for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation [mercy seat] by his blood, to be received by faith.-- Rom. 3:23-25

if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation [mercy seat] for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world—1 Jn. 2:1-2
