Welcome to Joshua study number 19. 51 verses, but most of them are just a few words, names of cities and towns. So we're going to make our way through this chapter, Lord willing, and the church don't rise. And we'll review the inheritances of Simeon Zebulun Issachar Asher Naphtali and Dan and then at the end we'll see a special inheritance given to Joshua himself and We'll do a lot of reading to cover these 51 verses while making comments along the way as you can tell my voice isn't top-notch, but With the cold weather and things going around I do the best I can just keep on keeping on with the help of coffee So you'll forgive me if I sip on that a number of times As we study and begin with the word of prayer Father we thank you Lord for this book And so much to glean even from these chapters with lists of cities and towns and villages. And we just thank you for helping us to understand it. The tools that you've given us are amazing. This generation has the least amount of excuse of any generation that's ever lived for not knowing the Bible, especially those of us here in America. Bibles all over the place, King James Bibles, and tools to help us. And most of all, the Holy Spirit, we thank you for your help as you guide and teach us. In Jesus' name, amen. So, let's jump right in with verse one, and the second lot came forth to Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon, according to their families, and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah. And that'll be explained again in verse nine, so let's continue. As I said, a lot of these verses are just three or four names. So let's read verses two through eight. And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, or Sheba, and Moladah. Verse three, and Hazarshua, and Bela, and Azim. Verse four, and El-Tolad, and Bethul, and Hormah. 5. And Ziklag, and Beth-Markobath, and Hazarsusa. 6. And Beth-Lebeoth, and Cheruhen, thirteen cities in their villages. 7. Ein, Riman, and Ether, and Eshen, four cities in their villages. verse eight, and all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalethbir, Rameth of the south. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. And we've pointed out that we believe we should read every word of God, and as a teacher I'll make comments as I see fit, and as time permits. And we'll leave it to you to go get a map my favorite I have a Ruckman reference Bible that is giant print huge see how big it is and We're breaking our standard practice We don't usually show pictures of things and such but this gives you an idea and the nice big maps you can get if you bind the hardback large print Ruckman reference Bible and I don't know how much I paid for it. I've had it for a little while, but it's just something I just love this thing. Of course, I always have to tell everybody, I don't agree with every single thing the notes say, but 99 out of 100 things in there are just right on, and it's a great resource. But you have to take care of getting your own copy of that. or other maps that are accurate. You gotta be careful. The maps aren't infallible in your Bible, and you have to be careful to make sure that they are good maps. But that shows the basic border outlines as prescribed here in the book of Joshua. And Simeon's inheritance was connected with Judah's, as explained in verse nine. Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon. For the part of the children of Judah was too much for them. Therefore, the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them. On the map, you'll see it's right on the southern area of Judah that Simeon fits in. And so when the kingdom was divided after the death of Solomon, the reality was that the large portion of the kingdom of the larger portion of the people of the tribe of Simeon remained with Judah, or made their way back to Judah eventually, along with Benjamin and Levi that we talked about before. So that leads us now to the inheritance of Zebulun, beginning verse 10. And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun, according to their families, and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid. Now, Sarid's location is debated, but it's believed to be near Nazareth, the village that would later become the hometown of Jesus. Verse 11 then says, And the border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneim. Verse 12, and turned from Syreed eastward toward the sun rising, unto the border of Kisloth-Tabor, and then goeth out to Daburath, and goeth up to Jephia, or Jephia. Verse 13, and from thence passeth on along on the east of Githah-Hephir, to Itah-Kazin, and goeth out to Rimon-Methoar, I'm sorry, Rimon-Methoar, to Neah. Verse 14, and the border compasseth it on the north side to Hanathon, and the outgoings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthahel. Verse 15, and Kattath, and Nahalal, and Shimron, and Edalah, and Bethlehem, 12 cities with their villages. So Zebulon's borders went from the area of Nazareth, Jesus' hometown where he grew up, and included Bethlehem, his birthplace, which is in and part of or near Judah's inheritance. It's all interesting, but we must continue. Verse 16, this is the inheritance of the children of Zebulon according to their families, these cities with their villages. Now we come to the inheritance of Issachar. And I would suggest you memorize the tribes of Israel. Jenny and I include that as part of our memory work. And that helps you in your familiarity as you read through these things. Verse 17, and the fourth lot came out to Issachar for the children of Issachar according to their families. Verse 18, and their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesiloth, and Shunem. Verse 19, and Hatharim, and Shion, and Anaharath. Verse 20, and Rabith, and Kishon, and Abaz. And verse 21, and Rimeth, and Inganim, and Inhadah, and Beth-paziz. Of course, those prefixes, Beth, house of, and en, E-N, is spring or fount of whatever follows. Just good information, helps you understand the names. And verse 22, and the coast reacheth to Tabor and Shehazama and Beth-shemesh, and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan. 16 cities with their villages. Verse 23, this is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities, and their villages. And so that brings us to Asher. Verse 24, and the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families. Verse 25, and their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Biten, and Akshath. in verse 26, and Alamelech, and Amad, and Mishiel, and reacheth to Carmel, westward, and to Shihur-Libnath. A couple of things to note there in those verses. Alamelech has no connection to Malech, thankfully, but you might think that from the sound of it. But the name Alamelech is thought to believe, believed to be defined as the king's oak. But Hitchcock's Bible names defines it as God is king. It's interesting to note that oak is mentioned 14 times, not counting this mention I'm making here. in the Bible, but it represents strength, or the strength of God, which might explain Hitchcock's definition. And you might have noticed there, Carmel, not Caramel, which I love, Carmel. And a lot of hospitals are named Carmel, and that's a biblical connection, even though a lot of them are Catholic hospitals. But biblically, you'll recognize Carmel as being the home of Nabal, who insulted David and his men. And when he was told about how foolish he acted and the trouble he was in by his wife, Abigail, he died of heart failure. And then of course that means that Carmel was the home of Abigail who after Nabal's death she was widow for a few hours and David took her in as his wife Then we'll see Carmel connected to Elijah and Elisha among other connections but Asher's borders are then described beginning verse 27 and Turneth toward the sun rising to Beth Dagon and and reacheth to Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el, toward the north side of Beth-imek, and Niel, and goeth out to Kabul on the left hand. Verse 28, and Hebron, and Rehob, and Haman, and Cana, even unto Zion. Of course, Beth-dagon means house of Dagon, the devil god of the Philistines. And Zidon was a city of Zydonians, but they were also known as Phoenicians. And just to make the connections there, the Phoenicians are wrongly credited with originating the alphabet. The original alphabet was actually an alephbet based on the primitive form of Hebrew. No matter what you've read, no matter what your school teaches, the linguist will eventually catch up to the Bible on that matter. But when you try to get your kids hooked on phonics, most of you homeschoolers are familiar with that, it's from the same root. It comes from the Phoenician name, phonics, because they're credited with the alphabet. Small world, huh? And with that, we close out the inheritance of Asher, beginning verse 29, and then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre, and the coast turneth to Hosah, and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Aqzib. Verse 30, Uma also and Ephek and Rehob, 20 and two cities with their villages, And verse 31, this is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher, according to their families, these cities with their villages. Now Asher in the New Testament, Luke 2.36 is called Aser, spelled with an S. Then you'll see in medieval times it was spelled A-S-C-E-R or A-C-E-R, Aser. So it's come down to us in the nickname of Ace, for young men named Asher. Now there are some people called Ace for other reasons, but if they're Jewish and named Asher and called Ace, that's why. So with that, now we come to the inheritance for the tribe of Naphtali. As verse 32 says, the sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, even for the children of Naphtali according to their families. Verse 33, and their coast was from, he left from Alon to Zananim. There's that name again. And Adami, Nekeb, and Jabneel unto Lekum. And the outgoings thereof were at Jordan. So there's another city of the giants, Zananim. Verse 34, and then the coast turneth westward to Asnoth-Tabor, and goeth out from thence to Hukkuk, and reacheth to Zebulun on the south side, and reacheth to Asher on the west side, and to Judah upon Jordan toward the sun rising the west. I mean, sorry, the east. The sun rising, not sun setting. Sun rises in the east, sets in the west. So again, look for a good map for the visual, and we'll just leave it there and go on to verse 35. And the fenced cities are Zidim, Zur, and Hamath, Rakath, and Chinareth. Verse 36, and Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor. Verse 37, and Kedesh, and Edrei, and Inhazor. And then verse 38, and Iron, I-R-O-N, and Migdalel, Horem, and Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh, 19 cities with their villages. Now the town called Iron might also have been known by the locals as Iron Town, or by the name of the small town east of where I grew up along the Ohio River called Ironton. That's how I kind of remember some of these names that kind of association Legitimate or not verse 39. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families the cities and their villages And so now we come to last but not least the tribe of Dan and their inheritance and Verse 40, and the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families. Verse 41, and the coast of their inheritance was Zorah and Eshtel and Ur-Shemesh. Verse 42, and Sheol-Abin and Ajalon and Jethla. Verse 43, and Elan and Thimnathah and Ekron. Now, I'm not sure where Elon Musk, the wealthiest man on Earth in the year 2025, got his name, but it shows up here, and a total of seven times in the Bible. First mentioned is Genesis 26-34, and that along with Genesis 36-2 is referring to a man named Elon the Hittite. So he would have been an ancestor and blood relative of Uriah the Hittite. And there's even a family among the tribe of Zebulun then called the Elanites later in Numbers 26, 26. And one of the judges of Israel mentioned in Judges 12, 11, and 12 is named Elon the Zebulunite. But for the record, as far as we know, Elon Musk is South African and evidently has no Jewish DNA. But that's interesting stuff, and it helps you to remember some of these names. We continue, verse 44. And Al-Tiqa and Gibathon and Baalath, verse 45. And Jehud and Bene-Barak and Gath-Ramon, verse 46. And Mi-Jarqon and Rakon with the border before Jaffo, And verse 47, and the coast of the children of Dan, meaning coast and borders and synonyms, went out too little for them. Therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem. That's identified with Laish and later is called Dan as we'll see. And took it and smote it with the edge of the sword and possessed it and dwelt therein and called Leshem Dan, after the name of Dan their father. Verse 48, this is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan, according to their families, these cities with their villages. So Dan was no joke as far as being a tribe of warriors. The Canaanites were no joke. So for them to go in and clean house the way they did, that's pretty impressive. Now, Dan itself is an interesting tribe to study. We've mentioned some of this in the past, but dating or going back to Genesis 49, 17, Jacob, the patriarch of Israel, says that Dan, quote, shall be a serpent by the way. Being called a serpent isn't normally a good thing. You know, the serpent, on the pole That the children of Israel looked at to be healed it we read about that in numbers It represents sin and then Jesus in John 3 makes reference to that comparing that to him being lifted up on the cross where he became sin for us and It also speaks of Dan throwing the rider backward off the horse so Those kind of facts, and especially going to judges, we're gonna see Dan, as a tribe, goes into deep, dark idolatry. Fast forward to Revelation 7, Dan's not mentioned among the tribes. We all have our opinions and suspicions of why that is, but that, my friends, is a real mystery. I don't think we'll know for sure until it's all said and done and we get the full, Knowledge that comes with being glorified after the rapture But just don't fall for this British Israelism or black Hebrew nonsense claiming that Dan became the Danish Danes, you know Or that they settled in Ireland and that explains the well-known song old Danny boy I've never heard all that this nonsense So with that, we close with the special inheritance given to Joshua there in 4950, when they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts. The children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua, the son of Nun among them. Verse 50, according to the word of the Lord, they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-sira in Mount Ephraim. and he built the city and dwelt therein and that is where Joshua was buried and I believe his grave is empty according to the events at the resurrection of Jesus Christ as described for us in Matthew 27 51 to 53 and behold the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom the earth did quake and the rocks rent and the graves were opened and many bodies of the Saints which slept arose and came out of the graves after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared unto many and when it says many of the bodies of the Saints which slept arose I just think it's saying many it doesn't mean only some doesn't say that there were many Saints and And they were resurrected. That's my personal conviction about that. You don't have to believe that. But real soon, as I said, we'll find out which interpretation about these things are correct. But it's just interesting you think about it. They know where the cave of Machpelah is, where Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah, they're all buried there. But you would think there'd be some search to find those bones, just knowing men and mankind, but none of them turn up. They claim to have an idea where King David was buried, but no bones. And of course, Joshua, no bones. Of course, you'll never find the bones of Jesus because he rose from the tomb after three days and ascended to heaven 2,000 years ago. These should still be in the grave, except for Matthew 27, 51 to 53. We'll leave you with that as we close out verse 51. These are the inheritances which Eliezer the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided for an inheritance by Lot in Shiloh. before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country. You picture the tabernacle is up and running and the priesthood is there and in front of that tabernacle, all these heads of the tribes have gathered and they're dividing the land. Jacob had prophesied in Genesis 49 10 the scepter shall not depart from Judah nor a lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh come and unto him shall the gathering of the people be So they're waiting on Shiloh at this point They have come into the promised land and as they divide it out They divide it in a place that they've called Shiloh where that tabernacle stands and the tabernacle is a picture of Jesus Christ if you haven't studied that out you should and so It's of note that that's where Israel gathers and divides the land in Shiloh in front of that tabernacle that represents Shiloh the Messiah and It says there The promise is the scepters will not depart from Judah. There haven't been any kings since the Babylonian captivity, and all of them up to that point were from Judah. The scepter still belongs to Judah. Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He came but was despised and rejected in fulfillment of Isaiah 53, but he will return and be the next and final king Shiloh has come, was rejected, ascended to heaven after his resurrection, will return, and soon Shiloh will reign.
