18 The Fruit of the Good Soil
Series Mark
The purpose of this parable is to explain to the disciples what happens to the gospen when it goes out. When the gospel is preached, the heart into which the gospel is directed is either going to be bad soil or good soil. A Bad soil heart is going to respond one way to the gospel and a good soil heart is going to respond another way. The gospel affects people differently.
The parable implies there is one field. All of the soils are found in the same field. The good soil could be right next to the bad soil.
There is only one seed: there is only one gospel. The same gospel is to be scattered everywehre. There is not a different seed for different areas.
What happens to the seed on bad soil? How does the word of God get sown into soil that does not produce fruit?
- The first thing that happens in the bad soil is that the seed gets snatched away.
- The second thing that happens in the bad soil is that the seedling is burned up.
- The third thing that happens in bad soil is that the seedling gets choked out.
The definition of the good soil is "the ones who first hear the word, and second accept it, and third bear fruit, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold."
