The Church Is Built Upon the Apostles

The New Testament teaches us that the church is built upon both a primary and a secondary foundation. The principle foundation of the church is the Person and Finished Work of Jesus Christ. But in a secondary manner, the church is built upon the authority of the Apostles, both their doctrine and their authoritative traditions. And it is this authority that Jesus was speaking of when He gave Peter and the rest of His Apostles the keys of the kingdom. There are several questions that emerge from our Lord's statement which we seek to answer in this sermon:

1. Was Peter alone given the keys of the kingdom?
2. What are the keys of the kingdom?
3. What was unique about Peter's ownership of the keys of the kingdom?
4. Who has the keys of the kingdom now?
