Okay, this morning we're going
to be going out again, continuing on, and studying the Doctrine
of God, or theology proper. And again, this was originally,
I got this from Carrie Hardy of Grace Church. This was through
the Shepherd's Fellowship, which I was a member of for a while. I don't think it exists anymore,
or it's changed. This morning we're going to talk
about God's incommunicable perfections. Now, we'll give the definition
of that in just a moment. So, attributes. Attributes are the essential
qualities in which the being of God is revealed. There is a better word to use
in attributes, and that is God's perfections. We've talked about
that before in here, about God's perfections. It's God communicating to man
about, God communicates to man about his attributes, about what
it is that he is, about who that he is. What we're talking about
today is God's incommunicable, the things that can't be fully
understood. Three important aspects of God's
perfections. And these are very, very important
to keep in mind. These statements that I'm gonna
make, if you get these wrong, if you get any of these wrong,
it changes a proper view of God. First, we're not talking about
parts of God. We're not talking about parts
of God. One of God, and second, one of God's perfections is not
to be exacted or taken away at the expense of the others. They
all exist in perfect harmony with one another. Now, if you
think about experiences or things that you've been around and a you see something that's overemphasized
at the expense of something else. You know, God's grace over God's
mercy. Or you see anything of that. If we concentrate too much on,
and we focus too much on, this is where you can see splits come
from, and denominational splits come from, all sorts of things. So, we're not talking about parts
of God, and one of God's perfections is not to be exact at the expense
of others. They all exist in perfect harmony
with one another. Third, you can't alter any of
these perfections without altering the essential being of God. And of course, there's two types
of God's perfections. What we're talking about today is God's
incommunicable perfections. Some of God's perfections are
peculiar to Him and to Him alone. And then the second is the communicable
perfections. Other things besides God's, other
things other beings besides God exemplify or express these particular
qualities at some level. Man can express these attributes,
but not in infinite perfection. So God's incommunicable perfections. First is God's self-existence. In Genesis 1-1, There is no statement
about where God came from, because He didn't come from anything. All right, John 1, 1. Who's got the first one? John
1, 1. Okay. Deuteronomy 32, 39. Now see that I, even I, am He,
and there is no God besides me. I kill and make alive, I wound
and I heal. Alright, then John 5 verses 21
and 26. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them,
even so the Son gives life to whom He will. God didn't come from anything.
God is the first cause. God is independent. God is independent
in himself. Man is exactly the opposite. Man is
completely dependent. You think about it. There's nothing
that man has that he's not dependent for. But God is not like that. God
does not depend on anything from man. God doesn't need anything
from man. God is the Absolute Being. Four ways that God is independent.
The first is God is completely independent in His thoughts. Romans 11, verses 33 and 34. Second way that God is independent.
God is independent in His will. God's will is completely independent.
Deuteronomy 4 verse 35. Who's got that? You got that, Angela? Alright. Sorry. Daniel 435. How about
that one? Alright. Job 42 verse 2. God's will is independent. Third,
God is independent in His power. Psalm 115 verse 3. And then fourth, God is independent
in His counsel. Isaiah 40 and verse 13. This is the idea that God is
not learning new things. God doesn't learn anything new.
Nothing catches God off guard. God doesn't have to overcome
and adapt, anything like that. God is all-powerful. He does
not need to be worshipped, to be helped, or to be served. Is he accountable to anyone? He answers only to himself. God is completely, 100% self-existent. Then God's immutability. God
is devoid of all things in His being. God is devoid of all things
in His being, perfection, purposes, promises, everything about Himself. God cannot improve or deteriorate. He can't get any better, and
there's nothing bad in Him. Psalm 102, verses 26 and 27. All right, then Romans 1 23 James
1 17 God cannot improve. He cannot
deteriorate. He doesn't change. He's unchangeable. Think about everything that we
know. Everything that we know besides God is deteriorating. It's wasting away. This doesn't mean immobility,
that God does nothing, but rather immutability, that God's being
doesn't ever change. But what about the verses that
talk about God repenting? All right, we have these verses
that talk about God's repenting. Genesis 6, 6. All right, and then Exodus 32, 14. All right, this is This is what I'm gonna I'm gonna
I'm gonna write this down Maybe someone will fill the This is what's known as a, I'm
going to write it in big letters, maybe someone knows what I'm
going to go here. If I want to take a stab at that
word, That means that God, that means
that human feelings, this is when we try to apply, or when
we apply human feelings and passions being applied to God. God never
changes. Man changes all the time. So
therefore then, man thinks that God changes. Man thinks that
God changes. God makes his mind. When you
listen, this is one of the dangers. One of the dangers of, one of
the many, but think about Pentecostals. Pentecostals, they're
constantly changing God, they're constantly manipulating God,
so they think. You have, and I pick Pentecostals
out because I'm so far behind the time, because that's actually
something that goes on in many other circles. The idea, and
this is one of the reasons why we reject synergism over monergism, that
God and man work together to do something, that God is waiting
on man to do something. This is why salvation has to
be monergistic. These verses are not describing,
these verses that we read, talking about God repenting. These are
not describing a change in God, for God does not repent or change
His mind. Numbers 23, verse 19. Alright,
then 1 Samuel 15, 29. And also the strength of Israel
will not lie or repent, for he is not a man that he should repent. Alright, and Psalm 33 11. The
counsel of the Lord standeth forever, the thoughts of his
heart to all generations. Okay? So if we take those verses
in light of the verses we read about God's repenting or relenting
of things, we have to go to the more clear, right? The more clear
explain. So we have to see that God doesn't
change. So therefore, then, what do them
verses mean? Those verses are a way for us
to understand in human terms something that God has done looks
like to us. But according to these last three
verses, the thing that we see is what was in God's mind the
entire time. All right, God's infinity. God
is infinite in these ways, absolute perfection, infinity in relation
to quality, Matthew 5, verse 48. Emphasis there is on God's being
perfect. The fact, this fact qualifies
all of the communicable perfections of God. He has them in perfection
and man doesn't. Now when you think about people
that you've known or people that have been gifted in some way,
they may be gifted in some areas but they're not perfect. Even
the area that they're gifted in, they're not perfect. They
may be good at something, but they're not perfect. God is perfect
in everything. Every single thing about God
is perfect. Everything that he thinks and
does and even saying him thinking and him doing is hard for us
to when we try to really push that and think about God thinking. Because we think because we have
to constantly adapt. Again, these are just deep, deep
wells if you wanna go and get down into them. And I think that
you have to be very careful that you don't wind up off as a, for
example, says, where did God come from? Well, men could go, you could
go, you could drive yourself crazy trying to concentrate on
something like that that men have. God is free from all and
any limitations. There's no limit to the quality
of God's nature. It's as good as, it's better
than anything we can imagine. All right? Eternity. Infinity related there to time. Psalm 90 verses 2 and 4. God himself fills time. It's
his timelessness along with his self-existence and his immutability
that is portrayed in one of his names, and that is the name Yahweh. It literally means, I am who
I am. The name signifies God as the
one is, who was, and who is to be, the eternal one. He is the
great I am. Then third, His immensity. His infinity in relation to space. He's above all space and fills
every part of it. A common term to express to express
this of His infinity, is the term omnipresence. 1 Kings 8
verse 27. Psalm 139 verses 7 through 10. Jeremiah 23 verse 24. Then Hebrews
4.13. Now this, those verses, in light
of those verses, should bring a fear of God that leads to sanctification. That's what a good fear of God
does. A good fear of God leads to sanctification. A proper fear of God. All right,
God's unity. God is a unity. He is one. This includes two facts. God
is the only divine being. He's the only divine being. He
exists in a state of simplicity. God exists in three persons,
yet he is still one God. So God is the only divine being,
2 Samuel 7.22. Chapter 7.22. All right, then, Psalm 86, verse
10. Isaiah 42, 8. And then 4496. John 17 3. OK. So those are verses speaking
to God's being the only divine being. And then, God exists in
a state of simplicity. Deuteronomy 6, 4. So, God rules as the perfect, infinite
creator and the sustainer of everything. Contemplation of the facts about
God's perfections ought to bring us to worship, the very reason
that we're here today. It ought to provide a sense of
awe, a sense of reverence, and a sense of fear. We need, and what we should do,
one of the things it should do for us is it should take comfort
knowing of God's perfections. The world is not out of control
as it would seem. Whenever we see the news, we
see the things going on around us, it seems as though the world
is out of control, that there is no order, that there is no,
that we're just hopeless in all that's going on. Psalm 46 verse
1. And then 121 verse 4. Psalm 121
verse 4. God was not invented by man is some kind of comfort
for our disease or some kind of cure for our disease. God
wasn't. He's not the invention of man.
You see this. This is commonly I just saw a reference to it
the other day. I heard I heard there was a song
that came on the radio that heard that made reference to it that
that God is just an invention of men to try to control other
men. And that is If you think about the current,
you think about the current, think about the things that you know
that are currently going on in our culture, in our culture today,
right now today. Think about the reason behind
what that is. What is the reason behind it?
And the reason is this. And it's always the same, is
that man is at enmity with God, man is God's enemy, and he's
working every day to try to destroy God's created order, and to try
to take God off of the throne that he rightfully has, that
he will, that all men will see, right? Someday all men will see
that, all men will answer. Understand that mental assent
and understanding these facts about God is not equated to being
saved from your sin. James 2 verse 19. So believing these things, having
mental assent to them, is not salvation. There is a faith,
there is a faith that does not save. You have to submit, you
must submit your entire life to God. That is the faith that
saves. There is, however, a faith that
doesn't save. True saving faith includes the
understanding that you are a sinner and that your sin prevents you
from knowing and being redeemed to God, to the
God who made you, and the only God that can forgive sins. that
understanding Christ died on the cross and rose again to life
so that your sin debt could be paid for. And instead of believing
that your goodness is somehow going to save you, you must trust
in Jesus Christ to save you. And then a willingness to submit
your entire being, your whole life, to Christ as your Lord. All right, let's close with a
word of prayer. Our Heavenly Father, we thank
you, Lord, for the verses that we heard read today that help
to give us an understanding of our of our God and of our Lord
and Savior help us to this day that we would put all hindrances
aside, that you would help us to love you more today through
worship, through fellowship, through giving you praise and
honor. May you, may your son, our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
be put on the throne, his proper place here in this place today.
May you help us to be changed by your word and that we'd see
the great urgency there is to go and preach the gospel to every
living creature. For it's in Christ's name and
for his sake I pray, amen.
