His Name: Immanuel
This morning I want to look at a text that speaks prophetically about the birth of Christ. It's also from the Old Testament, and it's a familiar text to most of you. Isaiah 7:14. "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." The name "Immanuel," of course, means "God with us." So this prophecy contains a strong hint that the Messiah who was promised to be the redeemer of Israel would be god in the flesh.
In fact, it's amazing as you review the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah, how many of them speak about His deity. There's this verse. Then a couple of chapters later, following up on this same prophecy, we find another familiar prophecy about the birth of Christ. Isaiah writes this in Isaiah 9:6: "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Again, the names of deity are ascribed to him...
