Daniel 9, 26, the first portion
says, and after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut
off and not for himself. This is one of the most impressive
proofs for the divine origin and authorship of the Bible.
And of course, if there is evidence of divine authorship of the Bible,
then that is important evidence for the existence of God, and
more specifically, evidence for the existence of the God of the
Bible. Daniel 9.26 is part of the 70 weeks prophecy given by
the angel Gabriel to the prophet Daniel. It begins in Daniel 9.24
saying, 70 weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy
holy city to finish the transgression and to make an end of sins and
to make reconciliation for iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness
and to seal up the vision and prophecy and to anoint the most
holy. Some of you may recall we went
verse by verse through Daniel and studied this passage. The
70 weeks refers to weeks of years. One week is seven years. The
Bible itself provides this information in the first mention of the word
week, which is found in Genesis 29, 27, where Jacob is agreeing
to work for a man named Laban in exchange for the right to
marry Laban's niece, whose name is Rachel. and we won't get into
all the emotional mess involved in these relationships, but it's
simply important for this discussion to note that Jacob had served
seven years, and then in Genesis 29, 27, Laban says, fulfill her
week, referring to Rachel, and we will give thee this also for
the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other
years. So right there, a week is equated
to seven years. The next verse begins, and Jacob
did so and fulfilled her week. And then in verse 30 says, and
served with him yet seven other years. So in two different places
in that passage, it's established that in the context of discussions
of years, one week is seven years. And with that information, we
read Daniel 9.25. Know therefore and understand
that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and
to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah, the Prince, shall be seven weeks,
and threescore and two weeks. The street shall be built again,
and the wall, even in troubleous times. Now, you can do your own
research to check the following information, and you can also
listen to our expository study on the text. But the historical
facts show, simply, that the commandment to build Jerusalem,
referred to here, was given by Artaxerxes Longimanus on the
first day of the Jewish month of Nisan in the year 445 BC.
So we establish that date and then read the next verse, Daniel
9, 26, which we started with. And after three score and two
weeks shall Messiah be cut off. 69 weeks of years is 483 years. Now we have to follow the lunar
based calendar of 360 day years in order to follow this prophecy
accurately, so we add up the total days and count. 483 times
360. and that comes up to 173,880
days. Now you can do this yourself,
or you can take my word for it, or both, but counting from Nissan
1445 BC, 173,880 days later, you land on the very year in the month Nisan that Jesus
was crucified. By our calendar, 32 AD, we don't
have time to go into all the calendar issues. But it just
so happens that on that day, Jesus fulfilled Zechariah 9-9
by arriving in Jerusalem on an ass to be rejected and crucified. on Nisan 14, 32 AD. Now we'll continue with this
in our next Evidence for God devotional, but I hope that I
don't have to tell you how amazing this prophecy is. But it demonstrates
that our omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient God, as we've described
in our previous six devotionals, has left incredible evidence
for his existence. He's left incredible evidence
of his power and of his glory. If we just have eyes to see and
ears to hear, as Jesus said in his prayer, for thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Continue listening, continue
growing in your faith in not just some God, but the God of
the Bible we find right here in our King James Bible.
