Proverbs 21.4 says, An high look
and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked is sin. We previously
discussed the sin of an high look, and it is really the result
of the second sin listed here, a proud heart. These sins are
inseparably linked, but they're not the same. A high look is
just one of the consequences of a proud heart. That high look
we talked about in the previous devotional basically puts a face
on the sin of a proud heart. And then, the more you learn
about the person with a high look, the more outward evidence
you find of the proud heart. Of course, that confirms what
Jesus said in places like Matthew 15-18, but those things which
proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and they
defile the man. People with a proud heart are
just difficult to get along with. It doesn't mean they're mean
all the time, it just means there's so much trouble that follows
them. Everything is about them. They should just walk around
with a t-shirt on that says ME, all caps bold with an exclamation
mark. And the reality is that they're
their own worst enemy. When we put ourselves first,
we are doing the exact opposite of what the Lord Jesus did and
taught us to do. Matthew 20, 28 says, even as
the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister
and to give his life as a ransom for many. We don't give our lives
as a ransom for sinners as Jesus did, but we are sinners who have
been ransomed. So, therefore, we should dedicate
our lives to serving God by serving others. A Christian with pride
is a contradiction. We'll see this juxtaposition
later on in Proverbs 28, 25 that says, he that is of a proud heart
stirreth up strife, but he that putteth his trust in the Lord
shall be made fat. Fat here is a good thing. It
means blessed by God. You want a life of self-inflicted
strife and need? or do you want a life with the
Lord's wisdom, guidance, and blessing? I've always taught
my children and anyone who'll listen, life's hard enough. Don't
make more trouble for yourself. It all comes down to your willingness
to live with a humble heart, thinking much of Jesus and thinking
very little of yourself. As John the Baptist said, he
must increase, but I must decrease, John 3.30. Why? Because God is thinking about
you and he will take care of you if you will take care to
live your life according to his will as you walk in the spirit
according to his word. Paul expressed this truth with
divinely inspired words in Ephesians 6.6, not with eye service as
men pleasers, but as the servants of Christ doing the will of God
from the heart. Pride leads you away from God. Psalm 10 verse 4 says, The wicked,
through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God. God
is not in all his thoughts. Why? Because they're just thinking
about themselves all the time. And when you think of pride,
you should think of Lucifer. In his fall, Lucifer became known
as Satan. And when you read about him addressed
as the spirit behind the King of Babylon in Isaiah 14, four
through 15, and addressed as the spirit behind the Prince
of Tyrus in Ezekiel 28, one through 10, you see that Lucifer's downfall
was his pride. But when you think of humility,
you think of Jesus. It's described in Philippians
2, 2 through 11, which you can read in full on your own since
we're out of time or running out of time here, but I'll read
Philippians 2, 5 through 7, which says, let this mind be in you,
which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God,
thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself
of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant. and
was made in the likeness of men. Jesus put off his heavenly glory
to walk as a man among men. And now his name is above all
names. And in the same manner, We repeat
the words of 1 Peter 5, 6. Humble yourselves, therefore,
under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due
time. That's the proper order of things. Amen.
