A Covenant of Grace

Certain engagements require more than a casual or implied commitment. In the sale and purchase of a home the seller and buyer enter into various contracts that bind them to certain obligations and rights. Weddings involve legal oversight, the exchange of vows, and the signing of a license. And this is right. As a home buyer, I need to know that the seller actually owns the home he is selling; I need to have spelled out how much property is attached to the home and exactly how much I will have to pay to acquire the property. As a marital partner I need to be assured that my spouse is committed to me, not just reasonably interested in me. By clarifying responsibilities and privileges binding agreements promote confidence in the relationship they are framing.

In God's kindness his gift of salvation is best understood as a covenant, a binding relationship between himself and those he promises to deliver from sin and misery. As sinful and miserable people we need to know that God has given us a redeemer, Jesus. And that Jesus will certainly rescue all those who find their life in him.
