In view of David's immense popularity, Saul could not stall forever in fulfilling his promise to give his daughter in marriage to the man who killed Goliath. Nevertheless, he added a further condition (that David had to fight the battles of the Lord) in the hope that, having failed to kill David with his own hand, he might deliver him into the hand of the Philistines.
