The root of anger is three-fold: 1) Wrong interpretation of suffering, 2) pride, and 3) selfishness. The whole book of James is designed to correct those three problems. After correcting #1 in the first 18 verses of chapter 1, verses 19-20 introduce the body of the book which focuses on replacing pride and selfishness with humility and love. Anger is a reaction against evil that is supposed to increase righteousness. But human anger does the opposite – it increases sin. So get rid of it by being quick to listen and slow to speak.
