Paul began this section with a direct warning against the false teaching that tempted the Colossians. In this context the term "philosophy" referred not to the rational pursuit of truth, but to occult practices focused on discerning cosmic mysteries and powers. Paul gave a stunning rebuttal of the false teachers who encouraged submission to the "elemental spirits" (verse 8) as a means of overcoming fears of inadequacy before God.
