Early Monasticism, Music, Architecture
Series History of the Church - Class
158 ( 131 | 27 )
During the last part of the 4th century and into the early early 5th century we see the rise of monasticism. Early monasticism and asceticism stressed spiritual community, meaningful work, and production. However, some monks believed only by further acts of denial and ascetism could they grow closer to God. Simeon the Stylite the first to take this to an extreme, first alone in a hut and then on top of a high column or tower.
In addition in this session Gene talks about the music and architecture in the early church in the 4th and 5th centuries.
