Blind Indifference to Jehovah's Servant

71

We are continuing on this communion Lord's day evening to dwell upon Jehovah's Servant as He is presented to us in this prophecy and especially in this passage.

There are times when Isaiah speaks of Israel as Jehovah's servant. There are other times when we know that He speaks of Christ as Jehovah's servant. We can rest assured that it is Christ that he speaks about in this passage.

We have the confirmation of the New Testament in Acts 8:30-35. When Philip went and joined himself to the chariot of the Ethiopian eunuch he was reading from this same passage. Philip asked him Understandest thou what thou readest? How can I, except some man should guide me? was his reply.

The eunuch asked Philip: I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? It tells us in Acts 8:35: Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

There are at least eight direct references to this passage in the New Testament. All of them within the connection of the sufferings of Jesus Christ and the preaching of the Gospel.
