Genesis chapter 5 verses 1 through 5. Genesis 5, 1 through 5. This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them and called them mankind in the day they were created. And Adam lived 130 years and begot a son in his own likeness after his image and named him Seth. After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were 800 years, and he had sons and daughters. So all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever. You may be seated. Let's pray as we come to the preaching of God's word. Our Father, we ask that you would Help us all to take heed to what we hear. Thank you for the book of Genesis. Thank you for how foundational it is in understanding this life and the life to come. And we pray you would open our eyes to see wondrous things from your law. May those who are not saved come to see their sin and salvation in Christ. And those who are saved, may they grow in their love for your word and love for you because of it. And we pray all this in Jesus' name. Amen. So we saw last Lord's Day the reality of how Adam and Eve were given another son in the place of Abel, that son being Seth, who was in the godly line, of course, ultimately until the Lord Jesus Christ. And then we also saw that men began to call upon the name of the Lord, not that they did it for the first time and they only started doing it then, but there was a revival of calling upon God's name. And so now we will see in this chapter the genealogy of Adam and how God worked and his descendants, of course, climaxing in the Lord Jesus Christ. And so the main point of this sermon is the genealogy of Adam, the genealogy of Adam. And that's my one and only point. So verses one through five is all about the genealogy of Adam. And so I talked about this some last Lord's Day, but it's important for us to remember that genealogies in the Old Testament serve the purpose of pointing ultimately to the one who would be the ultimate descendant of Adam. and Seth the Lord Jesus Christ. Genealogies in the Old Testament serve the purpose of preparing the people of God for the Messiah, the Lord Jesus. And so all genealogies have that purpose of God fulfilling his promise to bring about the sea of the woman who would crush the serpents And so Adam is in Christ's genealogy. So is Seth. These people are in his genealogy because it's showing that God's promise from the beginning was fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. And so we see in verse one, it begins by a summary statement by saying, this is the book of the genealogy of Adam. And then it goes on to say in verse one, in the day that God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. And so this is the genealogy or the generations of Adam. And God created man, and when God created man, he made man in his own likeness. Man, unlike the animals, was created with the purpose of to have relationship with God and also be able to reflect God's image. Unlike the animals, man was uniquely made for these purposes. to have a relationship with God of love and devotion and affection, and that he would be able, unlike the animals, to reflect what God was like. And so God made man unlike anything else he made in his own image, in his own likeness, to resemble him. And then we see in verse 2, In verse 2, man is not just to be considered in this context only males, but God created man, He created them, male and female, and blessed them and called them mankind in the day they were created. And so when God made mankind, He made two sexes. male and female. So you have mankind is the broad category or man is the broad category and under that broad category mankind are the two sexes male and female. God blessed them male and female and called them male and female mankind. And so we see that God made both male and female. He made Adam from the dust of the ground. And he took Eve from a rib of Adam and so we live in a world where this would you would think or you would think we would live in a world where this is just assumed and obvious to everyone that you're either male or you're female and there's nothing you can do to change it but sadly we live in a culture with much confusion where there's confusion on what it means to be male what it means to be female and we live in a culture that actually thinks you can change and go from being male to female or female to male But we see in the beginning how God created it. We are either male or we are female. We are either female or we are male. We cannot be both. We are either male or female. And so when anyone fights against that design, when anyone fights against God's makeup of them, when anybody rebels against how they were made as either male or female, they sin against God. Because God has made us either male or female, and so when we say to God, God, I don't want to be male, even though that's how you made me, or I don't want to be female, even though that's the way you made me, they're rebelling against God's creation order. And this is what makes what we call transgenderism so bad, because it's saying to God, I don't like the way you made me. I wish I was something else. I wish I was made a different way. And instead of rejoicing in the way God made us, we rebel and fight against, culturally speaking, there are people who fight against the way God has made them. But if you're here without Christ, and you might be thinking, that is so silly that someone could fight against being male or female. Of course, I'm either male or female. Of course, that's the way God made me. Well, you might say that, but if you are not trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ, no matter if you agree that you're either male or female, you are also rebelling and rejecting the way God made you, because He made you to have relationship with Him, to be saved by Him, to be redeemed by Him. God made you for the purpose of having fellowship with you. And whether you agree that we're male or female, if you are rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ and His salvation, you are also rebelling against God. And so we can rebel against God in many ways, but as unbelievers, if you're an unbeliever, you're rebelling against God because you're saying to God, I don't want you and your purposes for my life. I don't want to be saved. I don't want to have a right relationship with you. And so you might look at people who act and live and say, how can anyone believe in being transgender? While all the while you are rejecting the God who made you for his glory. And so the only way that you can resemble and live as God wants you to live is by being in Christ, who alone can save you from your sin. And then for the believers here, if you think as a female Christian, God made you female for a reason. And therefore the question for you, if you are a female, do you rejoice in being female? Do you rejoice in that God didn't make you male, but he made you female? Do you rejoice in what God made you to be as a woman? Do you rejoice in cultivating a gentle and quiet spirits? Do you rejoice in being a helper and submissive to your husband? Do you rejoice in being caring and nurturing? Because it's not good enough for Christian ladies to say, yeah, obviously I'm a female and I shouldn't be male because God made me female. You should also go farther than that in rejoicing and celebrating and living as a godly female according to your design, with a gentle and quiet spirit, by being a helper and submissive to your husband and caring and nurturing others. And so we not only acknowledge that we're either male or female, but being female means you ought to live and act and devote yourself to God as a female and rejoice in the fact that God made you a female. So the question for the ladies is, do you rejoice in God making you a female and a Christian so that you can be, by his help, a godly, feminine, Christian woman? And then as well for the men. Do we rejoice that God has made us male and rejoice in being male Christians? Do we rejoice in what God has made us to be? Because it's not good enough for us to say we're not too supposed to change our sex and be transgender. We of course know that's not true for Christians, but do we rejoice in what God may us to be as men and rejoicing that we're male? Do we rejoice in being strong and courageous? Do we rejoice in leading? Do we rejoice in providing and protecting? And so God has made us either male or female, and God desires females to rejoice in being female, and God desires for males to rejoice in being males. And so sometimes we can get in our mind, the only thing I need to be is against transgenderism and we should be against that sinful practice, but it's not good enough if we're not also as Christians rejoicing in the way God made us. Whether it's male or whether it's female. Rejoicing in the fact that God made us male or female and living in light of that design, living in light of the fact of being a woman or a man, a boy or a girl. And so God made mankind in the beginning and he made them male and female and he blessed them as male and female. Now, verse three. And Adam lived 130 years and begot a son in his own likeness after his image and named him Seth. So after living 130 years, Adam had a child whose name was Seth and he was in his own likeness after his image. Which means, one, of course, Seth, like Adam, was in the image of God. But I think also it means here that Adam had a son in his own likeness who was named Seth. And that son was born corrupted because Adam fell. He was born with a corrupt nature and Seth just like every other human had to be redeemed by Christ. Even though Seth was part of the godly line and was was a godly man, he also, just like every other person, had to be redeemed. Because in light of the Fall, we are not born innocent or perfectly holy. We are born corrupt and guilty and sinful by birth. And therefore, Adam, who brought the Fall into the world, beget a son. who was born with a corrupt nature, who had to be redeemed, who had to be rescued from his sin, who had to be brought out of darkness into light because he was born in his iniquity. And so again, as speaking in application from this verse, if you're not a Christian, if you're not in Christ, you stand before God in cess sinful condition before he was converted by being lost and dead in your trespasses and sins. And the only way that you can be redeemed by God is to come to God through repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Just like Seth, you and everyone else was born in sin, and the only way that you can be redeemed from your sin is through Jesus Christ, through the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And then parents, all those who would be parents, are parents, must know that all their children are born in sin, and therefore the only way that children can be rescued from their sin problem is through the gospel, is through salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. The problem with children and every other person without Christ is sin because every child is born in sin and shaped in iniquity. And also as believers, we should praise God that even though we were born sinful, corrupt, depraved, lost, hostile to God, he brought us out of that sinful darkness into his glorious lights. We were once lost and without mercy and without salvation. And He brought us out of that condition into the grace of His Son, Jesus Christ. Where Seth, who was even though born in sin, was redeemed by God and given newness of life. And now verse 4. After he, that is Adam, begot Seth, The days of Adam were 800 years and he had sons and daughters. So after having Seth, God gave Adam another 800 years. And during that time, 800 years, Adam had sons, and not only sons, but Adam had daughters. Adam, even in light of the fall, was given the great privilege and the great blessing of having and rearing children. God could have allowed no seed to come. He could allow no children to come. But God, even in light of the fall, blessed Adam and Eve with many offspring. And so we see that God gave them the greatest blessing, one of the greatest blessings, that a married couple can have in the blessing of children. And so again, God could have cut off seed. He could have stopped it. But because God was going to bring about the sea of the woman, who we know as the Lord Jesus Christ, he was bringing about sons and daughters to fulfill that purpose and letting humans experience the blessing of having children. And of course, just like Adam and Eve would have rejoiced in their children and the blessing even in light of the fall, so we should rejoice in the blessing of children, knowing that we want children who glorify God, seek His will, because above everything else, we want godly offspring. We want children that love and serve and honor God. And when we have the blessing of children, when we get the blessing of children, we want them to be godly. And that's why parents must first and foremost in the decisions that they make, make every decision around the fact of I want my child to be a godly offspring. So many parents sadly have children, but they're focused more on them being good athletes, they're focused more about them being good academically, they're more focused about them having a good job, which none of these things are inherently wrong, but if they have those priorities above them being godly offspring, they miss the point of why God gave them children. God gave parents children for the purpose of them having godly offspring. And so we should rejoice and seek to train children to be godly seed for his glory. And now verse five, it says, so all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. It's very interesting, even though Adam brought the fall into the world, he brought judgment and condemnation in the world, God allowed Adam to have a long life, very long, 930 years. And so we see that God allowed Adam to have a long life, even in light of the fall, but because of the reality of sin and the judgment of God upon sin, Adam died. Adam died. It's appointed for man to die once, and after that, the judgments. And so Adam lived all these years, 930 years, but there still was a time where Adam died. where Adam died. Life and death are reality for all of us, just like Adam then, and just like us now. That Adam lived this long span, but eventually his life climaxed in death. We see that throughout this chapter. It names people, and he died. It names people, and he died. It names people, and he died. It names people, and he died. The only one that it says didn't physically die was Enoch, in this chapter, who was taken by God. Everyone else died physically. The fall came in, death. The fall came in, and therefore death. He lived, and then he died. He lived, and then he died. And so just like all of us here, we have a little bit of time to live, a short span of time in the grand scheme of things, a little nugget of life. And the only way that we can be prepared as individuals to die is if we have come to Christ the Lord. The only way that we can be ready to die. Most people are not ready to die. Most people are afraid of death. Most people are not prepared to die. Most people have no ability to prepare or not ready to die because they're lost and therefore they fear death and death is not a good thing for them. And so the only way a person can be ready to die is if they are trusting in Jesus Christ. That's the only way we can be ready to die. Every other way, we're never prepared to die. People are never prepared to die. They might say they're prepared, but no one is ever prepared to die unless they are trusting in Jesus Christ. And as believers, we must live our lives in light of the fact that we're gonna die. We're not going to live like we are now forever, and therefore we must live this life, if we're Christians, preparing for the last day of our life, trusting and obeying the Lord Jesus Christ. And because life is precious, we must steward it for God's glory. And so you have to think about yourself. When you die, what do you want to be remembered for? When you die, what do you want people to know about you, to remember about you, to consider about your life? When you die, what do you want people to know about you? And we should live our lives living in such a way that when we die, this is what people know about us. When I die, I want to be known for a few things. I want to be known that I lived a life of godliness. I want to be known that I was a good husband, a good father, if God gives me children, and a good pastor. I want to be known that I lived life faithfully. I'm not concerned about anything extravagant. I just want to be known as I did what God called me to in a godly way. And so you have to ask yourself the question, what do you want to be known for when you die? Because there's a point for man to die once and after that the judgment. And we should live this life in preparation for the judgment to come. We should live this life in preparation for the day when we will die. So many people live their life with no concept of death, no concept of life beyond the grave. They live only for the here and now, what they can get, what they can have, how they can do this and that, how they can be popular, how they can have the newest things. but those things are futile in light of eternity. What will it matter a million years from now how popular a person was, or how much money they had, or how many friends they had, or how much stuff they had if they don't know Christ? What will it matter? What will it matter for a person a million years from now if they live for this world but did not know Jesus? It will matter nothing because they will have Even if they gained the whole world and lost their soul, they would have gained absolutely nothing. And so when we think about death, it should lead us to contemplate our own lives, that we might be more prepared to die, that we might be trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone can save us from our sin. And as I began this sermon, but I want to reiterate it. Why does God give us these genealogies? One, I think, is to show us that these are true historical people and this is real history, but also because God is leading up in his purposes to the ultimate genealogy in our Lord Jesus Christ. Adam is a type of Christ. Adam points forward to our Lord Jesus Christ who will reverse the curse and bring people from darkness to light and destroy the works of the devil. And therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ is the seed of Adam in the sense of he is a descendant of Adam according to Luke chapter 3. And therefore, these genealogies point us past the first Adam to the last Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone can redeem sinners and who alone can bring salvation to a needy people. And so when we think about Adam being made in the image of God, and his wife Eve being made in the image of God, and all mankind being made in the image of God, it points us past all those things to the Lord Jesus Christ, who truly is the image of the invisible God, the one who alone can save sinners, the one who alone is the seed of the woman, the seed of Abraham, the seed of David, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. And so may God help us to look past this genealogy of the first Adam, to look to the last Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Our Father, we do thank you for your word. We pray you would help us to look to Christ, who alone can set us free from sin and death. And we thank you that he alone is the Savior and King of his people. In Jesus' name. Amen.
