Dear friends, the subject in
this chapter has to do with Christian liberty, the way a Christian
has knowledge about the things of God from the scriptures, and
then how we are to live with those who might be of a weaker understanding, or
they might be new Christians, not so mature in the faith. And so friends here, the Apostle
Paul uses this illustration of the food that has been offered
to idols in those days. As it is in our day, people had
various religions and they believed that they should pray over certain
foods, they offer certain foods to certain idols and certain
so-called gods with a lower G. And so it was an issue, it was
a discussion. Should a Christian participate
in that? And so the apostle Paul speaks here and says, well, we
know there is only one God. We know that these things are
false things. We have this understanding by
the Word of God, and yet not all Christians are on the same
level, spiritually speaking, to appreciate those things. There
are some people who've come from that kind of a background, and
they have a more sensitive conscience about those things. And so what
should we do? What should these people, you
see, we are a mixed multitude here from all kinds of backgrounds.
And what should we do? Should a strong Christian say,
well, we know what is true. We know these things are false.
And so I just go ahead and do it. And I don't really care about
what other people think. I know what I am doing. And there
are times that people do that. And here the apostle Paul speaks
and says, when you put your knowledge against charity or love to God
and to your fellow brother and sister for whom Jesus Christ
died, charity wins, love wins. You are not compromising, but
for the sake of your brother or sister who is weaker and who
has a more sensitive conscience, you don't go with your liberty.
You have the right to, but you don't go with it because for
the love of the brethren, for the love of those around you. And this is something that is
a great struggle, dear friends. It's something that you ought
to, we ought to spend much time before God and deal with these
things before the Lord. And it is not, basically the
Apostle Paul says, it's not an easy thing. Your life cannot
be a black and white issue. We love it. If we just were told
this is it, it's either this or either that, yes or no. The Apostle Paul says it's not
yes or no. And so that is something that means that you have to bring
the matters before God. So friends, let us have love
for God and love for our fellow men and use our liberty and freedoms
in the Lord Jesus Christ. looking onto the Savior who himself
restrained himself from many things. For our sakes he died
and that the grace of God always must win. The grace of God in
our lives and then demonstration of that towards our fellow men
should dominate everything that we do. Well, may the Lord bless
these few thoughts to us. Let us come before God in prayer.
