Greetings, everybody. Welcome to our Christmas Eve service. We're going to have a few surprises that may not be on the list, but oh well, right? I want to read a little something from Matthew chapter 1, and that'll kind of take us into what we're going to do next. So all the generations from Abraham to David for 14 generations. And from David to the deportation to Babylon, 14 generations. And from the deportation to Babylon to Christ, 14 generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. as a tall, standing angel rose and walked toward the front of the chapel. There was a buzz among the cadets. He was a living legend. He clearly strove. I've been asked to speak to you today about what I've learned throughout my career. Foremost is this. We are servants of the Most High God. This lesson I learned not during my days here at the Academy, but from a human being, a girl. I had been summoned before God to be briefed on a new mission. He told me, Gabriel, you have a most delicate assignment. I'm sending my son to redeem the earth. To do this, he must become a human himself. Your mission is to announce this plan to the young woman I have chosen to be his mother. Her name is Mary. She lives in the village of Nazareth in Galilee. She is betrothed to be married. That means she is already considered a wife, though she is living at home until the final ceremonies a few months from now. And Gabriel. She is a herd. He went on to describe my role and briefed me on the various contingencies, concluding with these words, Gabriel, by all means, be gentle. I arrived one spring morning as Mary was climbing the path from the well and came to where I was sitting on a large boulder. She's only a child, I thought, when I first saw her, only 12 or 13. Be dropped at that age? But such was the customs of that place, and I know that the Father knows what He's doing. As she approached... Greetings, Mary. Hail, you are highly favored. The Lord is with you. I motioned for her to sit. She carefully removed a full water jug from her head and sat down, then eased herself onto the far end of the rock. Mary, don't be afraid. You have found favor with God. You will conceive in your womb and bear a son. You are to name him Jesus. Your son will become a great man. He will be called the son of the Most High God. What's more, the Lord God will give him the throne of David, his ancestor, and he will reign as Messiah over Israel forever. Of his kingdom and reign there will be no end. The message shocked me. I couldn't imagine the impact it must have had on her. She was quiet. And she asked, in her small teenage voice, How did all of this happen, since I'm not yet married? The Holy Spirit will come to you. The power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, your son to be born will be holy. He will be called Amazing. The father was prepared to risk his entire Christ enterprise on this young girl. Her response? Her whim? Her decision? She was to be the mother of God's own son. So young. And now, Mary, your relative, Elizabeth, In her old age, she has conceived a son. Oh, really? Yeah, they call her Barry, but she's already six months pregnant. As I looked at Mary, I saw her smile fade. I couldn't read her thoughts, but could only imagine what she must be thinking. How could she ever explain this to anyone? Who would understand? Who would ever believe her? Her father would be furious. Her mother, deeply hurt. And Joseph. There would be no way. Her dreams of marriage and family vanished in an instant. And the town fathers? Would they want to stone her? I've been given one sentence by the Father with which to respond. Mary, nothing will be impossible with God. Nothing. She was quiet a little longer. She looked at me with clear eyes and said, Here I am. I am the Lord's servant. Let it be done. Let what you have said come to pass. And that is how I met Mary. She taught me what it means to be a servant when it's hard to obey. And there seems to be no hope except God's promise. Mary took the words, for nothing will be impossible with God. And believe them, whenever I struggle with obedience, I think of this young girl who began a service journey with the words, I am the servant, the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be. Let it come. I am the servant. Gabriel, the tall angel, Touched the corner of his eye for a moment in front of the young cadets, and he stepped down and took his seat. Gabriel had learned servanthood from an even greater servant than himself, a young virgin from Napa named Mary. Oh God, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, to Bethlehem Come and behold Him, born the King of angels. He should have known that, with God, this is possible. And he decided to question the angel in disbelief. How can this be? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years. Well, Zechariah, the second verse, voice of Christmas, was silent until after his son was born. He had to go home and try and explain to his wife without being able to talk. because the angel had told him he would not speak until everything came to pass. He had to try and explain to Elizabeth, she'd be having a baby, that he was visited in the holy place by an angel, and he had to do this without a voice. At the time of his sudden circumcision, when it was time to name the child, he had to write it, his name is John. And at that point, he regained his voice. The third voice of Christmas is that of his wife, Elizabeth, the voice of joy. Now, she had a little bit different reaction to the situation. She was also of one of the priestly lines, and she did know of the story of Hannah and the story of Sarah, and she knew she desired to have a child just as they did. When she conceived her son, she said, thus the Lord has done for me, in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach from among the people. She was joyful, she finally would have a child. And not only that, a child dedicated to the service of God. For the first five months, she kept herself hidden away. It probably looked funny for this little lady to be with child. We will see more from the voice of Elizabeth as the story unfolds. And the fourth voice in this first section is the voice of John the Baptist. Now, like that of his father, Zechariah, the first time John tried to speak, he was actually silent. But unlike his father, his message was quite clear to his mother. When Elizabeth was in her six months of pregnancy, Mary came to visit her. They were cousins. Mary had just found out that she was expecting a child. Upon hearing Mary's greeting, Luke 1.41 tells us that the baby leapt in Elizabeth's womb. This was the first time that he would have recognized the Savior, that he would have been preparing the way for the Savior. And this would have been his quiet way of saying, Behold the Lamb of God, as he would say later in the wilderness. Elizabeth, at that time, was filled with the Spirit. The child in her womb had been filled with the Spirit, as the angel had said he would be. And she said to Mary, blessed are you among the people, among the women. Blessed is the fruit of your womb. Elizabeth knew that there was a special baby. And in the womb, John proclaimed that the baby that Mary was carrying was special. These two unborn boys that Gabriel announced to the mixed reactions were God's promise from Malachi to send a forerunner to the Messiah, and God's promise from Genesis 3 that he would send one that would crush the head of the serpent. So, so so so so so so Oh. you um In fields where they lay, they keeping their sheep. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. And they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, fear not, for behold, I bring you good news, a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly, there's with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying, glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace among those with whom he is pleased. When the angel went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened. which the Lord has made known to us. And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the same that had been told them concerning the child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told. But Mary treasured up all of these things, honoring them in her heart. Our next group of voices starts off with the voice, or it should be the voices of praise. Again, we have the angel showing up to greet the shepherds and give them the news that the child is born, the child of God himself has been born. This time, he appears in the night sky. Now, when Moses would go his face shown. How much more in the dark night sky would this angel show, standing in the very presence of God for his service? He doesn't appear alone for long either, because he's joined by a multitude of angels, their voices joined together. His greeting to these shepherds, who are probably a little bit startled out there in the dark, Fear not, I bring you good news of great joy. He told them of the baby born in the city of David, which was Christ the Lord. He was the Messiah. After the announcement of the birth of Christ, the angels all proclaimed glory to God in the highest and peace on earth, goodwill to man. Peace. in a time of Roman oppression, in a time of Roman rule, seemed funny, but the Prince of Peace had definitely come and was on Earth. This amazing scene was for the benefit of our six voices of the Christmas season, the shepherds. The lowly shepherds, the first one to hear about the message of the Christ being born. Shepherds were relative nobodies in Israel, In Genesis, when Joseph moved his family down, he told his father to let Pharaoh know they were keepers of livestock, because being a shepherd was an abomination to Egypt, too. So, the angels didn't take their message to the wealthy. They didn't take their message to the rulers or the religious leaders. They didn't have a message just for a privileged few. The angels went to the shepherds, to the lost and broken of the world, the ones who most needed the message. When the angels departed, the shepherds went to see the things of which they had heard from the angels. They found God's sacrificial lamb and returned to their own flocks, praising God for what they had seen. The seventh voices of the Christmas season came around about two years later, as wise men, following a star, looking for the King of the Jews, the newborn King of the Jews. These men were from east, possibly from Babylon. If they were from Babylon, they would have known of Daniel. They would have known of his friends. They would have known of Nebuchadnezzar. came to his senses and praised the God of Israel. They would have known of Gerias' joy when Daniel survived the lion's den. And they came looking for the king of the Jews. They followed a special star, a star that hasn't been seen since, and a star that wasn't there before. They had knelt before kings, but kneeling before this child, they truly understood adoration. They were the voice of adoration. They stopped by the palace of the reigning king of Israel and asked where the newborn king was. So he called his wise men together. They told him where the baby could be found. And they finally arrived at the house where the family was living. They bestowed on him great gifts. They bestowed on him gold, a symbol of his kingship here on earth. They bestowed on him frankincense, a symbol of his deity. And they gave him myrrh, a preparation spice for his death. Their gifts honored the Creator coming to man, becoming a man, and dying for mankind eventually. The eighth voice was Herod himself, the voice of deception. Now, after he found out there was a new king of the Jews, he said, when you find him, let me know where he is, because I want to go, that I can also worship this child, this newborn king of the Jews. But his plan fell apart, because in a dream, the angel told them not to return to Herod. So they went back home a different way. So Herod had to come up with a second deceitful plan here. He would just kill all the male children under two years old. This plan also failed to kill the king of the Jews, as the angel warned Joseph to take Mary and the child to Egypt for safety. And they slipped through his evil grasp and made it safely to Egypt. I'll give you two minutes. Please stand. And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. As it is written in the law of the Lord, every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord. And to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigs. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel when the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's prime. And he came in the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and he blessed God and said, Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your word. that you have prepared in the presence of all people a life for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.' And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and the rising of the many in Israel. and for a sign that is opposed, and a sword will pierce through your own soul also, so that thoughts from many a heart may be revealed. And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Thaniel of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin. and then as a widow until she was 84. She did not depart from the temple worshiping, nor fasting and praying night and day. And coming up at that very hour, she began to give thanks to God and to speak of Him to So we come to our last grouping of the voices of Christmas. And other than the Christ child himself, we probably come to the central figure at this time. The ninth voice of Christmas. Because it's at this time that Gabriel appeared to Mary. And when he greeted her, he said, Greetings, O favored one. Do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God. Mary was the voice of wonder. She knew she was betrothed or legally bound to wed Joseph. It was all arranged. She also knew what it would take to produce a son. So she asked the angel, how can this be? For I am a virgin. The tone of her question was different than that of Zechariah. It wasn't a challenge, it was an inquiry. She desired to know. She wasn't arguing the point. The answer? The child would be conceived by the Holy Spirit and would be called the Son of God. He also informed her at that time that her cousin, Elizabeth, was expecting a son as well. Mary's response? Let it be done to me. And she went off to visit her cousin. Now Joseph, the tenth voice, is a voice of reason. At first, We know he's betrothed to Mary, but he heard she was pregnant with a son. So in respect to her, he made plans to divorce her and send her away quietly and respectfully. Gabriel made his last appearance for his final message of the first Christmas. Appearing in a dream again, as he did to the wise men, he let Joseph know that he told Mary He let Joseph know all that he told Mary about the son she was carrying. This child would save the people from their sins. And this birth would fulfill Isaiah 7.14, Behold, a virgin will conceive a son, and you shall call his name Immanuel. When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel said, and he took Mary to be his wife. They went together to be counted in Bethlehem, and the child of God was born there in a stable. The voice of peace is Simeon. He's the 11th voice that was listed in the program. Simeon was righteous, devout, he served at the temple, and when Mary and Jesus, after he had been born and when their time of purification had passed, They brought him to be presented at the temple. The Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he saw Israel's salvation. Looking at the child he was holding, he declared that he was ready to depart in peace. He had indeed seen the Savior of Israel. And the twelfth voice is a voice of thanksgiving. There was an old lady at the temple, and she was a prophetess. She was married when she was a virgin and quite young. Her husband died seven years later, and now at age 84, she had been serving in the temple all these years. She was a prophetess. She just stayed at the temple, worshiping, fasting, and praying. When she saw the child, she gave thanks and spoke of Him with those that were waiting, those around her. And they were waiting for the salvation of Israel. She knew, she had looked on the very face of God. Uh, please stand and return your notes to number 235. Low count, low count. Good evening. In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when King Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary the betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Thank you. Well, we come to the very final voice of that first Christmas, the voice of God himself. When the Christ child the very voice of God was crying out in His creation. Prophecies have been fulfilled. Isaiah 14, Behold, a virgin will conceive. Matthew tells us many times that Christ was, indeed, born of a virgin. If Jesus had been made physical in heaven and sent down to earth, He wouldn't have been exactly one of us, and we wouldn't have accepted Him. Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous, who found God's favor, were servants of God, and He could not be born to them. Because if He wasn't born of the Virgin, His deity could have been in question. Jesus was born fully God and fully man. The only acceptable sacrifice that could satisfy God's righteous judgment and pay the penalty for every man that was on earth. Because of the events in Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve rejected God's instruction, all men were deemed sinners and condemned to die as a just punishment for their sins. But the message of Christmas is wrapped up in this one final authoritative voice. God provided the promised head-crusher of the serpent. God provided a revelation to the Gentiles through the glory of Israel, their Messiah, according to what Simeon had proclaimed when he saw the child. God provided an earthly king for David's throne, a heavenly king, the king of kings, and he provided his own son as a payment for the sins. The wise men showed this with the gifts they brought, The final voice of Christmas is explained in Hebrews 1. Long ago, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God's plan of salvation was born in a stable, celebrated by shepherds, wise men, and angels. Immanuel, God with us, came to earth so that those who believe in Him can spend eternity with Him. with one another and with God. For our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. As we read this word today, the Spirit of God speaks in the church and those who have ears to hear, hear that God is not dead. He is living. He is risen. Our Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us, to the end of the age. As we gather together on this Christmas Eve, it's our tradition, it is our joy, to participate in a Christmas communion service. If you are here visiting with us tonight, welcome. Thank you for coming and sharing your Christmas Eve together with the family of God that meets here at First Bible Church. We invite you, if you are a believer, request is that you be a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. As the gospel has been proclaimed tonight through the songs, through the scripture readings, through the message of the Twelve Voices, if your heart is in agreement with that message, that Jesus Christ is the great I AM, that He is the perfect Lamb of God who came to take away the sins of the world, that He died on the cross and rose again after three days, having paid for sins once and for all, If that is the message that you have placed your hope in for eternal life, then you are a part of the Church. Whether you fellowship here on a regular basis or not, we are one in Christ through our union with Him in faith. And so I'd like to ask the congregation to stand. to make your way out of this side on the pew, this side on this side, and then on the far side is another table set up. So please stand and come forward to receive the elements of the bread and the cup. so so so The voice of the Son of God speaks powerfully through the communion table. It was on that last night, before He was betrayed, that He took bread and instituted this commemoration, this memorial of His sacrifice for us. Because in the eating and the drinking with His disciples, that's where closest fellowship is found. And as we are gathered here, we're not only meeting with one another, but we are truly meeting with the Lord Jesus Christ. You don't see Him now, but you love Him. And though you can't see Him now in the flesh, your heart rejoices with great hope. The expectation of being reunited. That's really a big part of this service. It's the anticipation, the looking forward to eating and drinking with Jesus Christ and His Kingdom. You weren't one of the blessed few that got to see the Christ child when He was born, or to hold Him in the temple. or even to listen to Him as He preached in Galilee. You weren't there at the foot of Calvary, but you will be there at the great festival, the great feast, the wedding feast of the Lamb that is to come. We will continue to proclaim the Lord's death and His resurrection through this service until He comes. Reading from 1 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul wrote, I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread. When He had given thanks, He broke it and said, This is My Bible, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way also, he took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. We will close the communion service with a word of prayer. And I believe we have a closing hymn. Bow your heads with me. Father, thank you. Words could never be thanks enough, but we offer them nonetheless for the gift of Jesus Christ, the gift of eternal life, the gift of forgiveness of sins, the gift of redemption, the gift of an inheritance in your kingdom, all because of your great grace. in sending Jesus Christ to be the Savior of the world. Thank you that He is the Savior of all who call upon Him. And may this Christmas season be a time of great joy and hope for all believers, and we abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
