A Baptist View of the Covenants, Part 9

THE BIBLICAL COVENANTS are God's constant reminder that He has determined to have a personal relationship with those He has chosen from among fallen humanity, not because of anything we have done, but solely through an act of His sovereign grace. Historically speaking, one of the greatest contributions of the Reformation was its richly developed covenant theology. But because the notion of a continuity of God's covenant from the Old Testament into the New was so often used to justify infant baptism, many Baptists, unaware of the distinct covenant theology of their Baptist forefathers, departed from covenant theology altogether as dispensationalism came into vogue. The result is that today, most Baptists have little awareness of their rich covenantal heritage.

THE PURPOSE OF THESE MESSAGES is respectfully to show the superiority of historic, Baptist covenant theology over both dispensationalism and Presbyterian covenant theology, in explaining the record of Scripture. These messages were inspired by and taken from our study of the book of Hebrews. Two areas of particular focus in this series are (1) the dual nature of God's covenant with Abraham, regarding both his physical and spiritual descendants, and (2) the newness of the new covenant as presented in the book of Hebrews.

A SYLLABUS, containing message outlines, some of the resources used, a visualized New Covenant chart, and recommendations for further study, is attached as a .pdf file.
