, let's start at verse 10. Ready? But they rebelled and vexed His Holy Spirit, Therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he that put his Holy Spirit within him? Who's the shepherd of the flock in Isaiah 63? That's the Lord. The shepherd of the flock in Isaiah 63 is who? It's a picture of the Lord. The shepherd of His flock. That's the Lord. And what does verse 12 say? Let's read it. That led them by the right hand of Moses with His glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make Himself an everlasting name." Look, Moses isn't leading the people. A better way to say it is, the Lord is leading Moses to lead the people. The shepherd of the flock is with them. Isaiah 63 says, in verse 12, that led them. Look at verse number 13. that led them through the deep. When you lead somebody, where are you? You're in front. The shepherd of the flock is leading them, and where is he? He's in front. Now go back to 1 Corinthians 10, because it's absolutely beautiful. Look at this. 1 Corinthians chapter number 10. Watch this, let's read verse four together. 1 Corinthians 10, verse four. And did all drink the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual rock, capital R, who's that, that followed them, and that rock was Christ. Well, if to lead is in front, to follow means what? to follow is behind. Isaiah 63 is a prophetic look. The Lord is out in front of them. 1 Corinthians 10 clears the matter and says the rock is following them. You know what happened to the children of Israel when they passed through the Red Sea? They had a beginning and an ending. They had an Alpha and an Omega, and they're going to pass through death, and God's going to see that they all get in. God's going to be right behind them, make sure that every single one of them gets in, and He's going to pass them right through death. And you know what He does for His own? If you have trusted Him, He is your Alpha and Omega. He will lead you through death, and He will follow you through death, because He will not lose any of His own. He won't lose you. The baptism of Moses is a beautiful picture of passing through death. And you can know for sure that you have eternal security. And it's not just because it's called eternal life. It's because you've got the rock, the shepherd of the flock, that will lead you and follow you. And he will make sure you get through death untouched. Baptism is important, but what is even more important isn't just taking a believer down to the local creek and immersing them in water and picturing the death, burial, and resurrection. All that is beautiful and great. But what is even better is understanding every baptism that occurs in the Bible Understanding how it rightly fits, and then when you get baptized, it makes it all the more beautiful. Because you have all the pictures and you have all the types. Now, is all of that necessary for someone to get baptized? Of course not. Of course not. If you've trusted Christ, and you've not been scripturally baptized, you want to get that thing settled. Because God, all through the book of Acts, all believers, all believers were water baptized. We'll get into another baptism next Sunday, and then we'll start piecing together a lot of this other stuff. We just don't have time to do a deep dive in everything in one lesson. So, that's it for this morning.
