Love Supports!

59

In light of the current COVID-19 virus scare, what will we be willing to do as a society to protect those who are most vulnerable? What are we willing to do as Christians to support those who are most vulnerable among us? We have been called to freedom. But we are not to use our freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but rather 'through love serve one another." Love not only seeks to restore a erring brother, but LOVE SUPPORTS! We are commanded to 'bear one another burdens', that is, loads that are too heavy for one person to bear. Those who are spiritually weak need others to come along side them to help shoulder their load. Those with financial burdens need others to respond out of love and help manage their debt. Those who are destitute or grieving over loss need comfort and support. But why do we fail to help shoulder heavy loads of others. It may be that we feel we are overloaded ourselves, so let other help. But it could be that we think that it is beneath us to help or when we compare ourselves to others, we think we are doing more than enough. Besides, we are concerned that by helping we might be enabling the person to remain weak and needy. Paul tempers his command to bear one another's burdens with the command to carry one's own load. God has given to each of us our own knapsack to carry. We can't expect others to do for us what we can do for ourselves. So we need to help overburdened Christians, not lazy ones. And we do so out of love! When we bear one another burdens we fulfill the law of Christ, which is the law of LOVE! We do so with a love that supports without enabling!
