The 3 Appearings of the Mediator

53

I: THE DEATH OF THE MEDIATOR (vv. 15-22)

The basis of Christ’s mediatiorial position: His death (v. 15a)

The benefits received: Forgiveness of transgressions & eternal inheritance (v.15b)

The will or testament (vv. 16-22) Matt. 26:28

II: THE 3 APPEARINGS OF THE MEDIATOR (vv. 23-28)

In the chronological order of the Day of Atonement:

1: The 1st Appearing of the mediator (vv. 26b, 28a) The mediator 1st appeared to offer the sacrifice at the altar. The H.P. would kill the goat in front of the altar in the presence of the people.

2: The 2nd Appearing of the mediator (vv. 23-26a ) After the Jewish H.P. appeared and offered the goat on the altar, he would take the blood of the goat and enter the Holy place to appear in the presence of God.

Lev. 16:16 “Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins.”

The quiet argument (6:19-20)

3: The 3rd Appearing of the mediator (vv. 27,28) After the priest had offered the blood, if the blood was accepted and atonement made, he would finally emerge from the tabernacle and appear to the people a 2nd time.

Lev. 16:17 … he (the High Priest) comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

“How glorious he was when the people gathered around him as he came out of the sanctuary; like the morning star among clouds, like the moon when it is full, like the sun shining, like the rainbow gleaming.”
Joshua Ben Sira, from the eulogy for Simon the Just
