What Motivates You To Serve?

There is a tendency in the Christian community to regard Martha as a symbol of an active life and Mary as an exemplar of the contemplative life. In many ways, Martha is unfairly put down, and Mary is exalted as an example of the life of a devoted Christian.

That characterization misses the author's intent.

This account should be seen as an exaltation to prioritize God's Word in a life of active service. Those of us who are anxious about many things of this life realize that the time we invest in fellowship with Jesus should inform how we serve Him.
