The title of the sermon today is Tragedy and the Need for Conversion. El título del sermón hoy es La Tragedia y la Necesidad de Conversión. Or those 18 on whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them, Do you think that they were worse offenders than all others who live in Jerusalem? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Amen. Today we look at the theology of tragedy through the stories of the Galilean killed by Pilate and those who died when the Tower of Siloam fell. These events make us ask why suffering happens and how does suffering relate to God's judgment. There were some presence at that very time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. We don't know much, beloved, about this event since no other historical or biblical sources mentions it. All we have is what The Apostle Luke tells us that Jesus said. Some Galileans had traveled to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices at the temple, and while they were sacrificing, Pilate, for reasons unknown, ordered their execution. And these men were killed at the very temple, and their blood was mixed with their sacrifices to God. What's surprising about this account is how the people who told Jesus about it reacted. They did not focus on Pilate's cruelty or injustice. Look what he did. We can't believe this. I would suggest to you even today it's tempting to think that when disaster strikes others, it must be because of their sin, that they are just reaping what they have sown. Some even use the word karma, which is a Middle Eastern blasphemy. Oh, that's just karma that happened. He got away with something over here, but karma caught him over there. Have you ever heard that phrase before, this idea that, That if you behave a certain way, something bad has to happen, but we don't see our own things that we do that are wrong by which something bad should happen to us. Now, if we say bad thing happens to all people because all people are bad, that might be a different story. We see a similar reaction to this idea in the book of Acts when Paul was bitten by a venomous snake on the island of Malta. When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, no doubt this man is a murderer, though he has escaped from the sea. Justice has not allowed him to live. Do you hear it? He must be a bad person if the snake bit him. He must have done something terrible. He was a murderer. He was lost at sea, and somehow he made it to land, and he thought he was safe from God, but he threw in the wood, and the snake jumps out, and he must be a murderer, the worst thing that a man can be in their thinking, because God killed him here on land. He thought he was safe, but he wasn't safe. Pero cuando Pablo recogió una brazada de leña y la echó al fuego, una víbora salió huyendo del calor y se le prendió en la mano. Endureza nuestros corazones. But Jesus challenges this thinking. Instead of seeing others suffering as proof of their guilt, he calls us to look at our own hearts and realize that we too are sinners deserving of judgment. Only when we grasp this truth Can we come to Christ as our Lord and Savior and find refuge from the coming wrath that will surely be poured out on all unrepentant flesh? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Meaning in the final judgment of God, the eternal judgment of God. Jesus answered, it was not that this man sinned or his parents sinned, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. It had nothing to do with sin. It was that God was going to restore sight to this man. So he was born blind for this time, for this moment, that God would be glorified. Do you see the difference in that thinking? So Israel believed the so-called good people were not supposed to suffer, only bad people did. And the problem with this system of belief is that the Bible clearly teaches that there are no good people living on earth, only sinners in need of grace. So in our passage, Jesus refutes the idea of good people never suffering. He clearly teaches that no one is saved without genuine conversion. And he also teaches that all unconverted flesh will perish. Consider his words. I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Do you believe that, beloved? I'm going to ask you again. Do you believe that, beloved? Do you look at your neighbor or your friends or the people you work with and say, unless they repent, they will perish in hell? And does that bother you enough to speak the gospel? Not to be a good person in front of them, not to show them just love and kindness, because that will not make a difference. but to speak the name of Jesus Christ boldly and unashamed because unless they repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ, they will perish forever.
