All right, we're in Genesis 41
still, finishing up from the last time, which was, what, three
weeks ago maybe now? Last two Sundays we weren't in
Genesis. So I trust everybody's familiar
with Genesis enough to know where the story is and where we were.
I don't trust that you remember everything I've ever said. I
don't remember everything I've ever said. I have to consult
my own notes to remind myself. But we're in verse 33 of Genesis
41. And just before this incident
here where we're gonna get to read in 33 all the way through
44, Joseph was let out of prison. And he's beginning to come before
Pharaoh to, he was promoted by the butler that he was, if you
go back to, let's see what verse is it here. Verse 13 of the chapter,
the butler has given him some praise and it said, and it came
to pass as he interpreted to us, so it was. Me he restored
to mine office and him he hanged. So we talked about how the fact
that the butler was putting all the praise and the credit to
Joseph that Joseph was actually responsible, that he is some
kind of mystical man, magical man, and of course during this
time, Egypt, all the magicians and the prophets of that day
came before Pharaoh and couldn't help him. So, we get to verse
33, and here comes Joseph, and he's interpreting the dream,
and it says, now therefore let Pharaoh look unto a man, discreet
and wise, and set him over the land. Let Pharaoh do this, and
let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth
part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years. And
let them gather all the food of those good years that come,
and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep
food in the cities. And that food shall be for store
to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall
be in the land of Egypt, that the land perish not through the
famine. And the thing was good in the
eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants. And Pharaoh
said unto his servants, can we find such in one as this is,
a man in whom the spirit of God is? Notice, Pharaoh gives credit
to the spirit of God, unlike the butler. So we're reading
on. It says in verse 39, and Pharaoh
said unto Joseph, for as much as God hath showed thee all this,
there is none so discreet and wise as thou art. Thou shalt
be over my house, and according to thy word shall all my people
be ruled. Only in the throne will I be
greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph,
See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh
took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand,
and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain
about his neck. And he made him ride in the second
chariot which he had, and they cried before him, Bow the knee. And he made him ruler over all
the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph,
I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand
or foot in all the land of Egypt. And we'll just stop reading right
there. Now, Joseph was giving this advice, and I'm sure he
wasn't giving the advice to Pharaoh so that he could be the one who
was promoted. He says in the beginning verse, Verse 33, Now
therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise and set
him over the land of Egypt. I don't think that was a self-promoting
statement. You understand? I think that Joseph was just
doing what he was supposed to do. He had learned that all the
way through his 13 years of being in prison. That, you know, just
because he does something right doesn't mean he's going to get
out of jail. Just because he does... And, you know, it's a
great lesson to us. We're supposed to be faithful.
The Lord says a faithful man who can find. And so there are
many people that would like to get through the ranks and promote
themselves. Just a piece of advice, don't
do that. Be humble. The Lord tells us that if we're
humble, he can exalt us in due time, right? So we do our jobs,
we do what we're supposed to do, and we obey the Lord, and
the Lord will promote us in due time. I could go through a little
study on that right now. I'm thinking I should do that,
but I'm not going to. But there are plenty of verses
in the Bible that talk about not putting yourself before the
king, not going ahead and sitting in the upper rooms, because then
you might get demoted to the lower rooms and be ashamed. Just
let the Lord do the promoting and be faithful in what you do.
And I don't think he was self-promoting in this statement is the point.
But in the end, he would be Pharaoh's choice anyway. So all the way
up leading under that. Of course, God's working in Joseph's
life to save all the nations from the upcoming famine. Now,
we'll look at this in a second, but this picture here of the
seven years of famine is what we're looking towards as, and
Egypt itself is a type of the world, and that famine is we're
looking forward to the tribulation time. We're not looking forward
to it. You don't understand, it's in the forward. We're not looking
forward to it. We're looking for a marriage
supper. But that's what's coming in the future. And this pictures
it. Egypt pictures it. Egypt gets all the plagues later
for it. So he's being prepared for that
time. But God has chosen us in Jesus
Christ, just like he chose Joseph to be the savior of his people. God was working in Joseph's life
to save all the nations. and God had chosen Jesus Christ
before the foundation of the world. Look at Ephesians 1-4,
even though it's a reference on your paper, it's a great verse
in your Bible. And it's something to consider when people get all sideways
about why this and why that. And they don't understand the
ways of God, and frankly, I don't either. I would like to, I want
to, I try to. You come to Sunday school, I
hope, because of that. You want to know the ways of
God. You want to know more about God and how he does things. But
not everybody is going to know. And God's ways, pastor quoted
it the other night, God's ways are higher than our ways. His
thoughts are above our thoughts. He doesn't think like us. And
that's a revelation. We ought to really dwell on that
idea, that God is not a man. He's not like us. And one of
these days, the exciting part, is one of these days we'll be
like Him. And we will have, the Bible tells us right now in the
Word of God, we have the mind of Christ. And so it behooves
us as fallen, cursed men to be able to look into the Bible and
try to gain the mind of Christ. But then one of these days, according
to Peter, so an entrance will be ministered unto us. When we
get to heaven, we're going to end up getting the mind, the
full mind of Christ and being just like him. And we'll understand.
And I look forward to the day when I can look backwards on
my life, because when I look backwards on my life now, I look
in regret. Anybody with me on that one? I mean, do you have
any regrets? I look back in my life and I
see regret after regret after regret and sometimes you can
just, and I know I'm getting off topic here, but sometimes
you can just lay in bed at night and do that. Anybody do that? You look back
and you say, that mistake, that mistake, that mistake, that would
be different if I did this, if I did that. But you know what
the reality of it is, right? You can't do anything about it.
Now there is something you can do about it. You can redeem the
time. The Bible tells you that you
have the opportunity to redeem the time. And you can change
and you can turn from those things. But you can't necessarily go
back and change what happened. You can't change the consequences.
You can't change the results. But imagine if you had the mind
of Christ during those times, what that would be like. And
so I'm going to get back to what I was saying here. But Ephesians
chapter one in verse four, the Lord created man. But before
he ever created man, you know, the foreknowledge of God, he
saw what Adam was going to do. He saw what Eve was going to
do. He saw what Lucifer was going to do. He saw if he made man,
it would end up like this. And the question becomes, if
God knew that man was going to sin and have this curse placed
upon him, then why did he create man in the first place? Right?
And a lot of people, not knowing the ways of God and not knowing
the love of God, not knowing the grace of God, not knowing
the nature of God, question him. If there's a God, why does he
allow Adolf Hitler to exist and kill six million Jews? Six million
people. Can you imagine? Nazi Germany
killed many more. It was upwards of 13, 15 million
people they have killed. And just because they thought
they were superior. And if there's such a thing, then why do these
criminals run free in the society? Why the government does this?
Why are there evil people? Why is there famine over here?
You know, all the questions that we come up with. And we doubt
God. But we're asking all the wrong
questions because we don't know God. And the right question would
be, based on Ephesians 1-4, let's read it. According as he hath
chosen us in him before the foundations of the world, that we should
be holy and without blame before him in love. Having predestinated
us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according
to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of
his grace wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. Now that's opposite, what we
just read is opposite of the curse that is placed upon us.
We can be predestined to be to the praise of his glory and to
be without blame before him in love. And so that's the question. We shouldn't be saying, God,
if you knew we would sin, God, if you knew I'd be born in poverty,
God, if you knew that I'd be born, you know, cripple or premature,
like we're praying for this baby, or if you knew I was going to
be born with this handicap, or if you knew that I was going
to have these pains in my life, if you knew that I would be an
orphan, if you knew Well, that's the wrong question. Why don't
we put the blame where the blame is on the sin that brought that
about? That's the consequence of sin.
And why don't we put, why don't we turn to God for his mercy
so that we can be before him without blame in love, accepted
in the beloved and sitting together with him in heavenly places one
day. The question ought to be not why God did you start mankind? Why God did you, you know, we
look at our mom and dad. Sometimes we say, well, I didn't
ask to be born. I do what I want, mom and dad.
I'm just going to rebel all I want because I didn't choose this
life. I didn't choose you as my parents. I just got thrown
into this, and so I'm going to make my own will, my own choice.
Well, you're a rebel. You're blaming your parents for
something they never did. And you ought to be thankful,
you ought to flip that around and be thankful that you have
life and that you have a chance now getting back to God. You
have a chance to be in God's good graces. He, the Bible says
that for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten
son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish. but
have everlasting life. Right. And so here in Ephesians,
according as he has chosen us in him before the foundation
of the world, before I ever started this, I decided that I was going
to make a way of redemption. Yes, I'm going to let this play
out. And that's beyond my comprehension.
That's the part I don't understand right now. I look forward to
getting heaven to understand it. When I get to heaven, we
can watch the real, you know. Lord, show us what was in your
mind at this time. Why did you let Lucifer, why
did you just throw Lucifer into hell immediately as he was lifted
up with pride and tried to ascend? Why did you let him come down
and deceive Eve in the garden? Why did you, why did you, why
did you? And one of these days, I'll know all that. But in the
meantime, he'll say, Don, just shut up right now. I've given
you a way out. Would you take it? Do you want
it? Would you take it? OK, I'll take it. And that's
what I've said millions of times to people. I said, look, it's
not about religion to me. It's practical. I'm in a sin-cursed
world. I'm in a sin-cursed body. I don't
like my situation. I don't like this world the way
it is. But I'm not going to blame God for it. I'm going to accept
God's consequences on mankind and I'm included in that. I've
caused consequences. I've caused pain to the Lord
and I've caused pain in my own life. I can't blame him for my
choices, but he has given me before the foundations of the
world, he's chosen me. If I'll accept it, that's a blessing. So the question really ought
to be, why would God make man knowing it would cause the death
of his son? That's a better question. God,
how, why did you make me knowing that if you made me, you'd have
to sacrifice your son, Jesus Christ, and he'd have to hang
on that cross and become sin for me. And he'd have to bear
the shame and you'd have to be separated from each other, uh,
for me. Yeah. That will make you drop
to your knees and grovel like a little baby and say, forgive
me, I'm sorry, accept me, thank you, thank you, thank you. But
men run around in their pride and they look at God and they
blame God for everything, and if God this and God that, and
if the Bible is so hard to understand, and every excuse under the sun
to get rid of responsibility towards God. And really we're
forsaking our own mercies. That's a shame, but that's what
preaching can do. It can help us to be aware of
that kind of thing. Go back to Genesis, but go to chapter 50.
We've talked many times, and we'll do it today, that Joseph
is a type of Jesus Christ. Look at Genesis 50, verse 20. It says, but as for you, Joseph
is speaking to his brethren, but as for you, you thought evil
against me, but God meant it unto good to bring to pass as
it is this day to save much people alive. And so that's a similar
thing. People are blaming God for why
this and why that, and he says, and Joseph is telling his brethren
here, God bent it for good. to bring to pass as it is this
day to save much people alive. You know one day we're not going
to be sitting in this church building. We're going to be sitting
in heavenly places. We're going to be at a marriage
supper. We're going to be with Jesus Christ. We're all going
to be like Jesus Christ. We're all going to be looking
down at the sin-cursed world and looking and wondering how
we ever even made it through that sin-cursed world. And we're
going to be together and we're going to look around and say,
boy, he saved much people alive. I'm glad I was part of the much
people that were saved because of what he did for me. And that's
what Joseph took upon himself when he realized, look, it's
not about me. I'm in this world. I got kicked
out of my family. They sold me for slavery. They
didn't want me. Probably all his life he felt
like he was hated, he was rejected, that why did this and why did
that? But you know what he did? He stayed loyal to the Lord anyway.
And at the end of the day, he was able to say what he's, it's
astounding the things that Joseph said about his own life, that
he was willing to give it up for the sake of what God was
doing in him. And you know what? Our lives,
we say it all the time, our lives are just like a vapor anyway.
And so, it won't be long and this will be over, and we'll
look, and we'll look up from heaven back, as I said, and we'll
say, it was worth it all. Just like the song says, it was
worth it all. So, People often ask the question
about why you make man, but that's the unfair question. Verse 38,
Pharaoh recognized the Spirit of God in Joseph, which was quite
different than the butler's perspective. Now, we mentioned that before,
the butler was giving credit in verse 13 unto Joseph, that
he made this happen, he made that happen. And of course, we're
not going to go back into what we commented, how that people
choose where they go to church, choose who they listen to based
on the personality, based on the benefits of the of the place
and all. And we listed several things
that people choose ministries over instead of the things of
God. But Pharaoh at least had enough wisdom to look at Joseph
and give credit to the spirit of God, capital S. And he realized
that there was something that God was working in the life of
Jesus. Now, in the same way, God did
the same thing for Jesus in John three thirty four. I don't have
the quote. I have a quote here, but I don't have the actual quote
or the verse. The spirit of God was upon Jesus
without measure, it says in John three thirty four. And so when
Jesus was here, it should have been more obvious to the world.
But even though the You have a difference between the butler's
perspective and Pharaoh's perspective as he looked at what Joseph said.
And the world does the same thing. We can be in church and we can
be looking at the Word of God and we can say, boy, how could
anybody not see that? How could anybody not know that
that is of God? And you know, hopefully, if you're
saved this morning, That's part of why you got saved, because
the Spirit of God bore witness with you that that was true.
I've often referenced Mrs. Angusath, her story. We were
driving to church one day, and we don't live far from one another,
at least they're on the way past my house. Whatever reason, I
think they picked me up, or no, I was giving them a ride. She
was in the back seat, and I was talking to her, and she said,
John, I've been to like 40 different churches in my lifetime. I'm
like, 40? How old are you? No, I didn't say that. But she
said, you know, if you're going to spend any amount of time.
And she goes, and I've determined that all those were wrong. And I said, well, wait a minute,
wait a minute. I can appreciate that. But now you go to our church
and you like our church. Yeah, I love our church. This
is great. That's where the truth is. And I've said, well, OK,
why do you think that? You spent time in all those other
places and you determined the truth wasn't there. But how is
it that you've come to our church? You must have thought the truth
was there or you wouldn't have been there in the first place, right? Those
other places. But now how is it that you decided that you're
here and that the truth is here? And her answer was simply what
I just said, because the spirit of God bears witness in my heart
that it's true. You know, that's what the Bible
says. And so again, Pharaoh was able to recognize that. You and
I should be able to recognize that. When was it that we, well,
recently, a lot of things are jumbled in my mind right now,
but we spoke recently about, maybe it was last week, about
doctrine. That's what it was. And, you know, the Bible talks
about not being carried about by every wind of doctrine. And
we ought to be steadfast in the idea that, well, where can then
I find truth? You know, where is it that I
can finally settle on some truth? Well, you know, you really do
need the Spirit of God to help determine that. And if you're
not walking with the Lord and you're not right with the Lord,
you're never going to get that settled in your mind. And you're always
going to be wondering this or wondering that, or going this
direction or that direction. But anyway, moving forward, Pharaoh
recognized that about Joseph, which was a good thing. Pharaoh
gave Joseph rule over his house, making him co-equal, but states
this, only in the throne will I be greater than thou. Now that's
a great picture. And you know, the types flip
flop a lot with Pharaoh in Egypt. Egypt's type of the world, Pharaoh's
the type of the Antichrist, but at certain times, Pharaoh's the
type of God the Father. Because of the statement, only
in the throne will I be greater than thou, and that's a picture
of the Trinity. God is, only God is greater than Jesus Christ
when he's on the throne. Doesn't the Bible say that Jesus
sits on the right hand of the Father? Right? But don't we know
that if you have seen me, you have seen the Father? Don't you
know that I and my Father are one? And go back to Philippians
chapter 2 and verse 6. We looked at it last week. It's
a super, I mean, it's a very important doctrine in your Bible,
and we showed you why last week. So we won't teach it again, but
I'll read it to you again. Philippians 2, 6. Pharaoh says
that we'll be co-equal, but only in the throne will I be greater
than now. And in Philippians 2, 6, Jesus says in verse 5,
let this mind be in you, which is also in Christ Jesus, who
being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with
God. but made himself of no reputation
and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the
likeness of men. Now, again, that goes beyond
our comprehension because Paul tells us that it's a mystery
of godliness, that God was manifest in the flesh. So the point I'm
making is That it's just a great type of Jesus Christ and God
the Father. That there is a hierarchy, if you will, and I always think
of it like this, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy
Spirit. They're equal in everything, they're all the Lord. They're
all God. Okay, but they have an authority.
Jesus has submitted himself to the Father. And the father is
over. So not to get into a thing on
the Trinity this morning, but other Bibles pervert Philippians
2, 6, which we dealt with last week and said that who thought
I forget the quote is now, but that Jesus thought it was not
a thing to be grasped, that he was not God in the flesh, that
he had to get that when the spirit came into him in false. doctrine
is going rampant through the charismatic community and the
evangelical community that you need the anointing of the Spirit,
and you need to be able to do what the Spirit can do, just like
Jesus. Because you are just a little God, and that's Mormonism, just
like Jesus was just a little God. And so we don't want to
have that approach. We want to know, just like in
this story, Pharaoh and Joseph, that they're equal. So Jesus
thought it not robbery to be equal with God and was given
all power in heaven and in earth. Matthew 28, 18 says that. But
when the end cometh, he will be subject to the father. Now,
I would love to have jumped into this. I meant to jump into this,
but we got into this the following week when we talked about the
church of God being the body of Christ. But first Corinthians
15, 24, we won't spend time on it, but that's the passage that
tells you that. when God has put all things under him, that
Jesus himself will submit himself to the Father and come back into,
and I can't wait for this to happen. It's gonna be quite a
sight to see, it's gonna be quite a thing to be a part of, but
you're gonna be, you are actually in the body of Christ, so you
are already part of the Trinity. You are already part of God.
There is no other dispensation of time where people could get
redeemed and be entered into the Godhead. But that is literally
what has happened to you. Now that doesn't make you any
more special while you're here on this earth, but that's gonna
make you a trophy of His grace according to Ephesians chapter
2, one day in eternity, and you're gonna be on display for all principalities
and powers to look at you. And so that's what 1 Corinthians
15 talks about. Now moving on in the chapter,
back to chapter 41 in verse 45. And we'll read right through
the end. And Pharaoh called Joseph's name, and I can't pronounce it,
but I'll try, Zathnathpeneiah. And he gave him to wife Asenath,
the daughter of Potipharah, priest of An. And Joseph went out over
all the land of Egypt. And Joseph was 30 years old when
he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out
from the presence of Pharaoh and went throughout all the land
of Egypt. And in the seven plenteous years, the earth brought forth
by handfuls. And he gathered up all the food
of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid
up the food in the cities. The food of the field, which
is round about every city, laid he up in the same. And Joseph
gathered corn as the sand of the sea very much, until he left
numbering, for it was without number." Notice, by the way,
that the Bible just defined itself in verse 49 about the sand of
the sea. And Joseph gathered corn as the
sand of the sea very much. So the Lord is telling you, you
know, you could never count all the sands of the sea. It's very
much. That's all you need to know. Verse 50, And unto Joseph
were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath,
the daughter of Potipharah, a priest of Anbar, unto him. And Joseph
called the name of the firstborn Manasseh. For God said, For God
said he hath made me forget all my toil. What a blessing. You
know, God can do that for you. He can do little things in your
life and it's like, it's, I don't want to say it this way, but
I will. It's like magic. all of your troubles just go down
the drain based on this one blessing that God can give. And God can
do that anytime He wants, and I wait for those sort of things.
And I pray for those sort of things. Lord, help me. You know,
Pastor Noe, as he got older, I really began to appreciate
the fact that he was getting up close to 80 years old, and
he was still pastoring. He would just come up to the
pulpit, and rather than just pray some long, pretty prayer, he
would just say, Lord, help us. Amen. And you know what? That's really all you need. You
just need God's help. And you know, sometimes this
life gets to the point where, and God says, he promised, and
I always remind him of this, you promised me you'd never bring
me into temptation more than I can bear. But I'm telling you,
God, I cannot bear this. And then along the way, he'll
just give you a little blessing, and it's just like this. Then
we're born unto Joseph, two sons, verse 50, and verse 51, It says,
for God said he hath made me forget all my toil and all my
father's house, even his past. All of his brethren that he longs
for, that we'll see in a minute, that he actually still cares
for and loves very deeply, but just having his own son, starting
his own family, God gave him a blessing. All my father's house.
From a pot of pharaoh, the priest of An, his daughter, Now, I won't
get into that, but I mean, she was an unsaved, what we would
call an unsaved woman. There's no such thing as salvation
by grace through faith back then anyways, but she came from a
pretty bad background. But even through that, God gave
him this blessing. In the name of the second he
called Ephraim, for God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land
of my affliction. Verse 53, and the seven years
of plenteousness that was in the land of Egypt were ended.
And the seven years of dearth began to come, according to Joseph.
As Joseph had said, and the dearth was in all the lands, but in
the land of Egypt there was bread. And when all the land of Egypt
was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh
said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph, what he saith
to you, do. Does that sound familiar? John
2.25, you've got a quote from Mary. and they want him to make
water to wine, right? And she says, whatever he says,
you do. It's just another type of Jesus Christ. Verse 56, and
the famine was all over the face of the earth, and Joseph opened
up all the storehouses and sold them to the Egyptians. And the
famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt, and all the countries
came into Egypt to Joseph to buy corn, because the famine
was so sore in all the lands. So he was given this name, I'll
just go back to the name he was given, Zathnathpeneia. I don't know how to get this
stuff, so I have to read and tell me what other men say it
means, but they say it means savior of the world and revealer
of secrets. There may be one or two other
things that come out of that, but that's about the gist of
it. And of course, both of those meanings apply to Jesus. Right? So, again, another type of Jesus.
Joseph is now 30 years old. It tells us that in the chapter.
He's now 30 years old. And Jesus was 30 years old when
he started his public ministry. Joseph gets a Gentile bride in
verse 50. And so does Jesus. You know, you say, well, it's
not right to marry an unsaved woman. No, it's not, but he was
under Pharaoh and he had to do what Pharaoh said, right? And
no doubt he converted his wife. I mean, I trust he converted
his wife. If he didn't, she was pretty unhappy. But nonetheless, that's what Jesus gets. He gets
the pick from us, right? Unsaved Gentile dogs that are
again before the foundation of the world for God so loved you
that he was willing to give himself for that. And Joseph is just
a picture of that. And so, uh, verse 54 and 55 record
the beginning of a seven year famine. And I said, slash tribulation.
It's a type of the tribulation time to come. No one could get
bread until they came to Egypt. While I'm saying this, go over
to Revelation 13. No one could get bread unless they came into
Egypt, right? And according to verse 57, that was the case,
and Joseph was... I'm sorry, all the countries
relied on Egypt. Revelation chapter 13, That's what's going to happen
here in the near future. Revelation 13, verse 14, it says
and deceive with them that dwell on the earth by means of those
miracles, which he had power to do in the sight of the beast,
saying to them that dwell on the earth. That they should make
an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword and
did live, for he had power to give life under the image of
the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and
cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast
should be killed. And he caused all. Same situation as going
on here in the book of Genesis. All the world was in a famine,
and the only place that you could get it was the Antichrist, Pharaoh. And he caused, in verse 16, he
caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,
to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads, and
that no man might buy or sell, save he had the mark, or the
name of the beast, or the number of his name. That's what's coming
down the pike. I'm not going to get into all
that either this morning, but it's the same picture of what's
going on here, and what's going to happen is Jacob is going to
be looking around in a few minutes, and we're going to see, why do
you look at each other? What are you looking at each other
for? We're out of food. And he's going to send them in
there, and they're going to be coming before, basically, the
Antichrist. Now, they're coming before Joseph.
But it's a picture of Israel coming before the Antichrist
and having to make a choice of what they're going to do. Are
they going to choose that Messiah or the true Messiah? When Jesus
Christ was, you know, the Bible says that one day they're going
to look upon him whom they have pierced, right? And they're either
going to submit during the tribulation time, you are going to have to
confess the name of Jesus Christ. It's not going to be enough to
not take the mark. I can point you to many people that I know
who are conservatives who would refuse to take a mark just to
refuse to take a mark. But that doesn't mean that they
necessarily believe at why they're doing it in Jesus Christ. And
so one of these days, Israel is going to be faced with the
decision, the Jews are going to be faced with, are you going
to finally accept either that Messiah who sits in your temple
and calls himself God or that Messiah that you crucified 2,000
years ago? And those are the ones who are
going to be saved. So getting back to this, Joseph was chosen
to be the one to supply the bread to the people. just like Jesus
Christ. He said, I am the bread of life.
Isn't it interesting that he says that about himself? I'm
the bread of life. And Joseph was that type. So
getting into chapter 42 now, verses one through three, or
43. No, 42, I'm sorry. Verses one through three. Now,
when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto
his sons, why do you look one upon another? And he said, Behold,
I have heard that there is corn in Egypt. Get you down thither,
and buy for us from fence, that ye may live and not die. And
Joseph's ten brethren went to buy corn in Egypt. Now, just
to look ahead in verse four, but Benjamin, Joseph's brother,
Jacob sent not with his brother. So the ten went back. And there's something that I
won't get into this morning, but there will be a remnant, only a remnant
of the Israelites. that we'll get back. And this
whole idea, and maybe next week, I don't know, I didn't really
think I wanted to get into it this week, maybe I won't get into
it all, but there is an idea that when Abraham gave a tenth
of all that he had, remember back when Melchizedek showed
up and Abraham was the first one who tithed, is a tenth. And
so here you've got ten brothers going in, and one of them, ultimately,
we'll get into it this week and maybe next, ultimately one of
the brothers, I think it was Simeon, gets left behind. One
of the ten gets left behind. So a tenth of the brothers get
left behind while the others go back to report back to Jacob.
And so the Bible talks a lot about a tenth and the tenth of
the children of Israel and what's going to be going on during the
tribulation time. It's a fascinating study. But it's all a picture
of the future. So there's some practical lessons
though in these verses. First thing is when things get
lean, don't wait for someone else to fix the problem. Now,
that's just a very practical lesson. He says to his sons,
why do you look one upon another? He said, behold, I have heard
there's corn in Egypt. Now, Jacob's an old man. He's
telling his boys what to do, but the boys are just sitting
around like most Americans. And they're saying, well, times
are good. Let's just keep on, you know, and they're running
out of food. And they have no food, ultimately. And he says,
what are you looking around for? Get to work. And we're becoming
a lazy society in the United States. We are expecting welfare. We are expecting handouts. We're
expecting health care. And I have on your sheet, you
have no economic rights. You understand that? You have
no economic rights. You don't have right to health
care. You do not have right to health care. You do not have
right to us communications, cell phones. You do not have right
to transportation. You do not have rights to do,
there's a lot of things I could just go down list, but when it
comes to economics especially, you don't have any rights. It
is not your right, and I hope I'm preaching to the choir, but
it is not your right to take my tax money and to put it in
your wallet and your money not be taxed. But you know that's
what's going on, and people, you say, well, that's what the
government's doing. Yeah, but check yourself. And our sympathies
go out to that kind of thing. The poor, the poor, the poor.
And I'm one of the poor, and I should get help. And who's
going to help me? Well, OK, fine. There are times when you might
need help, and I might need help. And I'm not trying to paint myself
into a corner either and say, never help me if I'm in dire
straits. But what I'm telling you is, as a society, the culture
will shape our thinking instead of the Bible shaping our thinking.
And we'll be thinking, well, somebody owes me something. There
must be a government program that can help me with this. Well,
how about the idea that maybe God is doing in your life what
he was doing in Joseph's life, or how about the idea that he
was doing in your life what he's doing in the 10 brothers' lives,
where he's trying to reunite the family and bring them all
the way, I think it's like 200, close to 200 miles to Egypt to
reunite with their brother so that their whole nation could
be saved and thrive and be born, a son could be born unto God
and be taken out of Egypt and his name would be spread throughout
the whole earth 400 years later because of what he did with the
plagues and Pharaoh. But all because you say, well,
I don't want to suffer. I have my rights. Well, we have no rights.
We have no economic rights in this country. Even though our
country is very generous, and most of you, I'm sure, are very
generous, it's not the obligation of you to take care of everyone,
number one. And it's not the obligation for anybody to take
care of you, either. All right? Every man can pull
his own weight. Listen, I've been in third world
countries, and I've seen poverty like you've never seen. If all
you've ever lived in this country, you've never seen poverty. But
if you go, and I can take you to some places, and you could
see the poverty, then you would see, well, how are those people
even alive? Because they're not just looking at each other, asking,
who's going to take care of me? They're getting up every day,
and they're taking care. And a lot of people die, too. A lot of
people get sick and have premature deaths. No doubt about it. But
they also can take care of themselves, and so can we. We need to examine
what we're doing and be willing to change if necessary. You know,
some people, they're just not willing to change. Well, this
is what I know to do, and this is all I've ever done, and I
can't possibly. Yes, you can. You can change. You can adapt. You can move.
You can become something different. You can go to, you know, you
can dig a ditch if you have to. You can do whatever you've got
to do. And some people will say, well, I'm above that. Well, God
will show you what you're above or what you're not above. I would
never do that job." Oh, really? You might find yourself doing
that job someday. Or you might just volunteer to
take that job so that God doesn't look at you and say, well, you're
lazy, I'm not helping you. You know, some money is better
than no money. And just have an attitude of appreciation.
And don't be thinking that somebody owes you more. And then when
you look around and see what other people have and et cetera, et
cetera, that's just that's life. And it's unfortunate. But it's
a good lesson. Why do you look one upon another?
He says God sent a physical need to cause Israel to find Joseph,
to find Joseph and God. He's a type of Jesus Christ.
Right. God will send sometimes many times physical needs into
our lives that we might see Christ. You know, it is unfortunate,
as I said, that we have to get so far down. You know, there's
a lot of discussion. I shouldn't say it that way.
There are times when you have to decide if you're going to
help somebody or not. And you know what? Usually one
of the things that pops into my mind in terms of do I help
them or not is this. Well, have they reached the bottom
yet? If they're not at the bottom, you say, well, how far can they
go? Well, you know, they missed lunch today. Well, that's not
the bottom. They didn't eat at all yesterday.
That's not the bottom. And it's not about just food.
I'm talking about just a lot of things. You know, sometimes
people get bailed out, bailed out, bailed out of all their
problems, and they never reach rock bottom. You know, one of
the things that you'll see in the jail with the guys that show
up at the jail is the appreciation they have for Jesus Christ. and
for the second chance that they've been given, because they've reached
bottom. There's nothing left for them. They even know when
they get out, because of their felony that they have on their
record, that they're not even going to get a good job. They
may not even ever get hired. They're going to struggle the
rest of their lives. They have the guilt and remorse for whatever
put them in prison in the first place. but they appreciate a
second chance. But some of those guys, they
had to be there. They had to reach rock bottom
in order for God to get a hold of them like that. Because if
they had been running loose out here in society doing whatever
they please, they would have never reached bottom. They would
have never sought God. And God would have never been
able to save them. And so here it is, they're at that position
where he's a type of Christ and a physical need comes across
the whole world. that they might go to a place
where the second in command happens to be a Christian. He happens
to fear God and be used by God and knows God, and if the whole
world were to come to Joseph, they would have possibly, even
Egypt itself, if they would have said, Joseph, help us, teach
us, but they were just all about their physical, right? Even Jacob
is just about the physical, go by. And you know what a lot of
people do? They just want to come to God,
what can you give me? God, what can you give me? I'm not here
to submit at the feet of Joseph and learn the ways of Joseph
and what put him in power. And how is it that you went from
rags to riches? How is it that you went from
being sold as a slave to being second in command to Pharaoh
and running the country and having the wisdom to interpret dreams?
Tell us all that, Joseph. No, they're just there to buy
something from God to get what they need to get through another
day so that they can live their lives without God. That's another
lesson, too. But spiritual needs are often
realized when physical problems occur. The prodigal son, Luke
15, we won't turn to it, is a prime example of that. He had to go
all the way to the bottom. He spent all of his living on
riotous living, and he went into the pig's pen, and he's eating
pig's food. He's eating slop, and you know
what the Bible says about him? It says, and he came to himself. He finally woke up and realized,
what am I doing here? Look at me. I'm a mess. And rather
than just go on in that, rather than pulling a trigger and ending
it all, he called on God. And he says, I'll go back to
my father and I'll just be one of his hired servants. I have
no expectations. I have no rights. I have no demands. I just want
mercy because I know my father is a merciful God. And so that's
a picture of this. Jesus invites weary sinners to
come to him. Matthew 11, 28, I have it on
your sheet, just an easy one I think most of you know. Come
unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest. I mean, that's a great thought.
You know, to be able to just lay down in the arms of Jesus
and say, just give me rest. just give me peace. You know,
he's the only one that has peace, can offer peace, peace with God
so you're not going to hell someday and the peace of God so that
you can actually get some rest and that you can actually have
a future to look forward to. And he says, if you're heavy,
if you're laden, if you're burdened, you can just come to me. Cast
all your cares upon me for I care for you. And so that's a picture
of that. Let's see, verses four through
nine. But Benjamin, Joseph's brother,
Jacob sent not with his brethren, for he said, lest peradventure
mischief befall him. And the sons of Israel came to
buy corn among those that came, for the famine was in the land
of Canaan. And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he
it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren
came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
Sound familiar? Now they're bowing down before
their brother, and they didn't know it. And Joseph saw his brethren,
and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake
roughly unto them. And he said unto them, Whence
come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.
And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. And Joseph
remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto
them, Ye are spies. To see the nakedness of the land,
ye are come." We'll stop right there. You know, at this point,
Benjamin, his little baby brother, was about 30. Now, it's hard
to figure out his age, but roughly in that age range. He's an older
guy. He's not a little teenager, a little runt. He's a grown man.
But it's interesting that Jacob wouldn't let him go with the
brethren. Now, understand this, that Joseph and Benjamin were
sons of who? Rachel, the beloved, the one
he really loved. And he knew, based on the massacre
that they had done years before, and the things that his brother,
and I'm sure over time, he was wise enough to figure out that
they might have done something insidious to Joseph, rather than,
you know, Joseph just got eaten by an animal. And so he's like,
Benjamin's not going with you. And so he didn't get to go. But in verse five, you have the
first word of the first use of the word governor in the Bible,
another type of Jesus Christ. Joseph's title was governor.
And the Bible says in Matthew two, six, for out of these shall
come a governor that shall rule my people. And that will be Jesus
Christ one day in the millennial reign of Christ. When the brothers
arrived, they bowed down to Joseph, but they knew him not. And during
Christ's ministry, the people knew Jesus not. Go to John chapter
1 and look at this. John chapter one in verse 10
and 11. He was in the world and the world
was made by him and the world knew him not. He came unto his
own, and his own received him not. I'll stop there for a second,
but you know what? That's a great way to witness.
When you're talking to people, again, don't make it about which
religion is right, and my religion is better than your religion.
Make it about where did you come from? You know, the three great
questions that you can pose to people is, where did you come
from, why are you here, and where are you going when you die? Those
are three great questions that the philosophers of the world
can't answer. Where did I come from? Well, who knows? I was
just playing Tennessee the other day, and there's this woman that
I don't even talk to her anymore because she's just so out there.
She goes to some church, and the church is all about the cosmos. Of course, they put the Christian
terms on it, God and Jesus, but they also put the names universe
on it. And I was sitting there, you know, just getting ready
to get on the court and she was behind me and she was saying,
well, you know, I don't like to talk that way because I don't
want the universe to get mad at me. I'm like, oh my goodness. And I just kept my mouth shut.
I went out and played tennis. But the thing is, is that that's
how people think. But you know, when you witness
them, where did you come from? They don't have an answer. You know,
the Bible says he was in the world and the world was made
by him. Jesus is the one who made you. You know, God, yes,
but Jesus is the one who made you, and Jesus is the one who
came and died for you. Jesus is the one who offers you
a free gift of salvation. That's a way to witness to people.
Jesus made you. Well, if Jesus made me and he
put all this problem, we talked about that, right? If he put
all this problem in the world, then yeah, but he came before the foundation
of the world. Before he ever made you, he had a plan to redeem
you. And I can't understand, of course we can't understand
why he lets sin go on and why the devil, we said all that too,
but we understand that he made us and he's the one who wants
to redeem us. But it says this, and we should be happy with this,
but as many as received him. Have you received him this morning?
You know, it's not enough to believe in Him. You have to receive
Him. We encounter this quite often.
Talking to people, and don't get into conversations with people
and say, oh, they must be saved, they must be saved. They talked
about God. They believe in God. They even
said they believe in Jesus Christ. But here's the bigger question.
Have you received Him? You say, well, what's the difference? There's a big difference. You
have to receive Jesus Christ into your life. You don't acknowledge
Him. You don't say, yeah, I believe He exists, and I believe, well,
it's better than the choice of evolution. Jesus is a better
choice. No, that is not you putting your
trust and faith in Jesus Christ and receiving Him as your Savior.
The Bible tells you, but as many as received Him, to them gave
He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe
on His name. So it's very simple. You just gotta believe the record
that God gave of His Son. Whoever receives Jesus Christ
gets eternal life. Whoever doesn't gets damnation
and goes with their father, the devil. Sorry, back to Genesis
here. So Jesus is called the governor,
and he will be the governor of the world to come. When the brothers
arrived, they bowed down to Joseph, but they knew him not, just like
the world knows not Jesus. And our jobs, our description
is that we're ambassadors for Christ. So we're supposed to,
we are part of the body of Christ. We will be on display one day,
so why not be on display now? Right? Why not just represent
Jesus Christ the best way you can so that other people, are
you fortunate to be saved? You are. You're fortunate to
be saved. Listen, the majority of the world
is on their way to hell. Broad is the way. And narrow
is the way that leads to eternal life and few there be that find
it. There were eight people that
got on Noah's Ark. There's going to be less than just a remnant
of people that make it through the tribulation. And why would
we think that there's going to be some kind of heyday here now
that everybody must know God? People don't know God. They're
being deceived. And the devil is very subtle.
He's deceiving them. Well, as long as you believe
in God, as long as you do good works, you know, as long as you, well,
you went to buy corn, you stood before the Lord. He gave you
a favor. Don't mistake God's benevolence for his forgiveness.
God is benevolent. He gives us air to breathe. He
gives us water to drink. He gives us food to eat. He lets
it grow right out of the ground. He lets us have access to it.
Well, God must care for me. That doesn't mean He cares for
you. That doesn't even mean He knows your name. Depart from
me into everlasting fire. I never knew you. So don't mistake
the benevolence of God for the forgiveness of God. You must
receive Jesus Christ as your Savior. Pilate looked right into
the face of Jesus, the truth. He asked the question, the most
ironic question anyone could ask looking at Jesus. What is
truth? He's the Word of God. He's the
third part of the Trinity or the second part of the Trinity,
however you want to say it. He is in 1 John 5, 7, he's called
the Word and thy Word is truth. And he looks right in the face
of Jesus. He says, what is truth? He didn't even recognize him.
And so we ought to make sure that we recognize Jesus Christ,
and we ought to represent him correctly, and we ought to speak
about him correctly, and we ought not to let this evangelical,
charismatic, goofy crowd that changes their Bibles describe
who Jesus is. We ought to be the ones who describe
who Jesus is. You are the ones who know the
truth about Jesus Christ. You ought to make sure you set
people straight. Now, not to get in arguments, not to be hated,
and not to be fighting with people, but you ought to be setting people
straight. It's a matter of life and death. Well, I don't want
to offend them. Would you rather see them burn
in hell? I'd rather run the risk of offending
them. Paul said it. Paul said, am I becoming your
enemy because I tell you the truth? He asked them, am I your enemy?
I'm just telling you the truth. Now, you can speak the truth
in love, of course. That's what the Bible says. Let's see here. In verse 6, the
brothers bow down to Joseph, which brings Joseph's dream to
memory in verse 9. But that was not the literal
fulfillment, as only 10 of the brothers were present. If you
go over to Genesis 44, we don't have to turn to it, but you have
the reference, you can see where all the brethren are present.
All of them now know who Joseph is, because this is after the
fact, and they all choose to bow down before him. And so his
dream is fulfilled. And you know what's also interesting
about this story? A lot of this story could have
been figured out a long time ago if Joseph's, very simple,
if Joseph, or if Jacob and the family, the brothers, would have
just believed the dreams. If they would have just believed
the dreams, he would have never been sold into slavery, there
would have never been a seven-year famine, there would have never,
never, never. All these things, and we make that application
to ourselves. If we would have just listened
to God 10 years ago, if we had just listened to God 20 years
ago, or when I was a kid and I was in church, if I had just
listened, but here I am down the road with all the scars and
all the burdens and all the mental pain and all the emotional pain
and all the things that go with my life because I just didn't
listen to what God said way back then, it would have all been
avoided. So they all bowed down in Genesis 44 willingly to Joseph. But you know what Philippians
2, 10 and 11 says? Go there, Philippians chapter
2. Again, great type of Jesus Christ. And again, it's very practical.
You either want to bow the knee to Jesus Christ, the God of the
universe today, or you want to bow to him by force later. Philippians
chapter 2 and verse 10. It says that at the name of Jesus,
every knee should bow of things in heaven, and things in earth,
and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess
that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. You know what
God is going to make all of His creation do? He is going to make
all of His creation say the name of Jesus Christ and say that
Christ is Lord. They are all going to say it.
Jesus Christ is Lord. You know who else is going to
say it? The Lucifer is going to say it. The devil is going
to admit with all the rest of creation You know what? I was wrong. Jesus Christ is. He is Lord. And I will obey him
because I am going to be bound and thrown into a lake of fire
for all of eternity. I will not be able to disobey
that command. That's just such a terrible thought
to me, even for him. I don't wish that even on him. I don't know about you, but I
think about the fallen angels. I think about they were in the
presence of God. And they saw the glory of God. They walked
heaven. They saw the power of God. And, you know, they just
decided to go the other way. And, you know, you can't help
but feel for that in a way. But they're all going to obey.
They're all going to bow the knee. So we have a choice. Do
we bow the knee voluntarily now before God and Jesus Christ,
or do we just do it by force later in our rebellion and get
thrown into a devil's hell? Joseph used this occasion, by
the way, to speak roughly to his brethren, just as Jesus did
to those who betrayed him. Jesus, you can look all through
his earthly ministry, was never kind to the religious leaders.
Anyone who was seeking to betray him or trip him up in his words,
catch him, kill him, crucify him, whatever they want to do
to him, he always spoke roughly to them. But every time they
brought a sinner before him, every time they brought someone
who was in real need, he spoke very gently and kindly to them.
And that's a great lesson again for us. You don't want to be,
you know, if you want to speak rough about God and have all
these atheistic approach to the Lord and God and why he made
everything and why he's to blame for everything, God's going to
deal roughly with you. He's not gonna deal kindly with you. But
if you humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, He will
exalt you in due time, and He will take care of you, and He
is a kind, merciful, loving, gracious God. So verse 10 through
17, we'll get a couple more verses in here. And they said unto him,
Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. We're
not spies. Verse 11, we are all one man's sons, we are true men.
Thy servants are no spies. And he said unto them, Nay, but
to see the nakedness of land are ye come. And they said, Thy servants are
twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan.
And behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one
is not. And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake
unto you, saying, Ye are spies. Hereby ye shall be proved by
the life of Pharaoh you shall not go forth hence except your
younger brother come hither. Send one of you and let him fetch
your brother and ye shall be kept in prison that your words
may be proved whether there be any truth in you or else by the
life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. And he put them all together
in ward three days. So he locks his brothers up in
prison. So in response to Joseph's accusation
The brothers, they're saying, nay, my lord, we're come to buy
food. His brothers are driven to a confession. They're starting
to confess. Oh, they start to spill the beans.
We're just 12 brethren. One of them's with our father,
and our father's still alive, and one of them died, and we're
just innocent men, and they just start to, you can see, after
20 plus years of living with what they did to their brother,
it's still working on them. You know, there are some things
that God is still working on you about, and it doesn't matter
how much time passed, time doesn't heal all wounds. It helps sometimes,
and it does help in situations, but not all. When God is trying
to help you, He is trying to remind you of what you have against
Him. Is there ought between me and
God? You say, well, I don't have to have any, you know, God will
forgive me. What sins are you talking about?
Right? Yeah, but if you're lost today,
there is something between you and God that needs to be taken
care of, and God is bringing it to your mind. And you know
what it is? It's the thing that so easily besets you. It's the
thing that keeps you away from God. It's the thing that keeps
you from accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior. And you're deciding
between the two. Do I keep this thing that I don't
want to get rid of, or do I let it go? Say, does he have to let
it go to get saved? No, not really. but he has to
be willing to let it go. He has to be desirous to let
it go. He has to want, you know, God knows the heart. God knows
what you're doing. God knows if you're saying, well,
I prayed the prayer. You know, I just prayed the prayer
one day, so I must be saved, but I just go on and live how
I want to live. Well, God knows the heart. And He is the judge. He is the one that will determine
that one day. So, They're starting to confess,
and one piece of advice, by the way, we have this thing in the
United States called the Fifth Amendment. You know what the
Fifth Amendment is? It's the right to not be compelled
to be a witness against yourself. And that's what you do in court.
Sometimes you go into court and they're going to say, well, John,
come to the witness stand. We got some questions for you.
And I say, I plead the fifth. And I would recommend, by the
way, that you might want to do that in normal everyday life.
Don't get wrapped up. These brothers, what they're
doing, it's not a bad thing because actually talking to Joseph, a
type of Christ, Joseph, who loves them and cares about them, Joseph,
who is looking for the admission, Joseph, who is wanting to reveal
himself to them, but he can't reveal himself to them. Get the
type. He can't reveal himself to them because they won't reveal
themselves to him. They won't expose themselves
to him and be honest and open with him, so he can't be that
way with them. Right? So he's wanting that, but still,
in a practical way, look at chapter 43. Just turn a page and look
at 43, and look at the advice of Jacob on this. Chapter 43
and verse 6, and Israel said, that's me, Jacob, wherefore dealt
ye so ill with me as to tell the man whether ye had a brother?
He locks him up in jail and says, until you go get your brother.
Okay, if you would be true men, go get your brother, and then
you can prove yourself to me. Why did I tell him I had a brother?
Right? Shut your mouth is good advice. When you get pulled over by the
cop, just shut your mouth. Hello, officer. Driver's license,
please. Yes, sir. What did I do? Well, I wasn't. And people get out of the car.
Next thing you know, they got handcuffs behind them. Next thing you know,
they're being hauled off. Shut your mouth. That's good advice. The Bible talks a lot about shutting
our mouths. Look at Proverbs 13 real quick. I gave you the
references. You say, well, that's just you.
No, it's the Bible. Proverbs 13 and verse 3. You say, well, that's lying if I
don't tell them everything. No. You're dumb. Can I be generous
to you? That's dumb. But they ask and I didn't say
it. You don't have to say it. Plead the fifth. It's in the
Constitution. You're a United States citizen,
plead the 5th. Look at Proverbs 13, 3. He that
keepeth his mouth keepeth his life, but he that openeth wide
his lips shall have destruction. Is that enough for you? Look
at just one more. I only have one more reference for you. Chapter
21, verse 23. Whoso keepeth his mouth and his
tongue keepeth his soul from troubles." Now, read Proverbs,
it's filled with it. Alright? You don't have to spill
the beans, but these guys... But here's the difference, okay?
That's just a general practical everyday when you're dealing
with this world. Good advice. But, when you're dealing with
the Lord, He demands an answer. Right? And so, we don't just
say, well, you know, God doesn't know. He knows. Joseph looked
right. He saw his brothers. He knew
his brothers didn't say that in a passage, but they knew not
him in verse 8 They didn't know him Just like when Jesus came
the world he came into the world. It came into his own. They knew
him not They didn't know Pilate's looking truth in the face and
he doesn't even recognize truth if he would have hopefully he
would have dropped to his knees and gotten saved But people look
right at Jesus and they don't know. The brothers didn't know,
but Joseph knew. But he wasn't going to reveal himself. He put
him in jail. He didn't reveal himself because they weren't
willing to open their mouths. But they began. They began to.
It's a good thing. The brothers were doing the right
thing because no one ever cared for them like Jesus. No one ever
cared for me like Jesus, the song goes. No one ever cared
for me, in this case, like Joseph, my brother. You know, Jesus calls
us brethren. And no one ever cared for you
like that. No man ever cared for you enough to lay down his
life for his friends. Isn't it okay to entrust your
confidence in the Lord? Isn't it okay to spill your guts
to Him? It absolutely is, and He's waiting for us to do that.
Joseph still loved his family. Go back to Genesis and look at
chapter 42 and verse 24. You could see it. Surely he was
angry. Surely he was bitter with his
brothers. Surely he was like, oh, vengeance is mine. This is
the time, Lord. You brought him before me. Now
I can squash him like a bug. I'm going to put him in 13 years
of prison like I was 13 years in prison. I'm going to make
him feel the pain that I felt. And you know, that's the way
we all are. You said that to me. Well, what about I'm going
to say this back to you? You did this to me. Well, wait till
I get done with you. and that's how we are, right? But that's
not how Joseph was because that's not how the Lord is with us.
If we got our just desserts, right, we all know. What'd I
say, 42 in verse 24. And he turned himself, during
this conversation, he turned himself about from them and wept
and returned to them again and communed with them. He wept.
because he couldn't contain himself. He wanted so badly, Jesus wants
so badly, I believe this, he wants so badly for men to be
reconciled unto him. Our message is be ye reconciled,
right? And he wants the world to be
reconciled. He gave himself on the cross. He suffered all that
so that men could be reconciled. And here's Joseph, he's weeping
over his brethren, only if they would reveal themselves. Look at chapter 43 and verse
30. And Joseph made haste again during
a conversation, for his bowels did yearn upon his brother, and
he sought where to weep, and he entered into a chamber and
wept there." He didn't want to do it in front of them. He didn't
want them to see because they had not yet revealed themselves
to him. So I'm going to wrap it up here. Joseph still loved his family.
We looked at those verses just as Jesus so loved the world and
gave his only begotten son while we were yet sinners. And no doubt
he was seeking a confession from them. Jesus, in 1 John 1, 9,
I know it's speaking to Christians, but it says he's faithful and
just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
He will not use our confession against us. He will just take
it and he will forgive it. and he will put it as far as
the east is from the west, and he will bury it deep into the
deepest sea, and he'll say, now come unto me. Okay, you've done
all that, I understand, but I've already taken care of it. I've
already given you forgiveness, and just come on in. And that's
what Joseph was willing and wanting and ultimately did do for his
brethren because they finally did admit to them, and we'll
look at all that next week.
