Hey, hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning, we are at Joshua chapter 14, verses 6 through 15. We haven't talked about Caleb in a while. We're gonna find out how he comes back in the story. Actually, it's been, if we look at it, it's been like 40 years since we've talked about Caleb, or since Caleb's been in the story. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll talk about what Caleb gets here. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. Lord, it's a blessing that every day we get to come together and read your word. And we pray that as we do so this morning, that you would please help us, teach us your ways, let us walk in your paths. We need your spirit to be our instructor and to especially lead us and apply this word to our lives. In Jesus' name, amen. All right, here we go. Joshua, Joshua chapter 14, beginning at verse six. Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kinezite said to him, You know the word which the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, concerning you and me in Kadesh Barnea. I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. Nevertheless, my brethren who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I wholly followed the Lord with the Lord my God. So Moses swore on that day, saying, Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children's forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God. And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, and he hath said, These forty-five years ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel was wandering in the wilderness, and now here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am strong this day, as on the day that Moses sent me, just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. Now therefore give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day. For you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said." And Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, as an inheritance. Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, the Kinezite, to this day, because he fully followed the Lord God of Israel. And the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjoth Arba. Arbo was the greatest man among the Anakim. Then the land had rest from war. Well, we need to ask ourselves our three questions. A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do? So A, what's this about? Well, this is Caleb. He's 85 years old, right? This guy is old. He's coming and he's not the young guy that he was. He was 40 years old in the wilderness. He was sent as one of the spies. Each tribe sent one spy. 10 of them come back, right? The vast majority come back and they say, we can't take the land. They're like giants. And we're like grasshoppers squashed like bugs. But Caleb believed God. Caleb believed God. Even though the rest of them went away, here's old man Caleb talking to old man Joshua, the two spies who did listen. And as Matthew Henry says, it's right for the elderly to get the first pick. There's a showing honor. Caleb's one of those who led by faith, and he deserves the honor, and so he gets the first pick. And so he says, hey, remember what Moses promised me. Remember the story, right? You know this, wow, Joshua, right? We went, we spied, I came back and I said what was in my heart, that the Lord could do this. So now give me the land as the inheritance that God promised. And so, I think that that's what this is about. Now, it's interesting that he asks for Kiriath Arba, or Hebron, Hebron Hebron and It's interesting though. He doesn't ask for an easy city that he's able to take care of and we're gonna talk about in a little bit the story behind this but one thing I just want to point out is in the parentheses here at the very end of verse 15 Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim Caleb decides, I want to go to war against those giants they said we couldn't beat. Right, that's I think that's one of the cool parts of this story. Alright, so A, what's this about? This is about Caleb being allotted the land, right, getting first pick. And so B, what's the best verse? Well, I have verse 14, I've got a whole bunch underlined in my Bible for this section, but I think verse 14 is really good. Now, if I'm being honest with you, and I showed you my Bible, I have verses, end of verse 7 underlined, I have verse 8 underlined, verse 9 underlined, part of verse 10 underlined, part of 11 underlined, I have part of 12 underlined. I think this is an amazing story. I love this part of the Bible. Let's just go ahead and talk about seek calling. What are we called to do? You know, it's not a popular thing to go and to trust the Lord, even against what seem like insurmountable odds. But the Lord can do amazing things. When the Holy Spirit shows up, and we trust in His promises, the Lord can do amazing things. And so this takes a certain amount of faithful courage, a courage that is from faith, because Caleb had it in his heart. He knew that God's promises were sure, that God was strong enough to do this, and that they could accomplish it. It didn't matter if they were giants. God had made a promise. And if one of them was going to war, a hundred of his enemies would run away, and Caleb trusted God. I think this is a type of faith that moves mountains that Jesus is talking about. So do we have faith? There may be what seems like humanly impossible odds, But do we trust the Lord? Do we pray, your will be done? Are we satisfied with just small prayers? One of my favorite Psalms, my kids love to sing Psalm 117. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, all you nations. Psalm 17 sounds like it was written by, one of my professors said, it sounds like it was written by a kindergartner. If it was the prayer of a kindergartner, God, please let all the nations come worship you. Please let all the peoples praise you. I think that's what God's doing here, right? All the nations could be evangelized. All the peoples could praise Him. Maybe our prayers and our vision is too small. The Lord can do remarkable things. Do we have faith to follow after Him? Let's pray. God, we don't live in la-la land. We know that everything doesn't go our way. We know, if we've read through this book before, and if we remember a few chapters earlier, Lord, it's not going to go perfect all the time. But Father, we pray that we would never give up on you. Lord, we pray that we would be faithful people, people filled with faith. And because of our faith in you, Lord, we would believe that you can do amazing things. And so, Father, we pray that we would walk by faith and not by sight. We pray, Lord, that you would let mountains be moved in our eyes, in our lives. Lord, we pray that you would please let the nations praise you. Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. May the Lord bless you. May you walk by faith and not by sight as you rest in Jesus Christ, your hope for today and forever. I'll see you next time. Bye.
