In 1643 the governments and national churches of England, Scotland and Ireland covenanted together to follow the Lord in the Solemn League and Covenant.

A wicked king later declared that document to be unlawful and persecuted the conscientious Christians who continued to uphold their covenanted obligations. Thousands of them were exterminated. They were called 'Covenanters'.

When the persecution ended, a remnant of Covenanters refused to accept the new governmental and ecclesiastical situation known as the Revolution Settlement because it did not acknowledge the Solemn League and Covenant. This remnant founded the Reformed Presbyterian Church.
