Of Wisdom and Innocency

574

Christ, in his private preparation of his disciples for ministry, warned them that he was about to send them out as sheep in the midst of wolves. He himself had skilfully maneuvered around the schemes and traps of the Pharisees, only allowing himself to be captured when the predetermined time for his trial and crucifixion had come. Paul warns believers that wolves will sneak into the church as false teachers (Acts 20:29). Peter cautions us to be wary of our adversary, the devil (1 Peter 5:8). In this discourse we are taught to eschew gullible naïveté while maintaining innocence and tender-heartedness. “Be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16
