The last aspect of the elaborate description of the allotment of the land in chapters 13-21 is the assignment of towns for the Levites, whose lack of an inheritance in the land was mentioned in 13:14; 13:33; 14:3-4 and 18:7. This chapter reports the Levites' request (verses 1-3), the assignment of towns to them by lot (verses 4-8), a list of the towns (verses 9-40) and a conclusion (verses 41-42).
