All right. Good evening to you.
Glad to see everyone here this evening. Looking forward to a
wonderful service tonight and a Merry Christmas on behalf of
Grace Baptist Church to each and every one of you. And just
looking forward to what the Lord's going to do. We're going to have
some singing and some scripture reading here in just a little
while and going to have a message and then we'll have the candlelight
time toward the end as well. Thank you to all of our guests
for coming this evening. We do have a gift for each and
every one of our guests and I'll say more about that here in just
a moment. But let's all stand if you will and we are going
to open with a word of prayer and then we will sing page 109
in our hymnal and then you can be seated for the rest of the
remaining time there. So let's bow for a word of prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father we come before you tonight and Lord we
are just so thankful Lord to be in your house. Lord, grateful
to be able to join together and just to celebrate your birth. Lord, we know that you came because
you desired that each and every one of us would be saved. And
you knew that we needed a savior. You knew that Lord, without the
shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin. And Lord, I
thank you for coming, being born of a virgin and the Lord dying
on the cross of Calvary, being raised from the dead three days
later. and you're alive forevermore in heaven. I'm just so thankful,
Lord, for that promise that we have, that if we place our trust
in you, that we can be in heaven with you when we pass from this
life as well. Lord, if there's anyone here
that does not know you as their Savior, I pray they'd come to
know you this evening, be with everything that's going to be
done throughout this service, be with each one that's singing
and each one that's reading. Lord, I pray that everything
will bring honor and glory to your name. And we ask all these
things in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Remain standing if you will. It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song. From angels bending near the
earth to touch their harps of gold. Peace on the earth, goodwill
to man, from heaven's all-gracious King. The world in solemn stillness
lay to hear the angels sing. Still though the cloven skies
they come With peaceful wings unfurl And still their heav'nly
music floats O'er all the weary world Above its sad and lowly
plain, they bend on hovering wing. And heather o'er its babble sounds,
the blessed And he beneath life's crushing
load, whose forms are bending low, who toil alone, a climbing
wave with painful steps and slow. Look now for glad and golden
hours come swiftly on the wing. Oh, rest beside the weary road

for being here this evening. And just a couple of things I
want to mention right off the bat here, just in case I do not
mention them later. And those things are this we
know of course we do not have a nursery provided this evening
and we know that children can make noise and that is okay.
And I saw something not too long ago a person said the sound of
children making noise in church is a whole lot better than no
sound of children in church. Amen. Our country is in a terrible
place and it's because we're not training this next generation.
And I love children being in church. So don't feel awkward
if your child's making a sound or something like that. If you
need to, of course, you could go out to the foyer. That would
be perfectly fine. No one's going to look down on
you for doing that. So make sure you are completely
comfortable this evening. And then also for the candles,
of course, we do have all the candles on the back table. And
it was anyone not able to get a candle and you need a candle.
If you slip your hand up, we'll make sure we get one to you.
Anyone at all? No, I believe everyone has one. What about
a guest card? If you're a first time guest
here, a first time in a long time, and you did not receive
a guest card on your way in, would you please slip up your
hand? You say, I need a guest card and we can get you one of
those. All right. I believe everyone has one of
those as well. That's great. Um, with that guest
card, if you could please fill that out, we want to have a record
of your visit and at the end of the service, everyone, of
course, that has a candle, um, at the end of the service, after
the candlelight time, we're going to blow out the candles. And
then as you go out the door of the auditorium here on the left-hand
side, you'll see the table where you picked up the candle. There'll
be a brass bin there. You can put your candle right
in there and that would be fine. And then also give that guest
card to the usher that's standing by that table and he will give
you your gift for being here this evening. We have a gift
prepared for all of our first time guests and we're just so
thankful that you are here. For everyone that is involved
in the program this evening, whether it's singing or reading
or instrumentals, whatever that may be, I believe you have an
order of service. I am not going to come to the
pulpit and call you up when it's your turn. You follow the person. ahead of you, so watch your order
of service and just follow them right up as soon as they finish. So at this time, we'll have the
teen group come and then we'll follow after that. Joyful and triumphant, O come
ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold him, born the
King of angels. O come, let us adore him. in Christ the Lord. Jesus, to Thee we'll go again. Matthew 1, verses 18 through
25. Now the birth of Jesus Christ
was on this wise, when as his mother Mary was a spouse to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy
Ghost. Then Joseph, her husband, being
a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was
minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these
things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in
a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take
unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Ghost. and she shall bring forth a son,
and shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people
from their sins. Now all this was done that it
might be fulfilled, which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet,
saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring
forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is God with us. Then Joseph, being raised from
sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took
unto him his wife, and knew her not, till she had brought forth
her firstborn son, and he called his name Jesus. There's a special kind of feeling
and excitement in the air. There is talk about the miracle
of Christmas everywhere. But this miracle so grand isn't
hard to understand. It's not a magic feeling or some
distant wonderland. The miracle of Christmas is that
God became a man. He sent a little baby to unfold
redemption's plan. The miracle of miracles brings
hope to every man. The miracle of Christmas time. See the lights in every window,
hear the children laugh and play, as the season in crescendo seems
to welcome Christmas Day. But the reason for it all is
a little babe so small, who left the throne and heaven for a lonely
cattle stall. The miracle of Christmas is that
God became a man. He sent a little baby to unfold
redemption's plan. The miracle of miracles brings
hope to every man. The miracle of Christmas time. The miracle, the miracle, the
miracle, the miracle of Christmas time. We're going to read Luke chapter
2, 8 through 20. And they were sore afraid. And
the angel said unto them, fear not, for behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy, which shall be all people. For unto
you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ
the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto
you, ye shall find the babe wrapped and swaddling clothes, lying
in the manger. And suddenly there was with the
angel a multitude of heavenly hosts praising God and saying,
glory to the God in the highest. And on earth, peace, goodwill
toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels
were gone away, from there into heaven, the shepherds said one
to another, let us now go even on to Bethlehem and see this
thing which has come to pass, which the Lord hath made unto
us. And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and
the babe lying in the manger. And when they had seen it, they
made known abroad the same which was told concerning this child.
And all that they heard and wondered those things which were told
by them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things
and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned glorifying
and praising God for all the things that they had heard and

In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet.
And now Bethlehem in the land of Judah are not the least among
the princes of Judah, for out of these shall come a governor
that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privilege,
called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time
the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem
and said, go and search diligently for the young child. And when
he hath found him, bring me word again that I may come and worship
him also. When they had heard the king,
they departed. And lo, the star which they saw in the east went

first of all to thank each and every one for coming. And I know
Christmas is a very, very busy time of year. And I do thank
you for taking your time and being here with us, and being
our guest this evening. And throughout the singing tonight
we've heard about different things. We've heard about the manger.
We've heard about the cross. We've heard about the wise men.
We've heard about the shepherds. And we've heard a lot about how
the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has came. And and how he was
born of a virgin and many different things that we've heard this
evening and tonight though I want to take just a few moments and
not talk about how he came but there's a question that everyone
should have the answer to and that is this why he came everyone
should know that The Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did not come
just so that we could have some good story that could be written
down in a book called the Bible. He didn't come just so that people
could just live a better life or just so that people could
feel better about themselves or turn over a new leaf or something
like that. No, He came for a very specific
purpose. And it's my belief that everything
that God does, there is a very specific purpose for what He's
doing. The God of Heaven, He knew where
you would be on December 24th at 6 p.m. this evening. He knew you would be here. He
knew that. It's not by some accident that you're here this evening,
and we know that the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, when He
was born of that virgin, that was not by accident either. Mankind
cannot explain how that happened, but that passage that tells us
about the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ being born of a virgin,
it also tells us, but with God, nothing shall be impossible. I don't know what you're dealing
with tonight, but what I do know is this, that God can help you through
that. I know that God loves you, and I know it because God's Word
says that He loves you. John 3, 16 says, And we need to know, of course,
why Jesus came into this world. Was it simply to be a good teacher?
Was it simply to live a good life that we could pattern our
lives after? I think every one of us could
say that there were people, maybe they've passed on from this life
now, but there's ones in our minds that we would say, you
know what? lived, maybe it was a godly life,
maybe it was just a moral life, whatever it may be, you would
say, I want to live a life that is patterned after what they
had lived there because of good things that they had done. Well,
the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came, but not only so that we
could just pattern our life, but when the Lord was speaking
to His disciples, He He asked them a question, and it was a
very personal question that he asked them. These were men that
had traveled with Him for a long time, and they had heard His
teachings. They had seen His miracles. They
had seen that He had made the lame to walk again. They had
caused the blind to see. He had raised the dead back to
life. They had seen all of these things, and they were talking
about what the world said about Jesus. and how the world was
calling him this and calling him that and had all these different
things to say about the Messiah. And the Lord looked at his disciples,
the ones that were the closest to him, and he asked this question,
but whom say ye that I am? What he was asking them is this,
that everyone else has their opinion of who I am as the Lord
and Savior of Jesus Christ, but who am I to you? Can I ask you
that question tonight? Who is the Lord to you? Is He
simply just someone that you read about in the Bible? And
well, you may even believe that He's the Son of God. You may
know what the Bible says about the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
but is it only a head knowledge? Is He only a Savior here and
not a Savior here? You see, you must trust Christ
as your personal Savior if you desire to have a home in heaven. The Lord said, Whom do ye say
that I am? And Peter answered and said this,
Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. You see, Christ
came to save. He did not come just to help
us to live a better life. Matthew 1.21 says this, And she
shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus,
for he shall save his people from their sins. He came to save. You see, it's easy for us to
talk about the events around Christ's birth, and it's easy
to see the cute manger scene, and the live nativities, and
all of that nostalgia that surrounds this time of year. And I love
those things. I'm not saying that it's wrong
to look at those things. It helps pull the whole picture
together. And the different ones, they
do wonderful jobs showing those types of things. But the reality
is this. He is so much more than just
a baby in a manger. It's so much more than just a
cute little manger scene sitting in someone's yard or a live nativity. It's more than that. He came,
and when we talk about why He came, mankind is brought face
to face with who we are. The Bible says that for all have
sinned and come short of the glory of God. This world does
not like the reality of sin. They don't like the reality that
sin has to have a punishment and that there had to be a payment
for that sin. And if we do not trust Christ
in paying for that payment, it's on us and we have to go to hell
for all eternity. The world doesn't like to hear
that. And can I help you here tonight? It's not a message that
I love to tell someone. You have to go to hell if you
don't trust Christ. That's not a message that is
a feel-good message, but it doesn't stop there. You see, the Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ, He didn't say that for all have sinned
and come short of the glory of God, and there's nothing that
you can do about it, and you're going to die, and you're going
to go to hell, and there's no hope for anyone. No, it's the
Word of God says, for the Son of Man has come to seek and to
save that which is lost. He came so that we don't have
to spend an eternity in hell. He came so that we can go to
heaven by trusting Him as our personal Savior. You see, mankind
is a sinner and as we look across our land we see problems, do
we not? I don't think anyone in this
room from the youngest to the oldest would be able to say with
a straight face, or at least truthfully, well, our land has
no problems. No, it has problems. We could
go on and on about those problems. We have political problems, and
economic problems, and monetary problems, social problems, and
many, many more. But can I help us here tonight? The issue is not those problems. They are the side effects of
the issue. The issue is sin. And it's in your heart, and it's
in my heart. For all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God. The Bible says this, there is
none righteous, no, not one. You see, all of us, we have a
spiritual problem from birth. You say, well, Pastor, well,
that seems to be some bad news. I came here to be encouraged
tonight at candlelight service. Aren't you going to give us some
good news? Well, the reality is this, we
must know that we're lost before we realize what we can be saved
from. The Bible says that we're sinners.
We have to come face to face with our sin. You see there is
a Savior and His name is Jesus. In Luke chapter 19 what you'll
find is you'll find an account in Scripture here about a man
named Zacchaeus. And this man of course the children's
song is, Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little
man was he. He climbed up in the sycamore
tree for the Lord he wanted to see. He sang that song many,
many times. Well, as you read about this
man that wanted to see Jesus, you know Zacchaeus was a sinner
just like you and I. Just because he was there in
what we would consider Bible times, that doesn't mean that
he was a perfect man. No, on the contrary, he was a
sinner just like every one of us. And in Luke 19.10, what we
find is that verse I quoted a moment ago, and in verse 9 it says,
And Jesus said unto him, speaking of Zacchaeus, this sinner, This
day is salvation come to this house. for so much as he also
is the son of Abraham. Notice, for the son of man is
come to seek and to save that which was lost. So if all of
us are sinners, for all have sinned and come short of the
glory of God, if all of us are lost because of the sin that
we've been born with, but we see that the son of man has come
to seek and to save that which was lost, and that word lost
there, you can look at that and insert your name. The Son of
Man came to seek and to save you and to save me. This passage speaking of this
man Zacchaeus was a wealthy man. But he was lost. He knew there
was something different about Jesus and he wanted to see him
as he passed that way. And in verse 5 it says, Notice
this man, he knew there was something different about this Jesus. And as he knew there was something
different, can you see how this man, he wanted to place his eyes
upon Jesus. He wanted to see this one that
the people had been talking about. No doubt there was a chatter
through the town and people talking about this man Jesus, this so-called
Messiah and ones like that. And he said, all I want to do
is just place my eyes upon him. And he was willing to climb a
tree because he was a short man. He was willing to climb a tree
to be able to get a glimpse of this man named Jesus. Can I help
you here tonight? That was a man who was looking
for something. He was a man that he may not
have even known exactly what he needed, but he knew he needed
something. Maybe you're here tonight and
there's a void within you. Maybe there's no peace. There's
no joy. You don't know where you're going
to spend eternity. Maybe you came through these
doors tonight not knowing exactly what you needed, but you've tried
all sorts of different things and you just can't find peace
or joy anywhere. Can I help you here tonight?
You can find it in the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You can. And even better news, you don't
have to climb a tree to do it. Amen? All you have to do. is come to him. So if we are
sinners and we're apart from God and sinners of course hide
from God just as Adam did in the Garden of Eden after he had
sinned, notice God did not give up on him. God placed Adam and
Eve into this perfect world and he gave them one job to do and
that was to care for that garden that was there. And while they
were caring for that, God told them you cannot eat of this one
tree. What did they do? They did the
exact same thing that every one of us would do. They said, if
there's something I cannot do, I'm going to do that, because
that's how our flesh works. And they sinned against God.
They ate from that tree. They listened to the lie of the
devil. Well, after that, of course,
their eyes were opened and they were hiding from God. And I love
that it says that God came in the midst of a garden and he
was looking for them. Aren't you glad for a God who
doesn't give up on you? He cares for you. He loves you. He came looking for them. He
wasn't looking for them physically. God knows everything. He can
see everything. But He was seeking Adam and Eve
spiritually. And if you are not saved tonight,
can I give you some good news tonight? That God is seeking
for you. He knows exactly where you are,
physically speaking. He knows that you're lost. Spiritually
speaking, but He doesn't want you to go to hell. Some people
would say, well how could a God who loves us send us to hell?
Understand, it's your sin that's sending you to hell. This loving
God has given you the opportunity to escape that. As a seven-year-old
boy, I trusted Christ as my personal Savior, and I'm so thankful for
the opportunity that I had to hear the Gospel and to trust
the Lord as my personal Savior. In John chapter 3, In verse 16
through 18, notice the Bible says this, For God so loved the
world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God
sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that
the world through him might be saved. Notice verse 18, He that
believeth on him is not condemned. But he that believeth not is
condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name
of the only begotten Son of God. people will say, well, I think
I can work my way to Heaven. Well, I've been involved in this
religion, or that religion. I think I'm an okay person. I think because I help these
people, or I give this amount of money, or I help with this
charity, I think I'll make it to Heaven. Well, the reality
is this, that the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ He said, I am the
way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father
but but by me. And in that verse that we just
read, it says, But he that believeth not is condemned already, not
because he hasn't done any good works or anything like that,
but simply because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God. You can trust in religion, but
it's not gonna get you to heaven. You can trust in a name on a
church building, It's not going to get you to heaven. You can
carry a Bible under your arm. You can memorize scripture. You
can memorize these songs that we're saying tonight. You can
know everything that the Bible says about going to heaven. But
if you never trust Christ as your personal Savior, understand
when you pass from this life, you'll be in hell for all eternity. None of us, of course, want to
go there. We don't want anyone else to
go there. Something that we've all asked ourselves at one time
or another are questions like this. Why am I here? What is
my purpose? During this time of year, we,
of course, focus on the manger and everything that surrounds
the birth of our Savior. But we need to understand that
this baby that we're hearing about tonight He came to die
for you and for me. There's a great song, it's entitled
Born to Die upon Calvary. That's why Jesus came. He did
not come just to have that cute manger scene. He came because
33 and a half years after He was born there was going to be
a cross placed upon Calvary and He would be nailed to that cross
and there would be nails through his hands and through his feet.
He would have a crown of thorns placed onto his head and his
body would be beaten and his blood would run down that cross
simply because we needed a Savior. Needed a Savior. This was all
perfectly orchestrated in the plan of God because God is in
control. Maybe you're here and you're
not saved tonight. You've never trusted Christ as your Savior.
Can I help you tonight? You need to be saved. The Lord
is seeking for you. And just as God knows everything,
He knew where you would be this evening. Maybe someone listening
on the live stream tonight, the Lord knew exactly what you would
be listening to. He knew what the space that we
would be filling tonight. He knew that we would be a part
of this service. And I don't have to convince
you if the Holy Spirit is speaking to you, I don't have to convince
you of that. You feel it inside of you. You
know you need to be saved. The Holy Spirit convicts us of
our sin and shows us of our need for Him. Would you trust Him
tonight here in the book of Romans chapter 10 and verse 9 and 10. I want to read a passage to you
here. Romans chapter 10 and verse 9 and 10. It says this, that
if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, Notice, As you continue down through
this passage it says, for with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness. It's not just, well, I have a
knowledge of God. No, with the heart man believeth
unto righteousness. And with the mouth confession
is made unto salvation for the scripture saith, whosoever believeth
on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between
the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich unto
all that call upon Him. For whosoever shall call upon
the name of the Lord shall be saved." That's God's desire tonight. It's that you would trust Christ
as your personal savior. It's a promise in his word that
if you come to him he will not cast you out. Will you come to
Christ tonight. He came for you so that you would
come to him. Maybe you're here and there's
another circumstance going on. Maybe you've trusted Christ.
as your Savior, but there are some things in your life that
you need to yield to Him, that you need to give to Him, you
need to have that peace and that comfort that you once had by
trusting in Him. Can I help you here tonight?
All you have to do is ask. You just have to ask Him. He'll
help you. I don't understand everything
that there is to know. of the spiritual, if you will.
I don't know why God would send his son to die for a sinner like
me. I don't know that. But what I
do know is this, for God so loved the world and I am part of that
world. And I trusted Christ as my personal
Savior and you can do the same thing as well. Would you do that tonight? I
want you to bow your heads, if you will, and close your eyes.
Here in just a moment, I want to give you the opportunity to
trust Christ as your Savior. If that's something that you
would like to do tonight, I'd like to give you the opportunity
to respond. There are many people in this
room, many different circumstances, family dynamics, those types
of things, and only you and God know what you're going through.
Only you and God know what your spiritual condition is. But if
you've never trusted Christ, I don't have to convince you
that you're not saved. The Holy Spirit does that. But the reality is, you can be
saved. Here in just a moment, I'm going
to pray a prayer. And this prayer that I'm going
to pray, understand it cannot save you. But your belief in
these words, Your belief in the Son of God, realizing that you're
a sinner, realizing that you cannot work your way to heaven,
it's only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Belief that
the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ died for your sins and He will
save you. Understand, that's the belief
in the heart that we talked about. And it's God's desire that you
would be saved. Your belief in these words, If
you've never trusted Christ as your Savior, I want to invite
you to pray in your heart these words. Dear Heavenly Father,
I know that I'm a sinner. I know that I owe a debt for
my sin that is impossible for me to pay. But I believe that
you died on the cross to pay that sin debt for me. I believe
that you rose again on the third day and that you are alive in
heaven today. I know that you're seeking for
me. I know that in my current state,
I'm on my way to hell, but I want to go to heaven. Lord, I repent
of my sins and I accept you as my personal savior. In Jesus
name I pray. Amen. Keep your heads bowed and your
eyes closed for just a moment here. If you're here tonight
and you say, Pastor Combs, I believed what I just prayed there, and
I just prayed that prayer for the first time, believing in
what God has done for me. I prayed that prayer for the
first time. Would you slip your hand up? You say, I trusted Christ
as my Savior tonight, anyone at all. You say, I trusted Christ. Maybe you'd never trusted Christ
before and you say, I got my eternity settled. Anyone at all.
I won't embarrass you, I promise. I'm not going to call you out,
but I want to pray for you. Anyone at all, you say, I trusted
Christ tonight, here's my hand. Let me ask you this then, believer.
Going through some trials, some difficulties in your life, all
of us go through valleys and mountaintops. We all deal with
struggles and things like that. Would you give that to God tonight?
Would you realize that that baby in a manger, the one that died
on the cross, if you've trusted Him as your personal Savior,
you've trusted in the one who said, and lo, I am with you always,
even unto the end of the world. Amen. Would you trust in His
presence this evening, realizing He'll never leave you nor forsake
you? Trust in Him.
