Foundations of Baptism #1

72

#1: WHY DO WE BAPTIZE? (Matthew 28:18-20)

I: Because Jesus commanded it (vv. 18,19a)

II: Because it is a God-ordained means of making disciples (vv. 19, 20)

III: Because it marks people as Christ's disciples (v. 19)
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

A: It marks out disciples: It marks someone out as belonging to Jesus Christ. Someone who has been baptized should be a disciple of Christ. The assumption in the great commission is that someone comes to Christ, is baptized, and then becomes a life-long disciplined learner. Baptism signifies the reality that should be there, not necessary what is.

B: It marks people out a Christ's name-bearers

C: It signifies cleansing (Psalm 24:3-5)

#2: WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED (Luke 18:15, 16; Acts 2:38-39)
I: Believers …

II: … and their Children
