Anchored in the Gospel

32 ( 21 | 11 )

The reason why the writer of Hebrews gives such an extensive and glorious description of Christ's superiority in chapter 1 is because this Hebrew church was about to "drift away" from the hope of the message of the Gospel. But God has given us means to help keep us anchored in the hope of the Gospel. Paul tells us in Eph 4 that we have been given the gifts of teachers and preachers to help ground and anchor us.

But as the writer warns in verse 2, there are consequences for drifting away. Under the old covenant, the angels were the means by which God's law was delivered (Gal 3:19, Acts 7:53). But despite the message being delivered by the angels, the message did not originate with them, but was given them by God, so they were His words. Therefore, to disobey this message delivered by the angels was to disobey God's very words and there were dire consequences for this disobedience.
